Bought a tin of ducks back in the shade Autumn Brown. It has left my fence bright orange. Will not be buying again. Beware of the colour advertised as it does NOT mean that it will actually be anywhere near that colour.
Having purchased some cuprinol garden shades, I decided to paint my lawn edging sleepers in cool marble, weather proof with a 6 year guarantee. The day was warm and sunny and the sleepers were tinder dry. This was the 4th May 2023. Today, being 6th May 2023, we had a fine drizzle, to my disappointment I looked at my previous handy work and it appears that the colour is washing away. I had applied the colour in 2 coats on the same day as recommended on the tin. It would appear by my own personal experience and all the other reviews that your product is not fit for purpose . Perhaps Trading standards might be my next port of call.

Bought garden shades to refresh my fence which was painted in the same colour five years ago. So disappointing! So, so watery, runs everywhere, drips so easily. Have only painted a small area so far and am now thinking I will buy a different make as I don't want to use any more of my precious time and end up with an inferior finish. Such an awful waste of money.

Very disappointed new shed painted with three coats and it hasn't lasted one year can already see the wood in some places. So much for 5 years, I now have more work getting it off and redoing. I certainly do not recommend ducks back as a product stay well clear of it.

I have bought five, 5 L containers of Cuprinol ducks back Silver Copse.
I had brand-new fencing wood delivered and I painted the wood on an average day. Not too sunny, not too cloudy and definitely not raining. I waited and applied a second coat. I followed the instructions on the back of the team to the letter.
Several days later
My husband went to put the fencing up and it was raining, the paint just started washing away. Needless to say he stopped putting the fence up because there were puddles of grey water on the floor. i’m now left with Fencing that looks like it’s had a wash of grey paint on it not two coats.
I still have three full containers of the paint left and I will not be using any of it as I am so disappointed that I have wasted time and money painting my fence.
I have contacted the company and I’m waiting for a response and hopefully all my money back.
I’ll pick the 12th of April as the date of my experience, but to be quite honest it’s the middle of April I can’t remember the exact date
I’ve had a reply from Cuprinol , saying that the product should only be applied to rough sawn wood_ seriously, I’ve already stated, I followed the instructions on the tin to the letter_ The wood is rough sawn, timber batons. Did I just get a generic response or did somebody actually read what I had written?

Have spent Friday and Saturday painting our outside fence in suitable dry conditions. Painting over a cream Cuprinol Garden Shade from 2 years ago. Fancied a change and very much liked the look of Silver Copse on the label when looking in our local DIY store.
How I was about to be disappointed ! Today is Sunday and this afternoon we have had light rain, not heavy or unusual weather.
To my dismay as I went outside, I was greeted with my fence literally running with paint washing off, all my hard work and effort simply washing away !
I could have almost accepted this if I'd used a cheap shops own brand, but I felt I had bought the best by using a known brand of fence paint.
I have included photos as I am saddened at not only the waste of time and effort but also cost.
I had applied 3 coats as wanted a good finish not the wash type look you get with one coat. Therefore I had used a whole tin. But now I may well as of applied just one coat as it looks miserably dreadful !
Given that we are living within a cost of living crisis I did not expect to have to now go and buy an extra tin just to try to rectify what actually looks a mess now.
What a shame Cuprinol, I am hoping to get a favourable response in order that my faith in your products be restored. I did not expect this from this brand
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest possible convenience.
Please note I have emailed the dulux email and sent photos

Avoid this paint at all costs. Just re painted my whole decking area which is a large area to cover, did 2 coats like suggested been out this morning to take the rubbish out to find out that the paint is literally washing off with the rain very very disappointing a lot of time, effort and money wasted on this product.

Well the ducks back silver copse I had on the fence was 5 or 6 years old and wore very well. Bought misty heathland to go over the top of it as it looked a similar shade, similar darkness. It was totally different than the swatch on the tin, it was more like cream colour. But mistakes happen and Cuprinol went above and beyond to rectify it, admitted the tin swatch was wrong, fixing problems and making a customer happy is the sign of a good company, thanks

I bought Cuprinol Garden Shades Coastal Mist last summer thinking it would be good quality paint for my garden bench with a "6 year weatherproof for garden wood" claim. How wrong was I. After sanding I had to apply 5 coats as it was so thin & not providing correct coverage. I was initially happy but after the winter it now looks horrendous. The paint has started coming off & looks tired & worn. The thought of having to sand the bench down again & repaint it again is not ideal as it took days last year to ensure paint coats where dry inbetween so many coats. The paint has absolutely ruined my bench, I wish I'd varnished it instead... Not with Cuprinol!

As a full-time handyman, I use lots of paints. Cuprinol garden shades is definately the worst of a bad lot. Thinner than water, terrible coverage, adhesion so bad I had to sand it into the existing paint in to get it stick at all. I've had cheap shop's-own garden paints that were great, so Cuprinol have no excuse.
It would work ok as a wash on new softwood - soak in and give a bit of colour. It really should be labelled as a wash not a paint. You'd probably do as well just watering down cheapo and saving your money.

Used autumn brown ducks back paint on some fencing and a shed, all rough wood and it’s just washing away in the rain!! So frustrating when I spent so much time doing it and I now don’t know what to use to rectify the mess

I prepared my large gate, and the side gate then painted it with the ducks back, this morning it’s all being washed off by the rain what a mess now got to go and try to clear up the mess it’s made I’m not happy at all

A few years ago I painted my fence with garden shades and it was great. I was lazy, didn’t clean the fence, just whacked it on, two coats and it covered like a dream and lasted for years. Just bought some to paint the inside of a brand new shed and was horrified by how watery it was. Three coats later and it’s still looking like watered down white wash. Wish I’d read these reviews before buying it. If it was for anything but the inside of a shed I’d sand it off and buy something better, but as it is I’ll just put a 4th coat on and leave it to its streaky mess. There must have been a change to the ingredients, so if you’ve used it before don’t think it’ll be the same.

Takes ages to stir to get anything like it used to be, new formula just no good!

I purchased several cans of Cuprinol Garden Shades in different colors for several different garden projects. When I started using the first of the paint it seemed to be reasonably viscose and covered well after 2 coats. I had to stop projects and store remaining paint, at least 2 cans of paint were unopened (2.5l cans of each). These were stored under recommended conditions for 5 months, on opening them they were both watery and despite spending a lot of time stirring them they still didn't thicken enough to be suitable for purpose. I am extremely disappointed with this and would appreciate your help in resolving this.

I really wish that I had seen these reviews before I bought two tubs of Forget Me Not to paint my summer house and it's so runny it's un-useable. You can only put a tiny quantity on the brush otherwise it drips everywhere. It's like putting a thin blue wash over the wood. It will take forever to paint a 12' x 11' shed. And how many coats will I need. Awful paint. And yes I have stirred the paint until I'm "blue" in the face. And it keeps separating into two shades of pale blue.
I had always used Ducksback on all our fences, raised beds and boarders and it had that nice waxy feel about it, but in the last year, every 5l can i have bought and used is like water, absolutely useless. I have 2 x 5l cans unused and sealed should they wish to test the contents.

Gutted. I have been using Ducksback on my garden, which is a sea of timber covering fences, steps and decking for several years and always been delighted. This year is a disaster! I bought 2 of their largest containers and they have washed away within 2/3 months of application. My garden looks an unloved mess. The formula must have been played about with because what I have left is useless
I got the Autumn Brown Ducksback in March 21 for the garden fence, it needed repainting in March 22 and I am looking at the fence now in Feb 23 and it needs redoing. It has washed off at the top of every fence panel due to rain from the trees above. This product is a waste of time. How do you claim on their 5 year guarantee? Footnote It is now 29 June 2023 and I am still waiting for a reply from Cuprinol.
