Misleading Communication and Appalling Customer Service
I placed a deposit on this vehicle as a serious cash buyer after being involved in a non-fault accident. Finding a suitable replacement vehicle had already been an incredibly stressful and time-consuming process, which is why I acted quickly to secure this car.
I was advised that the vehicle could be transported from Northampton to Wakefield for collection. However, it took over a week and a half to receive a video of the vehicle and arrange the transfer. During this period, I had a short trip booked. Before leaving, I contacted the dealership, explained the situation, and specifically asked whether the car would be held under my deposit until my return. I also asked whether any further payment was required to secure the vehicle. I was given every indication that everything was in order and that there was nothing else I needed to do.
The first thing I did upon returning home was contact the dealership to confirm I was still collecting the vehicle. I was again reassured that everything was fine.
Just hours later, I received a call informing me that the vehicle had been sold.
What makes this even worse is the explanation that was subsequently offered. When I complained, I was told that my deposit had somehow "expired" during the period between my initial reservation and my renewed contact with the dealership. This is simply not true. At no stage was I informed that my deposit had an expiry date, that the vehicle was no longer being held, or that it was back on the market. In fact, the exact opposite impression was given throughout.
To now suggest that the issue arose because I failed to maintain my interest is both inaccurate and an attempt to rewrite events after the fact. I repeatedly communicated with the dealership, made my intentions crystal clear, asked whether anything further was required from me, and was reassured that everything was fine. Had I been told there was any risk of losing the vehicle, I would have dealt with it immediately.
The reality is that I placed a deposit, relied on the assurances given to me by staff, and was then informed that the vehicle had been sold to someone else. The dealership failed to communicate properly and is now attempting to shift responsibility onto the customer.
To make matters worse, I am still waiting for my deposit to be refunded.
The customer service throughout has been appalling. When I was informed the vehicle had been sold, the member of staff I had been dealing with was unavailable, and the person who took the call was dismissive, blunt and completely indifferent to the situation. There was no genuine apology, no ownership of the error and no effort whatsoever to put things right.
I also escalated my concerns to Head Office and was advised that I would receive a response within a specified timeframe. That deadline passed without any response, update or courtesy communication. Being ignored by Head Office after already being let down by the dealership only reinforced my view that customer complaints are not treated seriously.
Having already been dealing with the aftermath of a non-fault accident, I found the entire experience unnecessarily stressful and deeply frustrating. The combination of poor communication, broken assurances, failure to honour what was agreed, delayed refund of my deposit and failure to respond to a formal complaint demonstrates a complete lack of customer care.
This experience has left me with little confidence in either the dealership or its Head Office. I would strongly advise potential customers to obtain everything in writing and not rely on verbal assurances, as my experience suggests those assurances may not be worth the paper they are not written on.
