Disappointing Experience and Lack of Customer Service
I was really looking forward to my spa day at Shrigley Hall with a friend, but unfortunately it was a disappointing experience from start to finish.
The biggest issue was my treatment. I had booked a 30-minute treatment, however the hands-on treatment didn't begin until around 10 minutes after my appointment time and lasted approximately 10 minutes. I was back at reception within 25 minutes of my scheduled appointment. I raised this immediately and was assured by the Spa Manager that 50% of my £105 spa day would be refunded. However, I only received a refund of £22.50.
Unfortunately, there were other issues during the day too. The outdoor pool was far too hot to enjoy, the indoor jacuzzi wasn't filled to an adequate level, causing water to splash everywhere, and several spa facilities were out of order.
What has disappointed me most, however, is the lack of customer service afterwards. I emailed the spa on 9 June to raise my concerns and, despite waiting patiently, I have still not received any response or acknowledgement.
It's a shame, because issues can happen, but good customer service is about how they're resolved. Sadly, on this occasion, I don't feel my concerns have been taken seriously.
Stayed here on a weekend break
Stayed here on a weekend break, loved everything, the spa is great and sunset in the hot tub is beautiful, room was comfy and meal times were good, we will definitely be back.
Avoid Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa if…
Avoid Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa if you’re expecting the luxury experience they advertise.
My 50th birthday spa day was spent listening to constant drilling, hammering, sawing and nail guns from building work taking place immediately beside the spa. Any chance of peace and relaxation was completely lost.
To make matters worse, the outdoor pool was closed. I wasn’t told until after 11am on the day of my 1pm booking—long after I’d travelled to stay with my mum the day before, making it impossible to rearrange.
What’s even more disappointing is what happened afterwards. I submitted a formal complaint on 16 May, chased it on 19 May, escalated it to Head Office on 27 May, and have since sent a Letter Before Action. Despite repeated attempts, I have received no acknowledgement or response.
The issue isn’t just the disruption—it’s the complete lack of customer care. If you’re happy to take customers’ money, you should also be prepared to respond when the experience falls well below what’s advertised.
I’ve now been left with no option but to pursue the matter through the appropriate legal and consumer channels. I hope this post achieves what weeks of polite emails could not: a response.
If you have a serious mobility issue…
If you have a serious mobility issue then this place is definitely not for you, stairs everywhere with no ramps. Unable to go in front of house and directed to a side entrance. No working lift down into breakfast area. But I refuse to mark it down due to the fabulous staff, so friendly helpful and accommodating. A special thanks to Eamonn master of ceremonies for helping get me to the venue after the golf buggy died. The one member of staff who let the team down was the assistant manager, he came as the lady driving the buggy had to call for assistance. He did not even acknowledge us, nearly ran us over, too busy being rude to the member of staff who was nothing but kindness to us. So again I won’t be marking the front of house staff down.
STAY AWAY
The place is run down, disgusting and needs closing down, STAY AWAY
Avoid Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa – A Complete Disaster From Start to Finish
I rarely leave negative reviews, but our stay at Shrigley Hall Hotel was so poor that I feel compelled to warn others.
What was supposed to be a relaxing break for my wife and me turned into one of the worst hotel experiences we've ever had.
The problems started before we even got into the room, with delays at check-in. Once we finally gained access, we were met with serious cleanliness and hygiene issues. To make matters worse, there were insects in the room, including inside a drinking glass. Finding bugs where guests are expected to eat and drink is simply unacceptable.
The evening was then ruined by excessive noise from a wedding reception, which continued late into the night. Any chance of rest was further disrupted by a faulty door alarm that repeatedly went off, causing ongoing disturbance.
However, the most shocking aspect of the stay was the behaviour of a member of staff when we raised our concerns. Instead of receiving professional customer service, we were subjected to completely unacceptablebehaviour fell far below expected standards.
After submitting a formal complaint, the response we received was little more than a generic apology. The hotel admitted many of the issues, claimed internal action had been taken, and detailed remedial measures, yet made no meaningful effort whatsoever to compensate us for what was an objectively dreadful experience.
It's difficult to understand how a hotel can acknowledge poor cleanliness, insects in guest accommodation, excessive noise, equipment faults, delayed room readiness, and inappropriate staff conduct, yet apparently believe that a standard apology is sufficient.
This was not a minor inconvenience. It was a catalogue of failures that completely ruined our stay.
Based on our experience, I would not recommend Shrigley Hall Hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing break. There are far better hotels that actually deliver the standards they advertise and take responsibility when they fail their guests.
1 star.

Wonderful Wedding Stay at Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa stayed at Shrigley Hall…
I recently stayed at Shrigley Hall Hotel and Spa to attend a wedding and it was the perfect venue for such a special occasion.
The grounds and location of the hotel are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Set in stunning surroundings, the hotel offers gorgeous views and a real sense of peace and elegance. The building itself is impressive, and the gardens are a joy to wander around.
The staff were fantastic — every single person i encountered was helpful, friendly, and genuinely attentive. Nothing was too much trouble, and their professionalism made my stay feel effortless and relaxing.
A particular highlight for me was the peacocks! I had such a thoroughly enjoyable time watching them strut around the grounds and listening to their distinctive calls — it added such a charming and memorable touch to the experience.
Overall, Shrigley Hall provided a beautiful, welcoming setting for the wedding, and I would highly recommend it for both special occasions and relaxing getaways. I was left feeling thoroughly spoilt and refreshed. Thank you!
Kind regards

Absolutely lovely Anniversary weekend…
Absolutely lovely Anniversary weekend for me and my husband. Spa was amazing. Hotel lovely with lots of history. Staff very friendly and helpful. Grounds beautiful, we loved the peacocks! Infinity pool just amazing and relaxing. Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice and brilliant for me being Gluten Free.
The only issue we had was that the Golfers took over at breakfast. They were there for at least 2 hours chatting after they had eaten. They blocked walkways and took up tables so that other guests couldn’t sit down. I think the hotel needs to address this. Overall a fantastic stay.
SHOCKING SERVICE WORST HOTEL STAY AWAY
Worst hotel we have ever stayed in customer service is shocking been waiting for managers call for days and no response
We booked in for 3 nights Room wasn’t cleaned for 2 days we left on the 3rd night but put a complaint in with the manager and we didn’t pay for the last night and but a year later they are now asking for the payment of £125
we found hair in the bathroom it was disgusting
STAY AWAY you will be disappointed for sure
Went to the spa but it was far too…
Went to the spa but it was far too busy, the decor looked slightly tired, the pool was packed, generally really fun and great price, but renovations are needed.
I have been trying to find the words to…
I have been trying to find the words to describe our experience, with out being horrible, but unfortunately i can not. The room had black mold in the shower, dust all over the room, on the night we arrived we had dinner in the restaurant my husband is coeliac and can get very poorly if food isn't cooked properly or utensils are not clean, is food was cold and his crockery was filthy, my fries had old fries with them, Same on the second night (we wanted to give them a second chance) we complained both nights about everything and was promised it would be sorted. It was that bad i actually cried in the restaurant.
When we left we even called to try and sort something and i was insulted by a manager called Emma who was horrendously rude, and informed me that 'they are not the travel lodge all the rooms are different' and then told me she had to go as she had paying customers in front of her.
It took 3 week for the manager to reply to the 12 emails, then to be told by the manager there isn't anything we could do as we still stayed, i explained that he maybe able to waste £360 on a room but i can not and he told me not to call the hotel again.
PLEASE IF YOU ARE THINKING OF STAYING HERE DONT
This is a very dirty hotel
This is a very dirty hotel. The hotel manager is not the best. The overall experience was very poor. The spa area very dirty! Work men walking around in dirty workboots no blue over shoes. Dirt everywhere. We had to refuse our beauty treatments was offered a refund but only then 10 days later was offered half a refund which i still do not have!
Please Please do not book this hotel
Please Please do not book this hotel ! It is filthy and run down and in desperate need of repair!! Ignore the 5 star comments (they can not be genuine)if you complain you won't get a response. I just don't want your break away to be as bad as ours was.
Having worked in the Hotel & Leisure…
Having worked in the Hotel & Leisure industry I'm a harsh critic so am surprised to see such a low rating for Shrigley Hall though having frequented the establishment over 20 years my expectations/experiences have varied but it has always been 'good' and having recently taken my Mother for Mother's day I cannot sing their praises enough - it was splendid. All the staff were delightful, the surroundings were spectacular and the food was 10/10 - compliments to the Chef and kitchen team - the arancini was melt in the mouth delicious as was the ample portion of roast beef and all the trimmings - absolutely excellent and I'm comparing that to Clivenden House and Mottram Hall where within the last year I found staff to be half asleep/surly and the so called cuisine mediocre whereas at Shrigley Hall that was certainly not the case and despite the heavy rain the day was made extra special by the majestic peacocks wandering about - just magical. I can only say that in my opinion it is currently being well run and certainly worth a visit and as the 'negative' reviews seem to involve the spa facilities and hotel accommodation I can only say that I truly hope investment is made because it really is a unique place.
Don’t bother coming here
Don’t bother coming here. The roome are dark and small once you find it in a maze of corridors and steps. Our room has flaking paint on the walls, stained carpets and black mold on the window surrounds and on the bathroom tiles. Worst of all you can hear your neighbours, joined and opposite extremely clearly. Not a place to stay.
Went for spa day with 2 friends
Went for spa day with 2 friends. Was relaxing beautiful grounds amazing treatments with Tia- best massage abd facial ever ! Was absolutely fab. Pools jacuzzi sauna abd steam room were great too and lovely food. Will definitely be going again. Thank you 😊
Go elsewhere
Had an afternoon tea at Shrigley Hall with friends as part of my wife's birthday celebration.
Unswept floor, appalling service, very average sandwiches, leftover cake/biscuits from Valentine's Day. Crockery that looked like it was from a transport cafe. Food and drinks put on the table...then nothing. I had to ask for the table to be cleared, then ask again for another round of drinks. Actually spoiled my wife's day.
Shrigley Hall used to be a nice place to visit. Not any more. Won't be back. Spa reviews aren't any better. Best avoided.
A great hotel and spa break. Would highly recommend a visit
What an absolute top-notch visit. We booked and got a great deal. Two rounds of golf, one night and breakfast includes a plus £25 to spend in a restaurant after the hotel. The food was excellent. The breakfast is amazing in which it’s a buffet English and you choose whatever you want. The food in the restaurant was great and I do have quite picky standards. So for me this is an absolute top-notch review. The golf course is magnificent but very hilly. This was the only disappointing part of our trip that we could not get a buggy because of the weather. This is not a fault of the hotel spa on Gulf complex, it is just because of the weather that has been inclement and we fully intend to return in the better weather and play the course. Unfortunately, I am unable to walk any distance show playing golf without a buggy is impossible. The Gulf professional was brilliant, he sorted out was a free spa pass rather than the golf. The hotel is an old Victorian school which is nice inside considering it’s age and Price. The rooms are very comfortable and have nice bathrooms. I would fully recommend a stay here. Drink prices as a reasonable for hotel rates and the staff or magnificently helpful from the young girl behind the bar to the reception staff to the service staff I can’t fault anything about this trip and would recommend anybody takes a trip there.
Terrible Afternoon Tea
I bought the afternoon tea as a gift for a family member. Unfortunately they had a poor experience, stale bread, a long wait for the food to come and rude staff.
They were totally underwhelmed after they had been looking forward to the event for a while. It was a total waste of money.
Don’t waste your time or money going here it really isn’t worth it
