Retail Representative

I recently had a big issue within my job. I have since left the company but before I did that I reached out to my union (GMB) and I can’t express the excellent support I have received of my case worker Nicola Griffiths from the Cardiff office. She was kind, warm had a really big heart and honestly cared for me. I was being tormented at work, I told her everything she was always at the end of the phone and anytime I needed her at work she came without hesitation. She really stood my ground for me when I should have been doing it, she was strong, knowledgable and helped me to the point where my management where speechless and not expecting her to lay the rules down to which they were breaking repeatedly. She really did put them in their place and they knew. I would recommend GMB but most importantly I recommend the case leader I had. Nicola is the perfect example of what a union representative should be and my only wish would be I would feel safe if she would represent me my entire working life. I did however find that when trying to get through to the GMB I was put through to different people, past around and put on hold constantly before I got to the right person. Other than that, fantastic.

They bully staff

They bully staff. Especially the staff at suez in Ashford apparently the union rep in known for being a nasty piece of work. Would not recommend the GMB union I would not recommend the union rep for suez who likes to bully people with a learning disability set people up because he can

Scam, avoid.

Needed help with a work issue. They wouldn't even tell me if it was the right union for my case unless I paid them the subscription. They never even responded to my please for help for over a month. I eventually terminated the subscription and the only email I got from them was to question why. Absolute scam, avoid.

STOP. LYING

I used to be a member .they have guys on Strike on G4S contract .supposed to be paying strike pay.why then am I getting asked by various members why no strike pay paid Bunch of Lying scum bags probably worst Union in the country. Hopefully someone will call them out and very soon.im due a fortune on back pay but this fo called union is blocking it.gettong close to speaking to my lawyer to Sue.

Wow just a comment on media today…

Wow just a comment on media today involving GMB and two equal pay employees of Glasgow Council. When unions refuse continued representation it seems to me there should be arbitration clauses for MEMBERS to rely on. In this case have GMB as judge jury and executioner makes a mockery of union membership. I am having a similar problem with useless UNISON, totally let my sister down badly a nurse of 30 years. Djm

I was a member of this union for 33…

I was a member of this union for 33 years as an employee of Land Rover. When I actually needed them they were a complete joke. No communication, no support, union officer I actually spoke to was pathetic. Only wish I could claim back the subscriptions I paid for 33 years.

Literally the worst company there is

Literally the worst company there is . I swear i got discipline and got kicked out my job because my manager was a bully . I have been with these lot over a year now and all they say is we can only give you verbal support which is literally nothing. And i was paying £14 a month . I promise you they will not help with anything when it comes to supporting you at work . Its like they sit the office and tell clients to go do one .

This used to be a great union...had great union reps, also don't ever get a crisis loan if you have savings with their Thorne credit union chedle Manchester[GMB] as they don't allow you to take out your savings and hold it hostage until you have paid your loan off..this needs reporting as it is illegal.

Do not waste your money

Do not waste your money. Paid in for 18 years. Needed some advice and have been chasing them for approx 9 months. More than happy to take your money, but do not deliver a service I've paid for.

Joined GMB as my colleagues were…

Joined GMB as my colleagues were members during a restructure. The representative appeared helpful and attended meetings related to my colleagues. I made several calls and emails to GMB but my calls were not addressed or emails and voicemails. I was forced to leave my job due to harassment. I was unemployed when subscription was taken. Repeat request for advice was made. When I emailed a complaint there was further non response. Eventually the GMB PA told me I paid for other services. I repeated my request for a refund as the service I joined for was not provided and that I should have received a discounted membership due to my circumstances. I was told that GMB would no longer engage with me. There was no admission of failing to respond to my emails and calls and voicemails during August 2023 and thereafter. I really enjoyed my job and didn't want to leave. I really had hoped GMB could help to address the bullying but it became too much for me to handle alone.

503 people make the decision for 9000+ not right.

How can gmb say it represents the work force whilst working for g4s. 2 years no pay rise, because of the 9000+ workers on contract 10% 900 are members of gmb who can afford to pay £15 per month. The other 8000 who can't afford are left to rot with no pay rise because 503 people are making the decision on behalf of everybody.
If gmb are fair why not ask the other 8000 people who are struggling with the cost of living now not next year how they feel about the offer from g4s.
Gmb don't help,

unfortunately very poor

Reached out for help regarding an equal pay claim. I had one phone call from GMB which was very positive, and I was advised to copy the representative into emails and let them know if my employer wasn’t engaging so that they could step in. I have since called several times, emailed several times, sent text messages- both to the rep who gave me their details and the Brighton & Hove office. I feel left alone. At the Brighton office, you only get to speak to the mailbox when you call and I am yet to ever hear back..

Tried to contact them because i had problem with deliveroo they couldnt find my union number then they told me its with The London region phoned them no help from anyone so am cancelling and going to just find another i pay over 4.39 a month but never get a service my membership num is454519a

Unfortunately, not good. I was a member 15 years ago for almost 20 years. Just contacted them to seek some support regarding a pension concern only to have someone try telling me that once membership has expired no matter what no service is provided.

Worst union I've ever had the…

Worst union I've ever had the displeasure of knowing exist. My partner is with them, paid the fee for nearly 10 years now, has called on them twice. The first she was ignored and the rep was the HR representative of Sandwell Childrens trust, she's still waiting for a reply.... ended up having to contact a solicitor for help instead because they did nothing. The next time more recently contacted them to be told she needs to go elsewhere. There is zero point having a union if they never actually support. Stay away join someone better. I've been a union rep in the past and this service is OUTRAGEOUS!

Unwilling to pay for quality

I've just concluded a legal claim against a former employer. It took two years, and at the start of the process, I had no idea who the workplace reps were, and I underwent several months of receiving promises from the regional branch that the matter would be referred to a solicitor - however, this didn't occur until I resigned a year later, by which point I was forced to continue paying GMB's membership fees to continue procuring their services... which seems morally questionable. Anyway, prior to resigning I was assigned a GMB workplace rep (who was a trainee) who was absolutely excellent, and who would be deserving of a full 5-star rating alone. But, after I resigned, I was assigned an illiterate solicitor from an external firm on retainer to GMB (Simpsons) who was beyond incompetent, and would have absolutely ruined my claim by openly ignoring a judge's instructions had I not promptly interjected and removed his ability to contact the court on my behalf. I complained very loudly to GMB and ended up having a conversation with an extremely patronising senior officer named Leslie, who spoke to me like I was a child and subsequently ignored my messages. Undeterred, I continued to complain, and my case was eventually referred to UnionLine directly, who were painstaking to deal with, but admittedly clear and knowledgeable. Unfortunately at the point where paying for a barrister became a necessity to facilitate a court-led mediation session, UnionLine suggested GMB had stalled and weren't happy to proceed with funding the barrister, even though my claim had a fairly optimistic chance of success. Ultimately, whilst my matter was resolved with a positive outcome, I only received a third of the amount my claim was valued at by two different solicitors. There seemed to be a definite push from GMB behind the scenes to settle the matter as it was getting costly, but as a member, this shouldn't ever have been a concern. In contrast, it seems no expense was spared when it came to the regional offices (which are enormous) or the wages of full-time GMB employees. Ultimately, as a union, they seem similar to Unison, in that you're likely to end up fobbed off if you don't know what you're talking about. In addition, workplace reps have little-to-no control or influence once matters reach third-party solicitors. Thankfully, my own experience of investigations and the court system saved me from having a slam dunker of a case flushed down the toilet simply because it was began to eat uncomfortably into GMB's profit margins. It's sad to recognise, but one look at the absolutely mind-boggling number of one-star reviews, none of which have been responded to, tells you that their priority is taking membership money from members rather than helping them in times of need. My advice? Read your company policies yourself, learn some basic employment rights, and you'll stand just as much chance of defending yourself when a conflict arises. If you can afford GMB membership, great, extra witnesses and assistance are always welcome. However, the chances of your membership being value for money appear, based on the 54% of one-star reviews, to be slim.
