Subject: Concern Regarding Lighting and Visibility of Parking Payment Machine – Cains Brewery Car Park L8 5AF
Received £100 charge for non payment. I appealed as below.
On 5 March, the car park lighting was poor and there was heavy rain affecting visibility.
I believed I had purchased a viable parking ticket in the dark as I struggled back to my car in the rain. At the top of the ticket issued it clearly states PARKING TICKET. Much of the rest of the ticket/s were obscured by poor printing. Including shading/shadow over the bottom part of the ticket which I can see in lit conditions as saying (in smaller letters) NOT A PARKING TICKET. Extremely confusing in a dimly lit car park in driving rain.
I revisited the site on Friday 13th March to take photographs of how dark the site was as proof. However, powerful floodlights were on, so it would have been perfectly possible to see and read my parking ticket. It was a very different situation from the problematic lack of lighting which was provided when I visited the Night Market on 5th March.
Received reply saying they would accept £30 on this occasion. To save on further stress I resolved to make a payment. However, the 2 options for me to pay by phone or online would not accept a £30 payment. In short, it was as difficult as trying to use one of their meters in the dark , in pouring rain and with misleading ticketing systems!
Brewersgate does not follow their own policies and procedures then threaten court action
I queried whether their signage clearly states that the 1-hr paid for starts/ends from when you enter/leave the area not how long you’re in the parking bay. My daughter who is a new young, driver was shaken after an awful ordeal before returning to her car so took a few minutes to compose herself before driving off. I went through the appeals process as per Brewersgate policy to question whether this was clearly visible on their signage and did not receive a personal response to my calls, handwritten letter or emails but an automatic repeat message and increased fine. Impossible to get in contact and then threatened with court action and to be clear, we have never said we wouldn’t pay the initial fine but we were disputing the clarity of their signage. Unfair, unnecessary and stressful for all. Let’s hope the court is happy with all my evidence of following Brewersgate policies and procedures and has this overruled. We will then be taking legal
action against this company and their solicitors for being in breach of their policies and procedures and causing undue stress. Once this is done I will also ensure this does not continue to happen to other hardworking people.
Sent me a fine for £100
Sent me a fine for £100, said I’d not paid enough. Fine would be reduced if I paid within 14 days, I paid in enough time, they still charged me the £100, not the £60. Zero response from their email. Why is a company in London owning so much land in Liverpool? City council useless! Never park here
Absolute con artists
Absolute con artists. Paid and displayed and received a parking fine anyway. Did not keep the ticket (who does). Provided evidence from my bank that I had purchased a ticket, appeal was rejected almost immediately. The conmen said that there was no evidence of a ticket being purchased almost immediately. They did not check this against tickets bought and if they did then the machine is the issue. I wish I had read these reviews prior. I have been forced to pay the fine as I cannot afford the larger fee but I will be looking at legal ways to recoup this.
Complaints procedure not followed
I'd strongly advise against parking at this companies car park. I received a charge of £100 (reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days) from Brewerygate Limited for an alleged overstay. I appealed, and this was rejected the same day.
I complained to the operator and received a short, dismissive response, which didn’t follow their own “complaints process” at all.
After an investigation by the International Parking Community, the operator claimed that my complaint was "mischaracterised as a further appeal, and was therefore not dealt with as a complaint". However the subject of my complaint email was,
"Formal Complaint – Parking Charge Notice XXXXX”
and the first line was,
“I am writing to submit a complaint regarding Parking Charge Notice XXXXX”.
I find it concerning that this could be taken as anything other than a formal complaint. If there is confusion at this stage, it raises questions about how other matters may be handled. To me, it seems like there is more to this, and this is a very untrustworthy company.
I’d recommend anyone else having issues with this operator to escalate to the International Parking Community. Based on my experience, I would also strongly encourage others to park elsewhere.
Naughty car park - AVOID.
Visited, paid and displayed ticket. The printer didnt print full registration (I hadnt realised) so I was fined £60. When this was highlighted to me I requested the company audit the machines as Id read this was a common issue - seemingly as a way of imposing fines on customers who had actually paid. Company refused so I provided evidence of original stub and payment from bank. They confirmed payment had been received and threatened £150 fine plus lawyers if fine not paid. Read up and spoke to local businesses who say that that this is a regular occurrence and complaint about this car park. The staff on email were incapable and rude. Id strongly recommend avoiding this car park.
Absolue scam!
I'm in the middle of a dispute with them as like so many other people I received a parking charge even though I paid and the ticket was displayed on my dashboard. They claim the same thing that I put in an incorrect reg number and they can't match it to any payments in their system. Like others, I've sent proof of payment but that's being ignored...
Oh I wish I’d have read these reviews…
Oh I wish I’d have read these reviews before I parked there! Me and my friend both got a car parking fine on the same night because even though we’d selected two hours the machine only printed for 2hr! You can’t even see and the machine takes about 5 minutes to even navigate and load! No clear signage or lighting it’s an absolute disgrace. Won’t be paying the fine and these comments are all evidence that the parking machine is rigged! Did anyone actually get taken to court?!
They have been chasing me for months…
They have been chasing me for months for 5 quid. Tried to say i didn't put registration in. I've got proof of payment and money spent at venue. They ignore anything you write and simply chase you. I've had 2 letters before action whilst the crooked IAS reviewed. My arrive don't paying this company a penny. I will have my day in court and wipe the floor with them
AVOID!
Avoid this car park. I paid £4 for 2 hours at the ticket machine, put the ticket on my dashboard. Stayed only 1hr 10 mins. Received a fine nonetheless with CCTV images of my number plate. I had thrown out the ticket, but sent a screen shot of the bank record proving payment. However, my appeal was rejected as they said I hadn't typed in my registration properly. It was only after further questioning (and after I admitted I didn't have the ticket anymore) that they provided a print out as proof. Either their machine is faulty or this is a scam, judging by the large number of other people falling victim. I paid the reduced fine as I don't have time to fight, but will be reporting them. Hopefully if enough people do so, they will eventually be shut down to allow a more scrupulous operator to take over.
Incorrect reg
Parking charge sent out when I had purchased a ticket. Apparently I had put my reg in incorrectly. They lowered the fine down to £20 after proof of payment with bank statement but it still doesn’t seem fair as it was a genuine mistake!
AVOID their car parks
Parked in one of their car parks, paid for a ticket but the machine wouldn’t let me input my full registration number.
Received a parking ticket for £60 which I appealed, had no response, then received a further letter threatening to take me to court and to avoid this I now had to pay £160. I emailed them because I had no response to my appeal, which they claimed they had replied via email that I never received.
They saw I had entered my first letter of the registration number so reduced my charge to £20.
I proved I had paid for the ticket but that didn’t matter. They told me it’s their T&Cs that a full registration number should be inputted, which I completely get, however, if the machine did not allow me to do that, then why would it be my fault.
Advised me to contact the IAS which of course has 1 star reviews on here and apparently a total waste of time.
Ended up paying the £20 reluctantly but couldn’t be arsed with all this hassle and potential backfire it would have had on me.
No doubt the machine is probably rigged to not allow you to use it properly so they can issue you with parking charges. Never parking in one of their car parks again!
Same as everyone else here......paid…
Same as everyone else here......paid for parking and then accused of putting in the wrong reg......provided proof via appeal which was rejected.
There replies on here are false providing proof is irrelevant they will reject all and then use bullying tactics and threats of court to make you pay.
PCN numbers to appeal this are meant to be 11 numbers long - theirs are 5 so you can't appeal with independent companies. Been to Citizens Advice who are forwarding my case to Trading Standards!!
In response to your reply - all lies. Go on any appeal sites they all ask for 11 numbers - I can't appeal via IAS because the PCN isn't recognised. Total con and get your lawyers involved.....you haven't got a leg to stand on :)

Paid at the machine while at Baltic…
Paid at the machine while at Baltic market. Paid £5 for 12 hours but only started an hour then moved on. Just received a fine for £60 , have rang and emailed but no response. What a scam! Anybody going to Baltic market don't even think of parking here ! So many bad reviews, wish i read them before parking. Baltic market can't you do something!!
Absolutely awful experience
I parked on 17th March 2023, have provided proof of payment on my bank statement but apparently there is no record of my registration being paid. This must have been entered incorrectly. My son-in-law paid for his car at the same time and this has been provided so the registration either just before or after his will be mine so this will match my payment. Despite providing evidence of a payment, nearly 2 years later, in the last couple of days I am being asked for £170 or go to court. This was clearly a genuine registration entry error.
Annoying
Paid for 5pm - 2am parking via the "Your Parking Space" app. Parked from 5:35pm - 11pm. Received a fine for "overstaying". Absolute scam, avoid at all costs.
EDIT - emailed my proof of purchase to info at brewerygateltd.co.uk and received confirmation that a refunded was granted. To be fair to Brewery Gate they were very fast and blamed the issue on Your Parking Space not updating the system. Not my fault however and I will be avoiding this carpark going forward as it was a massive inconvenience.

DO NOT PARK HERE *SCAM*
DO NOT PARK HERE *SCAM*
Just money grabbing thieves praying on innocent people. I parked here paid and have proof of payment. I got fined £60 so I appealed and it got denied with no reason. Then I got a new letter sent with a fine of £160 and threatened to be taken to court and to pay solicitor fees.
AVOID
AVOID
Avoid this car park.
As other say. They ignore messages.
The "whats app" number on their web page.
Still left as 1 tick 2 weeks later.
Why have this as option if you can't deliver it.
The parking eye starts billing as you enter.
Which by the time you walk over to the pay point with small children who you have to secure 1st.
Then parking machine was faulty. So took a little time to use pay by phone app, which starts payment from when you start paying and not when you arrived.
Plus they ignore British parking association guidelines on parking.
The car park owners do respond to a few posters. But we all know this is just PR as the person receiving the message can't reply to it.
Never park there.
Hideous scam company - don't pay them a penny :)
After parking in Liverpool at Cains Brewery/Baltic market, they issued a parking charge of 60 pounds days later. When I inputted my details into their parking machine, it charged me 2 pounds, which I paid. When I drove into the parking lot (and this is their mistake), there was ZERO signage visible in the dark that mentions you need to enter your registration BEFORE you leave your car in there, and not after you drive out like most car parks, that charge you once they've calculated how long you've been (you know, real carparks that actually have ANPR). This is not a car park, it's a square of concrete with no barrier or anything, no signage, nothing in the dark that mentions this. I, being a decent citizen, did not try to outsmart how much I owed. I literally do not care about paying the full amount of hours worth of parking - its literally around 4 pounds. So, this parking charge, which suddenly and randomly increased exponentially to 60 whole pounds, makes absolutely zero sense. They take decent, normal folk who have actually paid for their parking and rinse them like a daylight robbery. Therefore, with a terribly non-signposted concrete area/parking lot that doesn't have any electronics or technology that tells you you pay BEFORE, why should anyone be charged such an exponential amount? They did not even realise that this was their mistake - they just assumed I overstayed parking for no reason - I input my details, and THEIR machine, quoted me 2 pounds, which is why I paid it. We cannot allow such disgusting companies to completely rob innocent folk who are not trying to cheat or lie to the system - things like this should go against common human decency. I don't think they realise they have lost multiple customers over this and completely deters anyone from actually using their car park. I would much rather go to a parking place that actually looks after their customers. This is truly disgusting - long story short, I won't be paying a penny to them, and they owe me for the distress.
Apologies to Cains Brewery, I won't be coming again. I have also emailed them on social media as well as sending them the Trust Pilot page to show how much business they've lost because of this scam company. Oh also, to everyone reading, you are not legally obliged to give this bunch of hideous scammers anything!
BEWARE!
BEWARE!! AVOID THESE CARPARKS AT ALL COSTS!!!! Terrible fraudulent company who don’t reply to emails and just keep increasing the charge with no faculty to speak to anyone or appeal via the instructions given on the voicemail on the mobile number provided on the letter (I’ve rang the number on numerous occasions and always goes to voicemail) I presume the ONLY two good reviews on here are to the two con artist who run this fraudulent company!!!
