unable to contact you except through a portal, the older generation like to be able to email or talk to you.
Informed that my insurance was automatically renewed for the next year, bombarded with renewal emails and texts.

Ripping off current customers
I had to buy a new car. I only had 1 month and 11 days left on my car insurance, but getting a new insurance quote to start in only a few days would have meant having to pay a higher premium than if I got a new policy much further in advance, so I decided to just change my car on my current policy with RAC for the 6 weeks or so I had left.
As it's a newer car I was expecting to pay a fee to match a higher premium, however I have been charged £54.94 for just over one month's cover with a £15 admin fee on top. Even leaving aside the admin fee, that is the equivalent of being charged over 4 times what my insurance cost for my old car last year! Yes it's a newer car, but that is hugely excessive and typical of insurance companies profiteering from their current customers.
Needless to say, I won't be renewing with RAC when my car insurance comes up for renewal, and if that's what they're charging me for a month then the new quote will undoubtedly be astronomical compared to last year.

I completely understand why seeing a charge of £54.94 alongside a £15 admin fee for just six weeks of cover feels excessive, especially when comparing it to what you paid for your old car. It's entirely reasonable to feel frustrated about that, as well as the position it put you in when choosing when to start a new policy. We always want our pricing and charges to feel clear and fair, so I'm sorry for the stress and negative experience this has caused you.

I expected better from a company of this size
Yes — seeing the whole review, I would rewrite it so the sequence is much clearer and the strongest point comes at the end. I’d keep the one-star rating, but avoid “CON” because it can distract from what is actually a very serious complaint.

Appalling customer service from start to finish
Following my car being written off, I discovered that RAC had automatically renewed my insurance. I cancelled the Direct Debit and subsequently received a letter warning me that I would be charged a £45 administration fee for non-payment.
I called RAC to get this sorted out. On my first call, the adviser said there was an echo on the line and promised to call me straight back. He didn’t.
I called again, explained the situation to a second adviser and, during the conversation, the call was ended. So I had to call RAC for a third time.
On the third call, I was finally told that they could sort out the insurance issue. However, I was told this could be done if I agreed that my complaint could be closed as resolved.
I refused. I explained that I wanted the insurance issue sorted out, but I also wanted my complaint about the service I had received from the previous two advisers to be properly investigated.
I was then told that if I wanted to continue with my complaint, they could not sort out the issue and cancel the insurance.
That is the part I find particularly unacceptable. Why should resolving an insurance issue be conditional upon a customer agreeing to close a legitimate complaint about poor service?
I had already experienced a promised callback that never happened and a second call being terminated. I was then effectively being asked to choose between having my insurance issue resolved or continuing with my complaint.
I would expect far better from a company of RAC’s size and reputation.
RAC should listen to the recordings of all three calls and explain why I was put in this position. This is one of the worst customer service experiences I have had. One star is generous.
