Terrible Afternoon Tea
I bought the afternoon tea as a gift for a family member. Unfortunately they had a poor experience, stale bread, a long wait for the food to come and rude staff.
They were totally underwhelmed after they had been looking forward to the event for a while. It was a total waste of money.
Don’t waste your time or money going here it really isn’t worth it
Bazaar Spa - rather dreadful
Where do I start…brace yourself for a long read! My review relates to the Bazaar Spa as a day guest. I booked the half day morning revival which included use of spa facilities, 50min treatment and lunch in Bazaar. This was a birthday gift from my brother and I was very much looking forward to it. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing start. Having arrived at 9am I didn’t expect to see the changing rooms in such a poor state. The bin was overflowing, plastic wine glasses left on shelf and floor. Lockers not working, some without doors, the hanging rails inside the lockers were either missing or broken, not a single hanger for clothes. The toilet had empty toilet roll cartons on the floor. A spa assistant entered the area to help someone to unlock their locker and I pointed out the glasses on the floor, which she removed but nothing else. I had a coffee in the Bazaar cafe, which just didn’t seem ready for service despite it being just after 9am. The tea/coffee making area had ran out of sugar and teaspoons and tables unclean. The spa facilities we’re OK, but sadly poor maintenance and housekeeping lets it down. And its just not terribly welcoming. I remember there being day beds here a few years ago, but now sadly uncomfortable plastic sunbeds. I returned to the changing room at 11.30, to find it in the same state. I would have thought by then that the condition would have been checked, considering it had already been pointed out and there were 3 staff on Reception. The shower gel dispensers were empty and I hadn’t brought my own, thinking this would be provided. The handryer didn’t work, the lock on one of the toilet cubicles was missing. The treatment by Sophie was excellent and the lunch (chargrilled chicken wrap) rather nice, as is the stylish decor and furnishings in Bazaar. But it needs more resource. Just one person trying to do everything, take orders, make drinks, waiting on and that reflected in tables being left uncleared with plates and unwiped for next customers and people requesting menus, cutlery, rather than being tended to. Its such a shame for this place. It has the makings to be a fabulous spa with the beautiful surroundings, impressive infinity pool and stylish concept, but poor maintenance and housekeeping sadly lets it down and this is reflected in my poor rating.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER
My daughter and I booked a spa day before Christmas which included lunch, it was just a pity we didn’t look at the reviews beforehand.
All areas in the spa building are in desperate need of a refurb, but this is not the main reason for the 1 star. During my treatment of a back massage, I was aware at one point the therapist wasn’t really concentrating and was only using one hand and I was sure she was on a mobile phone but facing down I couldn’t be sure. The therapist then moved onto my arm and then she was just holding my hand with one of hers but in a limp like fashion, so again I thought Im sure she is using a phone so I raised my head from the cutout hole of the bed and sure enough she was – she immediately pushed it under a towel at the back of her which seemed to be there for the purpose of concealing the phone and claimed she was checking the time – if that had been the case surely it would have been a split second and I would have been none the wiser. The facial part of the treatment was awful and she used the facial scrub over my eyes and proceeded to use a rough flannel with her finger poked in it to get the grains out of the corners of my eyes. Yes you may ask why was I still taking part in the treatment, but Im sure you can appreciate you are in a vulnerable position being semi naked and knowing my daughter was also having a treatment in a separate room, I thought I just need to suck it up. The waiting area for spa treatments and relaxation room is not inviting at all and both areas were absolutely freezing, hence we didn’t even go and relax, we got our things from the changing room and got out of the place.
I emailed Shrigley regarding my disappointment and received an acknowledgement within 4 mins of sending, stating the matters raised would be investigated and I would receive a response as soon as. Well 8 weeks on after my first email and 4 subsequent chaser emails they’ve still never responded and my final email last week stated I would be doing a ‘chargeback’ within 14 days for the full amount of both myself and daughter, whereas initially I was only looking for a partial refund of monies paid for my element of the package.
The Spa Manager’s online bio states and I quote “A positive & polish Spa mgr., recognised as a successful leader who trains & develops productive teams to provide the ultimate level of customer service to ensure every client enjoys a pleasurable experience. Highly organised with a natural aptitude for continuous improvement” I think she needs to rethink her career as this was not a reflection of the service received during the visit or dealing with all my emails.
They have now issued a full refund to my daughter, but again they still haven’t had the decency to email me in way of an apology, especially my question around what is their policy on employees having personal mobiles in the treatment areas and it was only when my daughter was checking her bank account over the weekend she noticed the deposit. No wonder there are no positive reviews about this Hotel and Spa. Stay clear of the place.
Not a good experience
Our room wasnt good ir was at the furthest point away at the end of a corridor and looking out onto the bins. The bin men arrived early to empty them and woke us up as so noisy.
There was a big damp patch on the wall above the door.
My husbands evening meal was inedible.
The liver was too tough to even cut it so he complained and ordered a steak instead which came with no sauce and no garnish or vegetables just chips.By the time his replacement meal arrived I had almost finished my meal.
We had come for a night to celebrate his birthday and had previously about 10 years ago had good experiences here, just wish we hadn't bothered and we were thankful we had only booked one night here.
I have sent 3 emails over last 10 days to complain but haven't even had an acknowledgement how bad is that!
But says it all really as the management clearly just don't care about their customers experiences in this hotel.I only wish I had read these reviews before I booked it.
Not four star or a luxury experience
Booked a one night stay using a ‘Buy a Gift, luxury hotel experience’ gift voucher.
I would not consider Shrigley Hall to be a ‘luxury’ and wish I’d read the reviews before booking.
The reception area and staircase are possibly the nicest part of the hotel. The rest looks like it needs a very deep clean. Our room was basic and in much need of an upgrade. The heating system wasn’t working (although an oil heater had been provided) The paint/paper was peeling in areas. Found toenail clippings on the floor and hair in the bath.
Bar/restaurant areas on first sight looked nice but carpets and seats were dirty and stained.
Luckily the food was nice but overpriced for what you get. Breakfast was ok.
Glad we only had one night, would not recommend and would not stay again.
Terrible experience
Unfortunately we didn't have a good experience at this hotel. We booked 2 rooms at the beginning of December and paid what we would consider a lot of money for them. The cleanliness of the rooms was terrible. It won't allow me to add photos unfortunately, but it honestly looked like the bathrooms hadn't been cleaned after the last guests left.
The door of the room I was in wouldn't lock, and so I had to pile furniture up against the door to feel like me and my daughter were even slightly safe.
I contacted reception and spoke to a gentleman who did apologise and he offered a 10% refund per room. There was no offer to move us rooms or to have them cleaned. I had to try and clean the bathrooms with baby wipes and hand soap before we used them as that's all I had available to me.
The receptionist said to go and see him in the morning and he would arrange the refund. I did, and he assured me we would receive it but it could take a little while due to the process.
Over a month later now and I have no refund. I've emailed several times with no response. I'm really disappointed. Wouldn't recommend you staying here.
This space has so much potential
This space has so much potential, but it smells like mold and chemicals. The shower drains are blocked and the outside pool has so much chlorine inside.
I’m not sure how it’s achieved a four…
I’m not sure how it’s achieved a four star rating it’s at most a two if you compare to four star hotels in Manchester.
The staff are really nice but it’s very tired and in much need of a deep clean and refurbish
The bar is very expensive and the rooms are overpriced.
Great location but not a lot nearby.
Great views and golf.
I got as a present but have stayed for weddings and was charged £400 for one night in an average room/flat.
I recently stayed here with my partner…
I recently stayed here with my partner for the night and had a spa package and treatment for my birthday.
I must state the location is amazing but the service from staff is not good.
Before checking in we went to the spa where we were greeted with robes and towels etc. they then explained our treatments that were booked had to be moved as 2 people were off Ill who were doing it. Their options weren’t suitable for us and we had to decide to do 25 mins each for my partner and I. We were told we would be sent an email about refund or vouchers for the other half we didn’t use but yet to receive.
Spa facilities were nice when we went to the pool.
When we arrived to the hotel we had to wait to check in. The gentleman who was dealing with this had no energy or enthusiasm. Very dry. He said here is your key, this way to restaurant and this way to bar and pointed. We were then left to find our room.
We decided to go back to the spa for our treatments on the Same day but only for 25mins as explained above. They said we can’t give you a robe for your treatment. We complained and they shrugged us off. So we went into the treatment room wearing our big winter jackets and jeans etc while everyone else was relaxed in their robes. Very embarrassing as we were the only ones not wearing robes.
The treatment itself was amazing and Recomend Julia, very relaxing.
Then when we went to sleep we had a group of people playing loud music next door at 1am. The phone in the room had no numbers to call so I had to get dressed to find someone. This was resolved but very frustrating.
I would say the service was very poor and could definitely be improved for the price.
However the room was nice and treatment itself was good and the pool was great too. If they were to improve their service I would come back.
⭐ 1 star
⭐ 1 star – Standards and customer service have declined significantly.
I have stayed at Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa several times in the past and have always enjoyed my visits, which makes this experience even more disappointing.
This stay was booked to celebrate two special occasions – my mother’s 80th birthday and my daughter’s 28th. Unfortunately, it fell well below acceptable standards. The room was tired and in clear need of maintenance, with dated décor and worn carpets. The birthday package (£45) was extremely poor value and unacceptable – a bottle of prosecco, two glasses ( 3 of us) and a box of chocolates that were out of date and had to be thrown away.
The spa experience was also below standard: a long wait to be booked in with no apology, untidy changing rooms, and a jacuzzi that was completely out of order, with the control button removed.
I have given the hotel three opportunities to deal with my complaint. Aside from an initial response, all further communication has been completely ignored, which is unacceptable and demonstrates very poor customer service.
I will certainly not be returning, which is a real shame as I have always enjoyed my visits in the past. However, standards have clearly changed dramatically and customer service is now extremely poor. Until standards and customer service are properly addressed, I would strongly advise others to avoid booking this hotel, particularly for celebrations or special occasions.
Booked a spa day for 2 with an upgrade…
Booked a spa day for 2 with an upgrade for 30th December, I had to move this due to illness in our family to the 2nd January. I was charged an additional £20 for a lesser package. Its very poor customer service and shows extreme inflexibility. Would not recommend
It’s such a shame as the hotel
It’s such a shame as the hotel , spa was in a beautiful location , stunning views etc . Spa , treatment was lovely , spa was dirty , in disrepair ! Mould , broken tiles etc etc . Went to the spa reception to see one member of staff vaping on her phone lying on the towels and robes in the store room . Hotel room was dirty , stained , two beds pushed together to make a king with a gap down the middle . Restaurant, staff lovely but ended up with no drinks for our meal as they forgot three times . Full meal and no drinks 🤦♀️ this place is a disaster ! Writing this from the bar .
Underwhelming spa day
A freezing, disappointing, expensive spa day. The whole facility was too cold to relax and enjoy the day. Sandwiches for lunch were nice but took an age to be served. All in all an overpriced under whelming experience.
Don’t go
Lovely hotel and restaurant staff.
Food was nice.
Hotel is dirty. Spa is dirty, Spa was also broken pool and jacuzzi. Complaints also go unanswered by there management. Also caught an eye infection I’m assuming the pillow.
AVOID AVOID AVOID, THIEFS AND RUDE STAFF
i’m not really 1 for leaving reviews, but this place is a NO go!
After sending my wife and her friend on a day trip to shrigley hall to find out that there staff had stolen there jewelry whilst having a massage, after confronting them about this issue was advised that this was agency staff and to be fobbed off.
this is not a professional way to deal with this issue and staff was rude and not helpful or apologetic in anyway shape or form.
overall experience horrible and would not recommend.
AVOID this place and save yourself the thief’s that they HIRE and disappointment from rude staff who are not willing to help out over serious matters
Hidden charges, unsafe room and appalling customer service
Hidden charges, unsafe room, and appalling customer service
I booked a stay at Shingley Hall through Hotels.com for a special occasion, only to find on arrival that the hotel demanded an extra £120 spa fee (£60 each for a few hours then another £50 if we wanted to use it again in the morning!) which had never been disclosed at the time of booking. When I challenged this, the manager admitted that these charges are only shown after booking — which is misleading and, in my understanding, illegal.
The room itself was uninhabitable, with damp walls. I have allergies and hidden disabilities (autism/ADHD), and this made the room unsafe for me. When I raised these concerns, the manager was rude, dismissive, and unhelpful — even shrugging his shoulders at me. He showed no care for making our stay pleasant and was actively unpleasant in his manner.
The situation left me and my friend in tears. We had travelled a long way, wasted hours of our holiday, and I was forced to drive home in the dark — something I actively avoid due to my disabilities. We ended up with no stay at all, no celebration for my friend’s birthday, and only a refund after an hour-long battle with Hotels.com chat support. We both just went home upset.
Since then, I’ve seen numerous other negative reviews describing similar or worse experiences at this property. It is shocking and deeply worrying that Hotels.com continues to list Shingley Hall despite this consistent pattern of serious complaints.
I strongly urge Hotels.com to stop offering this hotel on their platform, and I urge other travellers to avoid it at all costs. This was one of the most distressing experiences I’ve ever had booking accommodation.
Room 371 Dirty with spiders inside and…
Room 371 Dirty with spiders inside and webs and noisy room 371 3rd floor 2 meter from the hotel boiler room sleepless night very bad customer service won’t change room
Awful customer service!
Stayed for 2 nights in adjoining suites at a cost of over £850. The rooms were shabby, badly stained, with mismatched furniture and none of the amenities advertised (no bottled water, no dressing gowns). Shower pressure was awful. These were supposed to be the best rooms in the hotel – absolutely not worth the price.
Other members of our wedding party had to move rooms due to disrepair, which was embarrassing enough. But as we were in the “suites” (supposedly the best rooms), there was nowhere better to move to.
I’d told the booking team it was for a wedding and even double-checked the rooms had been refurbished after reading bad reviews. I was reassured they had been – clearly not true.
When I complained at the time, the receptionist couldn’t have cared less. I asked for it to be escalated to management but nothing happened. Followed up with emails afterwards and still no response. While the reservations team later tried to help by giving me management’s email address, management themselves simply don’t reply. It feels like once they have your money, they don’t care.
A complete lack of care from the hotel – embarrassing experience and terrible value for money.
Had beautiful treatments
Had beautiful treatments, in all my
10-15 years of having massages Joanne was by far the best I had ever had. I felt so incredibly relaxed afterwards and my body felt amazing! I was a bit disappointed there was no way of providing a tip via card, the experience Joanne provided me was nothing but amazing! Don’t ever let her go, she is an asset to the spa.
Room was in serious need of repair with lots of holes, marks and staines on walls and worse for wear bath tub.
Other than that my experience was amazing and I’m sure shrigley hall will get round to refurbs in no time. I’ll be back again, amazing!
We arrived the room was dirty which we…
We arrived the room was dirty which we reported to reception, they offered to move us. We wanted a refund and to leave but was advised they couldn’t authorise this! I wish we had just left now. Had to leave early Sunday morning as I woke up with the most horrendous stomach cramps which then led to 2 days of a stomach bug caused by food posioning! I presume either from the food or un hygienic conditions! The whole point coming to stay was to book into the outdoor spa/ swimming area to enjoy for my husbands birthday. We did report my stomach upset to reception. Didn’t see the point as nothing would have been done sbout it anyway! I’ve lost 2 days off work and been doubled over in the worst pain! To make maters worse I was chatting to my niece who I didn’t realise had stayed recently with yourselves and experience similar things with her from being dirty at tye hotel! Had I realised I wouldn’t have booked! Totally spoilt and ruined weekend!
