Hi there, Maureen. It is a very common expectation to want to know exactly which traits or ethnicities come from which parent right away.

To see this breakdown, you’ll want to look for the SideView feature within your DNA Story. This tool splits your ethnicity results into Parent 1 and Parent 2. While the system doesn't always know automatically which side is your mother and which is your father, you can usually figure it out by looking at the specific regions or by checking your DNA matches to see which relatives appear on each side.

If you have not yet linked your results to a family tree, the "sides" can sometimes feel a bit vague. Linking your test to even a small tree with your parents' names can help the system categorize your results more clearly.

If you are having trouble finding the Parent 1 and Parent 2 breakdown on your dashboard, please reach out to our support team. They can guide you to the right tab so you can start seeing how your heritage is split between your two sides.

it is very complicated to use. I know my birth father has 12 children and why are all of them marked private. I had this done so I could see my relatives. This is not helping me at all

Risposta di Ancestry

Hi Joey. We completely understand how frustrating it is to see a list of results and feel like the information is being hidden from you. The reason those individuals are marked as private is likely because they are still living; to protect the privacy of our members, we automatically hide the names and details of living people unless they have explicitly chosen to make their profiles public or share them with you.

If you are looking to connect with those 12 siblings, your best path forward is to send a message to your matches through our secure platform. Even if a profile is private, you can still reach out to them to introduce yourself and see if they are open to sharing more information. We know you took this test to find your family, and while those privacy settings can feel like a hurdle, they are there to ensure everyone feels safe while connecting. We hope this helps you take that next step toward reaching out and finding the answers you are looking for.

Hi there, Dana. We understand your disappointment regarding the time it took to receive your results and the additional costs associated with a membership.

While we aim to process all samples as quickly as possible, the journey through the lab can sometimes take longer than expected during periods of high volume. We realize that waiting for those results can be frustrating, especially when you are eager to begin your research.

Regarding the extra costs, the DNA kit covers the lab analysis of your genetic makeup, while the membership provides access to our extensive database of billions of historical records. These records, such as census data and vital statistics, are the tools needed to build a detailed family history beyond your ethnicity percentages.

If you have questions about how to use your current results without a subscription, or if you need assistance navigating the free features of the site, please reach out to our customer support team. They can help you understand what is included in your purchase and how to make the most of your data.

Mostly Disappointed

I was disappointed to have paid extra for the 'traits' feature, to only learn some marginally interesting "likelihoods", eg) "not likely to have a metal sensitivity" (actually, I DO have a metal sensitivity, soooo....)-- I was hoping for something more useful, like "likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease", maybe some more hints about what's coming, so I can be better equipped to mitigate future challenges.
Overall, I was sorely disappointed by how many features remained behind a paywall, and I learned only the most marginally interesting factoids about my ancestry, but absolutely nothing in terms of "building a family tree" (also costs more money, so my tree is more of a twig... oh look, it's my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents-- nothing new learned there, and I can't afford to add my brother or his or my offspring to the tree). I guess I thought the whole experience would be a little more "open" so that I could learn about ancestors and connect with others, but it's more like a paid social media platform that I can't afford to use. Annoying to have spent that money and to have not gotten very much out of it.

Hi there, Endrené. It is understandable that you feel disappointed when the results don't align with your lived experience or provide the specific health insights you were looking for.

Regarding the traits, these reports are based on genetic predispositions rather than medical diagnoses. Because traits are often influenced by both multiple genes and environmental factors, it is possible for your physical reality to differ from what your DNA markers suggest. Additionally, Ancestry focuses on historical origins and personal traits rather than clinical health risks or disease predispositions like Alzheimer’s, as we are primarily a genealogy platform.

We also hear your frustration regarding the cost of building a tree. While viewing historical records does require a subscription, please note that you can manually add as many family members as you like—including your brother and offspring—to your tree for free. The "paywall" generally applies to accessing our massive database of external records, like census data or immigration logs, which help extend your tree back through the centuries.

If you have questions about how to add your immediate family to your "twig" without spending more money, or if you'd like to discuss your trait results further, please contact our support team. They can guide you through the free features of the site to ensure you get more value out of what you have already purchased.

Hi there, Mahara. It sounds like a simple mix up of the activation codes during the registration process, which can easily happen when two people in the same household are activating their kits at the same time.

Because the system simply processes the DNA in the vial and links it to whichever code was entered on the account, it sounds like your sample was registered to David’s account and his to yours. This would explain why you are seeing your results under his name and why his information hasn't appeared yet if his vial is still being processed under your code.

To get this corrected, please contact our customer support team directly. For security and privacy reasons, they will need to verify your identities and the kit numbers to manually swap the profiles or reassign the data to the correct individuals. This will ensure that both you and David have your own accurate results on the correct accounts.

I ordered the kit. Got my sample off to them. They charged me 150$ for the premium account while I’m still waiting for my results, don’t have much to work with still. I would think they would wait until one gets their results before charging for the account. They would not refund me even though I said I would accept the charge once I received my results. Not cool.

Hi there, Lynne. We understand your frustration regarding the timing of your subscription charge. It can certainly feel premature to pay for a premium account while you are still waiting for your DNA results to be finalized.

The reason subscriptions often begin at the time of purchase is to allow members immediate access to our database of billions of historical records. Many users begin building their family tree and researching census or birth records while their DNA is still at the lab. However, we recognize that if your primary goal is to use the DNA-specific features, this overlap can feel like a missed opportunity.

Regarding your refund request, our support team follows specific billing cycles and terms of service, but we would still encourage you to reach out to them again once your results are ready. They can help you make the most of your remaining subscription time or discuss how to best manage your account moving forward.

Please contact our customer support team through our official help center so they can review your account details directly.

Terrible

Terrible, I have not learned anything that I already didn't know. The updates come but nothing new, and when I try to search for "hints" I end up with your search revealed no results but you and UPGRADE your search for a monthly payments starting at $14.99 to $29.99. I have paid $106.00 to start with and was just recently charged another $79.00 and for what, I have learned nothing new.

Hi there, Richard. We’re sorry to hear that you haven't made the new discoveries you were hoping for. We understand how frustrating it is to feel like you are being prompted to upgrade when you’ve already made a significant investment in your research.

When a search reveals "no results," it often means the specific records needed to bridge your family tree aren't yet indexed or are held in a different collection. We recommend checking your "Hints" (the leaf icons) regularly, as these automatically compare your tree to our 30 billion records and often provide the "new" information you're looking for without a manual search.

Regarding your recent charges, we want to ensure you are on the plan that best fits your needs. Please contact our Member Services team via Live Chat or phone so we can review your subscription level and help you get the most out of the records you already have access to.

Hi Donna. We understand the confusion! Many people expect a completed family tree to arrive with their results, but a DNA test actually provides your biological ethnicity and matches to living relatives.

Since we don’t automatically know your specific family history, the names of your grandparents and parents are discovered by linking your DNA results to our billions of historical records. It does take a little bit of "detective work" on your end, but your DNA matches are the perfect starting point to help you fill in those blanks.

We have many tutorials available to help you get started on your tree. We’re excited for you to begin the journey of discovering those names!

I'm not impressed

I'm not impressed, so far. Yes, it is interesting to see my origins, however, I initiated this to fill in some holes in my family tree. So now you are holding that information basically hostage, until I pay for it. IF I had know that, I would not have done it in the first place. The initial cost was enough for me.

Hi there, Pamela. We’re glad you found your origins interesting, but we’re sorry to hear you feel disappointed regarding the family tree details.

To help clarify, the DNA kit covers the biological analysis of your heritage and connects you with living relatives. The historical records (like birth and marriage certificates) that "fill in the holes" are part of our massive digital archive, which is a separate service from the DNA test itself.

We never want our members to feel like information is being held hostage. You can always use your DNA matches and your own family knowledge to build your tree for free on our site; the subscription simply provides the shortcut to our indexed historical documents.

Hi Daryl! You definitely know yourself better than our data does! Traits are based on genetic probabilities—think of it like a weather forecast that says there’s a 75% chance of rain, but the sun still comes out. While your DNA might suggest a likelihood for certain things (like not smelling asparagus), your actual physical experience is the real truth. We appreciate you sharing these 'mismatches' with us—it’s exactly how we learn to make our predictions more accurate over time!

Hi Denis. Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we completely understand your disappointment. It can be incredibly frustrating to pay for a DNA test hoping for a deep dive into your roots, only to be told what you already know!

One of the reasons your report may look like that is because other companies may heavily on "Genetic Groups" or recent immigrant populations. Because French-Canadian settlers in Quebec were a distinct, tightly-knit community for centuries, your DNA shows a very strong, undeniable match to that specific region today.

If you are looking to peel back the layers before your ancestors arrived in Quebec, we would love to help you find those answers. Because the vast majority of early Quebec settlers came from very specific regions of France (like Normandy, Poitou, and Perche), an AncestryDNA test can help pinpoint those deeper European origins. Furthermore, Ancestry hosts the largest collection of French-Canadian and French Catholic parish records online, which allows you to build a paper trail directly back across the Atlantic to the exact villages your ancestors left behind.

We would love the chance to help you break through that Quebec brick wall and discover your deep European history!

Hi Jim. Thank you for reaching out, and we are so sorry for this frustrating login loop!

This glitch usually happens when the direct link in the email conflicts with the active login session already saved on your internet browser.

Since your username and password are working fine, you can easily bypass that broken email link by clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or by opening a fresh Incognito browsing window. Instead of clicking the email link, just go directly to the Ancestry homepage, log in, click the DNA tab at the top of the screen, and select DNA Results Summary.

If the system still blocks you with a registration page, your kit might be tied to a duplicate account under a slightly different email address, so please contact our support team via our online help center chat so we can find exactly where your results are waiting and get you straight into your dashboard! 🌳✨

Ancestry DNA Testing

Although there were quite a few "traits" given (96) they didn't really expound on them, telling me where they originate from, other tha a few mentioned districts in Poland and the Ukraine. I am sure my late relatives were located in many more places than there, and I believe they were gypsy romas, so they would have been more widely travelled, especially through Europe and India. I would like to know how my parents affect my traits and to what extent they are related to my mother and my father as well as my grandparents. For what the DNA testing costs, it should give the person more of that sort of information, and I hope when included into my family ancestry tree that will happen. Otherwise I cannot justify the cost.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your family's story! It is fascinating to hear about your Roma heritage. Because Roma history is defined by incredible journeys across Europe and beyond, those connections can sometimes be complex to pin down to a single district. We also hear you on wanting to see exactly what you inherited from each parent—our DNA Inheritance features are designed to help with this by splitting your results into Parent 1 and Parent 2! Integrating your DNA with your family tree will definitely help 'expound' on those traits and show how they moved through your lineage. We appreciate your feedback as we work to provide more value for our members!
