The DNA matching tool is very limited
As a subscriber for many years, I cannot break a brick wall in my family tree that contains 13,000 people because the DNA matches tool does not allow me to set my own limits on centimorgans. Nor does it show which chromosomes I match on – something that isn't required to determine if a match is more likely to be maternal or paternal. My heritage has had this capability for a number of years.

Ancestry should communicate more with…
Ancestry should communicate more with clients. When you run in problems or want to change things you don't know how to fix problems or change them. Too many updates and changes are happening without helping clients. Need help to change things around. When you are not use to using a computer help must be there for you. Otherwise, I am happy with the information I get.

Years of accomplishment and fun
I have had hours and hours of great detective work, interesting finds and continue to do so.
I found out that my paternal grandfather is actually not my father's father! I am now hoping to find the right person - getting closer I think.
Much has changed in the years of Ancestry..ca
Much has changed in the years that I personally have been a member of Ancestry.ca and each year it has improved as to ease and the ability to gain sourced documents to add to our trees. Thank you Ancestry, for new tools to use and interesting traits we share through
DNA. I love the experience!
5 year Ancestry User
I have been using Ancestry for over 5 years after having written family trees on my Dad's side and my Wife's Mothers side given to me. I have made some new friends especially after having my DNA test.
I usually look at Ancestry a few times a week.

I have learned a lot of my husband and my Mother's side of the family.
Disappointed in not being able to find more on my Dad's side. My Dad's side is why I joined Ancestry.
Two very interesting/cool things have…
Two very interesting/cool things have happened to me thanks to Ancestry.
1. My family hails from Lativa on one side. My great grandfather moved the family from Latvia to Cork (we believe he thought he was going to New York actually). I never realized the two youngest children (my grandmother being one of them) was born in Cork. Only learned that here and have since acquired Irish citizenship. I also found cousins from that Latvian branch of the family who I would not have connected with otherwise.
2. This has not come to fruition BUT someone from a UK Heir hunting firm reached out to me (and cousins) about a relative we have never heard of who died without leaving a will. Not a huge estate or anything but they were reaching out to all of the relatives. I did research this firm and they were featured on a BBC heir hunting firm so are legit. It has been a few years and I have not seen any money BUT they sent me a family tree that included cousins I knew but we were never really sure how we were cousins.
In the end, this estate was worth 30,000 pounds and there are 90 of us so after legal and heir hunting fees are taken off I am guessing I might get enough money to buy a latte but the story is a good one!
I love working on Ancestry
I love working on Ancestry. I find it intuitive and the ongoing upgrades and new database accesses makes it interesting to keep digging deeper into my family history.
How I achieved my family trees
My results were the hints, the works of other family trees, searching through the records. Also using other sources. If I used another source, I tried to acknowledge it.
Some family stories aren't quite true
My family's history was quite sparse, but I'd heard some family stories. After researching, I found most of those weren't true, though they did have some hints of truth. Plus, I found so many relatives (Aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles) that I'd never heard about before.
You are relying on AI instead of actual…
You are relying on AI instead of actual researchers to verify you are providing people the correct information. You are quite literally lying to your customers with your famous family feature. You are telling customers they are related to famous people without actually providing accurate information. With a little HUMAN effort I have been able to prove I'm not related to quite a few people you have falsely claimed are a part of my family. You are taking people's money and lying to customers about our ancestors

I started this journey in Jan 2025. I was surprised and impressed that as I entered more of my known family, that unknown extended members kept showing up. Relatives that had been lost to history were now known again. Some good soul had done the deep dive into past records to resurrect extended family going back to the 1500s! This is perfect for a history nerd and old soul like myself.
Also, I have been introduced to extended cousins that were previously unknown in both Europe and S. America.
My only complaint is how onerous it is to match my DNA results to my account.
Would you please stop with the 2 step…
Would you please stop with the 2 step verification nonsense?!?
I do not need this, it is such a time waster, no one cares about my DNA or family tree so just stop it.

Genealogy has become my happy place.
I have been a member of Ancestry.ca for many years and have developed an extensive family tree. I most enjoy researching my French-Canadian line because there is so much information available. I can go back to the 1600s and find actual copies of birth marriage and death records that lead to the next generation. I find the zoom classes useful in learning new avenues and techniques. It is definitely worth the investment if you want to develop a good family tree with supportive documents. The DNA testing and traits is an fun way to learn about my origins and connect with matches for further information.
An adventure of endless discovery
I discovered that one of my uncles died in WWI. My Dad never spoke of it. It was a moment of deep emotion. It is moving to see the signatures of loved family members on very old documents. I found family in England. Finally, researching is excellent stimulus for the brain. I have been a member of Ancestry for many years.
Comprehensive Genealogy Database
The online genealogy resources are invaluable for researching your family tree. Highly recommend you upgrade to a Pro Tools membership if you are a serious researcher as the extra things it provides are fantastic in helping sort out unexpected or unexplained DNA results. The DNA testing itself takes awhile to get the results, but as long as you are prepared that you may get a few surprises, is well worth seeing your matches and the relatives they connect to.
Paper trail + DNA = TWO brick walls tumble down
Working with the paper trail and DNA over several years, and with the very active and knowledgeable assistance of genealogist Susan Avery of Winston-Salem NC, we explored the "hunch" that the unknown first wife and the known last wife of John Davis d. 1776 of the Jersey Settlement, Davidson County (old Rowan) NC, were sisters.
This first necessitated tracing John Davis's ancestry back through the paper trail, and confirmed by DNA, to Davises in the region of Trenton NJ. This was confirmed by the "Big 700" Y-chromosome test at FTDNA.
Exact dates of the unknown first wife (later identified as Sarah or Sally Scudder) are still thin, but the DNA of as many of her descendants as we could access, overlapped with many trees where the only identifiable link was to descendants of one Richard Betts Scudder of Trenton NJ and his wife Hannah Reeder.
Similarly we sought DNA from the first marriage of John Davis's second wife Mary. Her first husband was one John Parke Jr d. 1759. (The genealogist I worked with, Susan Avery, is a descendant of this first marriage.) The same overlap with Scudder trees was found.
In the case of both Sarah and Mary's descendants there are DNA overlaps with the other ancestral families of Richard Betts Scudder and Hannah Reeder, e.g. Burroughs, Thorpe, Chamberlain, King.
There are different published accounts of the RBS-HR family that do not totally agree, but Mary b. 1698 and Sarah b. 1713 appear to be "our girls." In none of those accounts were they known to have been married and have had children, but see below.
Considering the paper trail in light of this identification, we noted the likely influence of the Great Awakening was what had divided Mary and Sarah from their main family. The Scudders of Trenton were articulate and devoted Presbyterians, descendants of the famous Presbyterian divine the Rev'd Henry Scudder of Westminster Confession fame. The Parkes and Davises became ardent Baptists (of various kinds) as a result of the Evangelical Revival.
We noted that the name Richard appears nowhere among neither Mary nor Sarah's descendants, which we feel is a telling absence, whereas their grandfather John Scudder's name does seem to be preserved in a number of senior "John S." Davis descendants.
In addition, the fractious politics of their home region (the duplicitous land dealings of one Daniel Coxe) that had deprived the Parkes of title to their NJ land (purchased from an agent but not confirmed by the English vendor), saw them flee to near Winchester, Frederick County VA, on the Great Wagon Road, and enabled us to identify one of the many John Davises resident there at the same time as my ancestor. In one court record, one of those John Davises agreed to guarantee the behaviour of one of widow Mary Parke's sons (George Parke) after his father had died. This clinched for us that the Davises had also come along the Great Wagon Road, and then continued on to Salisbury NC and the Jersey Settlement.
We are now amplifying these connections with associated clues. Sarah and Mary had a cousin named Matthias Scudder, who years after them moved to their new county (then Rowan, now Davidson NC), and whose daughter Elizabeth Ann (called Hannah) married David Davis, one of the sons of John Davis d.1776.
This amplificatory effort continues, but we are reasonably confident of the Scudder connection.
A great site for a lifelong family journey
It helped me, a very long time ago, to start my family tree and explore my many different branches I knew nothing about and to communicate with cousins that I never knew existed. Some, later, to meet in person or online. How wonderful!
