We needed a handle for our garden sickle which was not produced after 1939. We were recommended to contact Woodsmith who asked for dimensions of the tang and recommended a handle in stock which we could modify to fit. The order arrived on time, which we fitted. The pre-war sickle is now good for another 80+ years.

Great piece of kit (a sickle) received swiftly from Woodsmith. They also provided excellent customer service - I contacted Woodsmith for some advice on sharpening the sickle and they were extremely helpful.

I was looking for a new handle for some poultry shears which I purchased years ago but never used as one of the handles broke. I discovered Wordsmith on the internet and was impressed at the range of tool handles on offer. I ordered a file handle as it seemed to be the nearest to the one I need to replace. It was made of ash and roughly the same size as the missing one. It was not expensive and it arrived within 2/3 days. I had to refashion the hole/slot into which the metal blade fits and file away a little amount of the metal cap that surrounds it. I learnt how solid and strong the ash handle is. I had to file down the part of the blade that fits into the handle and just pushed it in. As it stands the blade is very firmly in the new handle and the shears now function as they should, but if it works loose I can always use a suitable adhesive to strengthen the union. In short I am very pleased indeed with my Woodsmith purchase.

When you take a gamble on a small family run operation, it is a great moment when your faith is rewarded.
Here was an example where I was struggling to find the exact item I wanted, so I made my search parameters as precise as possible and got a handful of results, with Woodsmith being the one that stood out. They even had a photo of the caulked handle I was looking for to replace the rotten one on my antique Bill Hook.
I placed my order online, then got updates on delivery, great communication is the key to good online business, so that was reassuring.
When my handle arrived I was delighted with the quality. Beautifully crafted in hardwood and now fitted and oiled and ready for another 150 years of service. Well perhaps it will need replacing before that. I can only hope that such a place as Woodsmith will be there to provide for those handcrafted, niche requirements that keep these tools and all the related crafts, including carpentry, and our history alive.
