I've not been a member for very long, in fact I joined just last year. Up until then, I have not had breakdown recovery at all, mainly because the RAC and AA are so ridiculously expensive, but I felt I should have some sort of assistance because my wife is registered disabled and relies on oxygen concentrators to keep her alive. ( yes, after 55 years that has crossed my mind several times.) The battery in the portable machine doesn't last very long and is plugged into the 12v outlet to keep it charged up. Lo and behold, on the 30th May the Volvo S70 I was driving decided to have a rest. ( Volvo's don't breakdown, they rest.) I did try to use the GEM app but my 81year old brain also decided to rest. So I rang the direct line number. It was answered on about the second ring, sadly I cannot remember the young ladies name , but she was brilliant. Fortunately I didn't have my wife with me, but everything was taken out of my hands so I didn't have to do a thing. Within a couple of minutes she rang back to say that help was on it's way. Throughout the whole time whilst I was waiting for recovery I was contacted quite literally every few minutes to ensure I was not getting concerned or worrying about anything by both the young lady at GEM and the recovery driver. The recovery was delayed by about 20 minutes because of an overturned lorry, but apart from that everything went exactly as promised. If your car breaking down could ever be called a pleasant experience, then this was as near as you can get. Everyone involved was fantastic.
I only heard of GEM by good fortune.

Late Sunday evening and took a while top find a recovery vehicle which when arrived did a great job. While waiting a dog handler vehicle stopped and put on its flashing yellow lights and suggested because of position to call Police - who came and waited for recovery. Would have been helpful for phone operator to have suggested calling Police as quite a few vehicles had barely slowed down initially.

Contacted GEM, texted a form. Filled recovery form in, towing caravan suddenly no ancillary lights on caravan and dusk. Gave our details, quick call back to confirm some details. Then call back to advise contacted recovery, couple more questions. Received text to say who was coming, then recovery turned up before too long. Break lights side rear side lights and indicators came on when plugged into their vehicle but also reversing lights permanently on so taped over these and recovered caravan to home address, helped me and made sure everything was ok before leaving to go back to Lincs.

Fairly straightforward breakdown reporting through the app. Can just stay on the phone and talk to a person if you want to.
Given a 2 hour slot for recovery to turn up. Got there in hour and a half.
Got me home. Friendly recovery chap. Had a good chat on way home. Been with GEM for several years but first time used, so far so good.

Excellent service for the second time.
Arrived early, sorted the car and I was on my way in 20 minutes.
The phone also gets answered promptly by a really helpful person.

I had reason to call for assistance 19 May 26.
Within 30 minutes the truck arrived and we were soon on our way.
I pay and re-claim. The money was back in my bank in less than 7days.
Well done, this is my first time having to use GEM motoring assist which I find great value.

Call was answered quickly and politely. And had constant contacts to assure everything was working. The contractor who arrived did not take cards but GEM didn't even tell me but sorted it out directly with them.

I must say again my experience with GEM motoring has been fantastic completely stress free vehicle could not be repaired at rd side and was recovered to a garage of my choice all with in 2 hours of first contact I was not left stranded as the vehicle was at my home address third time of using the service for different vehicles and I have no complaints at all

I broke down while travelling on holiday and just about to enter a motorway. I had warnings come up mentioning handbrake, trip computer one, and unable to read type pressures. No one of it made a lot of sense plus the tyres all looked ok, and the handbrake was off. I didn't fancy entering a motorway with a fault so called GEM. The call was answered very quickly and details taken. The GEM man arranged for a service van to attend and investigate. He arrived in about 25 minutes, checked the details and checked everything and cleared the warning. He diagnose a faulty TPMS unit or sensor andeclared the car safe to use, but needing non urgent attention. The whole thing took about an hour. Excelent service

All ok, chap arrived with breakdown truck, and he was very knowledgeable, and helpful. My car was soon on the breakdown vehicle, and soon delivered to the garage for repairs. Good overall experience

I’ve been a paying member of GEM for several years. The first time I actually needed them, they failed completely. Be aware, they use another contractor for breakdowns called ‘Call Assist’.
I broke down on a rural road in Dorset in the evening. From that point onward, the service deteriorated rapidly. I was explicitly told I was “fully covered” for recovery home, however they then failed to secure recovery and constantly changed their position.
I was repeatedly asked to:
o arrange my own transport
o check for taxis / Uber (with limited signal in the middle of nowhere)
o find my own tyre fitter
I was passed between numerous call handlers, had to repeat everything multiple times, and no one took ownership of the situation.
The most serious failure was when they cancelled my recovery because I had found a tyre fitter myself (which I should never have been asked to do in the first place)
That tyre fitter then couldn’t help which left me with no recovery arranged at all, late at night.
As a result, I was stranded for over 12 hours and had to sleep in my car.
The next morning, I was suddenly told I was only covered for 10–20 miles, despite the previous night’s assurances, a complete contradiction of what I had been told. To make matters worse, when I was finally recovered, the recovery driver told me that his company would have happily taken me all the way home the previous night, they were just never contacted. This completely undermines Call Assist’s repeated claim that “all options had been exhausted.”
Their investigation later upheld my complaint, but only on the basis of “delay”, and offered a pathetic £50 compensation. This is after I have paid around £130 per year for full breakdown cover membership. I have submitted the complaint to the financial ombudsman.
This was not a delay. It was:
• Misinformation about cover
• Poor coordination
• Failure to maintain a recovery plan
• Lack of duty of care to a stranded customer
I was left cold, tired, and unsupported in a remote location overnight. I am a fit male who was on my own. A family with young kids in the same situation could have been in serious danger.
This is not a service you can rely on in an emergency.

Classic car suffered overheating problems. Managed to get home and called GEM. Excellent service given and appointment made for car to be collected and taken to a garage of my choice that specialised in dealing with that vehicle. Service from 24/7 was very efficient and friendly!

Absolutely dire service. Waited 4 i/2 hours for recovery with an elderly passenger on the very busy Mayfield by-pass with nowhere to take refuge. A terrifying experience for both of us. Offered £25 compensation!

Car wouldn't start. Awkward spot, miles from home and on my own. Excellent service straight from my phone call for help. Response time was brilliant recovery there in under 15 minutes. All the staff involved were informative, reassuring, helpful and lovely to speak with. Cannot reccomend them enough. Got me started in 5 mins to get me to the garage for a new battery. Thank you Gem!

Unfortunately I’ve had to call GEM on two occasions in the last 8 months, 1st time gearbox failure on my motorhome which necessitated recovery some 80 miles to my garage,the second time due to battery failure,fortunately a jump start was all that was required.
I must say each time GEM acted immediately with no hesitation. I’ve been a member now for over 10 years , covering car,motorhome and motorbike

Excellent service when I broke down on the M5 last week. It took 2h for the vehicle to arrive, but this was made clear from the outset, is pretty standard, and I had regular calls to ensure that we stayed in touch. The vehicle was loaded promptly and the driver helped me push it into my garage when we arrived. I’ve used the service twice before, and it remains hassle-free and reassuring. Strongly recommended.
