Chester branch. Hired a Ford transit as my first choice. Quick service, good price, pleasant communicative staff. Van clean inside and ran like a dream. Amber and Dylan were efficient and friendly and didn’t keep me waiting for collection or drop off. Can’t fault the service. We’ll be back. Well done!!

Hired a 17 seater minibus from the Chester Office to travel to Normandy to do the WWII beaches, museums, memorials and cemeteries for one week, 16th - 23rd May 2026.
Minibus was excellent, only a year old, with sat nav and cruise control. Vehicle was absolutely perfect for the 10 of us with luggage etc..
A big special thanks to Amber, Grace and Chris in the office for there excellent service throughout. All a credit to the company.

One star is too generous. The staff have a terrible attitude. The information they wanted for a basic hire was plain silly, much more than I’ve ever experienced. National insurance number, passport, limited company details at companies house, a family or friends number and address which is data that is private.
When I politely but firmly told them it was a bit pathetic and sales prevention, they threatened to not rent me the van. I let them feel like they had won until I returned that day. One of the supervisors had the smarmiest grin on her face. I pulled her up and made it clear that I had not been rude, loud or swore. If my mood and demeanour offended her then that is her problem only, not mine. I would never ever recommend anyone does business with these people. They look and talk to people like dirt.

Fantastic service - highly recommended....We use the Preston branch every week and they are fantastic, not only can you rely on them every time, even at short notice, but when there is an issue they get it sorted. Chris is a credit to the business and are always our first choice. Thanks guys.

Couty van Preston has long standing relationship with a local business. on a previous journey down South they provided me with a van that had unexpected battery failure after I completed the job.
They sent their regular mechanic around to charge the battery(he didn't notice me on arrival at the breakdown location and started to knock on doors, to the annoyance of local residents)and next week they provided the same van for a drive to Portsmouth which failed again, due to so much more than simple battery failure. The van sat for several hours in a restricted area, while I enjoyed coffee, then I had to transfer my stuff to another van without a backing so metal poles could fly forward and cause a serious accident, if I braked suddenly.
Shocking amount of ignorance, will not gain them new customers, as I have taken matters further.
The business failed their sales quota as a result, due to extreme lateness,and they lost money due to extra van rental charges due to the businesses fault in not paying for hotel accomodation and rsulting in a long drive back North.
Obviously they are not trained mechanics and take your money, without proper training on basic issues such as complete checks and ensuring passenger safety.
Horrid company that charges you for your own mileage,that you pay out of your own pocket, with your company corporate credit card, out of necessity,not for the sake of it.
Report these failed mechanics and fraudelent occupiers of space immediately.

If I could give a minus 5* i would. I rented out a van through my business, it was in a such bad state of repair it looked like it’s just been in an accident. The AdBlue was empty, I had to pay over £50 to fill up, when I queried this they said it wasn’t their responsibility. When I returned it there were 2 minor scratches on the door which I’m 100% sure were on before I took it out. They retained my £500 deposit along with £107 refund as I returned it early, they got 2 quotes of £700 & almost £1000. They told me to rehire it and do the work myself at a cheaper rate, I did this today for a third of the price, I returned the van now they’re asking why I did this as they didn’t give me permission, they’ve now retained another £500 deposit until it gets inspected by the fleet manager. They now owe me £1107 of my money to which they’re still refusing to refund. I will have to seek legal action.

Please please please be very wary of using this tin pot vehicle rental company, if you do make sure that you look at every scratch & mark. They come across as genuinely nice people, I couldn’t be more wrong.

Update....
The date is now 27th December, I returned the van on 1st September and they've still not refunded my 2 deposits stating that the paintwork undertaken for the tiny scratches has still not set even though the vehicle is still being rented out to others and 2 people now including myself and a member of their staff has inspected and it is dry and perfect, but still no refunds.

I rang up , told them I needed a van to collect a table tennis table. Booked a van, when I went to collect it.
Brought out there smallest van - I booked a Transit to make sure it's tall enough.
They then pointed to another van same height just on a higher axle. Still not high enough.
Transit custom ( low model plus high model ) they only give you the length on the site when looking at different vans.

They had Transit high model, but not available. So ended up with a highline van ( over kill ).

But keep bumping up the price, bumping up the insurance , bumping up excess etc.

By time they had finished - would have been a lot cheaper at "Enterprise van hire" for Transit high model.

But they know you have hired the van to collect something that day.

Only allowed to drive rental home otherwise they want it back plus accept long wait at counter on collection and return

After wasting nearly two hours with Europcar, I walked into County Car & Van Hire and immediately felt the difference. James at the counter was clear, honest, and helpful he told me exactly what I’d need and saved me any second-guessing. I came back the next morning with my documents, and within 20 minutes Chris had me driving out of the gate.

The handover was one of the best I’ve experienced: every mark, however tiny, was logged; the van was walked through in detail; and all the controls were explained so there were no surprises on the road. It was thorough, transparent, and professional in a way that gave me complete confidence.

What really sets County apart is the way they deal with people. There’s no robotic script, no corporate nonsense just genuine, human communication from staff who clearly take pride in their work. Friendly, professional, and efficient from start to finish.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again, and I’d recommend them to anyone without hesitation.

Rented a camper van from this outfit for a 3 day tour. The vehicle was unsafe and unfit for rental - brake fluid leak - the alarm was going off within hours and continued to do so throughout the trip.

The office advised us to top up the fluid. On the last morning the leak had become severe and brakes no longer functioned safely.

County had the vehicle inspected, but will not share that report and are now claiming that the customer should not have continued to drive it despite advice to the contrary.

Responsibility and liability - County have never heard of such concepts.

County handled this legitimate issue very poorly - instead of accepting that they bear some responsibility in leasing out unsafe vehicles, they have attempred to lay all of their failures onto the customer.

Stay clear if you value your safety.

Shockingly bad rental company. I Booked and paid for a minibus hire from this company five months in advance. On the day of collection I was informed after several hours of waiting that I was refused Insurance to drive. They said it was because I was using it as a business, charging people to transport them around Cheshire on a golf tour. I was not using it as a business. I had friends from the Uk and a group of friends from America and we were on our annual society golf trip. This was communicated at the time of booking. Our American friends were left stranded at Manchester airport for hours whilst they were trying to sort the insurance out. In the end, they would not insure it. They had no evidence to suggest this was being used as a business. They never asked for any documentation to prove that our tour was a legitimate group of friends. Absolutely terrible and shocking service. This should have all been sorted at the time of booking. It was incredibly stressful for a all of us especially our group who were stranded. Fortunately enterprise was Next Door and they came to the rescue with exceptional service. They managed to get us a minibus and eventually we were able to pick up our friends all be it 5 hours late!

Chester: booked online & all fine. Following a phone conversation the next day, County cancelled my hire (all fair enough) & told me I’d be immediately refunded - three days later & I’m still waiting.

I have used county car and van hire since the mid 90s
Without any issues however I tried to hire a van yesterday morning but because I’m self employed and couldn’t provide my income details I was told that I couldn’t hire a van because of that regardless of having plenty of identification on me and £500 in cash for the hiring of a van..
as I said earlier I’ve used county car and van hire since they started but never again..
A very disappointed customer..

Avoid at all costs, called up two weeks before moving to hire a van, spent about ten minutes on the call to lady who was very helpful asked a lot of questions on load and requirements and booked us a van that would suit, told us the price and date and time to pick up and return. Come to pick up the van and county have no booking or record of us at all. As you can imagine very stressful on day 1 of our move. Counter staff very rude and dismissive simply put couldn’t care less, just desperate to get you out the door, went on to quote twice the price and extortionate deposits, deposit wasn’t even mentioned on the call. Waste of time and very stressful. Apparently I’m now barred from the building as I was rather annoyed and vented my frustrations at the desk which in all honesty is fine with me as wouldn’t wish this kind service on my worst enemy. Whilst driving back my partner had called the office to see what had gone on and all of sudden they have found the booking (even tho I was in the office for 20mins and couldn’t find) but now won’t offer because of my reaction lol at this point I wouldn’t of used them anyway. quite simple: set of liars whatever you do don’t use these jokers. Ended up getting a van for half the price and deposit elsewhere on the same day.

We had to book a van at the last minute due to moving (issues with solicitors) and these two were absolutely amazing from start to finish. Nothing was a problem and they found solutions to any issues we had! I can’t thank them both enough for their help on what was a truly chaotic day of moving! Would highly recommend and the van we hired was in tip top condition and perfect for what we needed.

Been a long time since I’ve experienced such a high level of service. Morgan in the Chester Bumpers Lane depo is a young man who embodies professionalism. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and in safe hands. His easy to understand no nonsense approach made the whole experience effortless. Shocking company. You book online, pay and then they call and quiz you on why you want the vehicle and then tell you they don't have it in stock. Save yourself the trouble and just go to one of the nationals - I went with Budget in the end.

Absolutely shocking service and customer service at Stockport branch, no one ever calls you back and they take money for rentals in advance when they have no intention of giving you the van, and then avoid calls and take way to long to return the money. Your money that they shouldn’t have taken in the first place! Pretty sure thats theft!

Hired a van recently from the Chester branch. Good price, excellent service. Will use this company again, highly recommended. Particularly, Isaac at Chester who was most helpul.
