My experience with Adley Gray and specifically Chantelle Stocks has been excellent.

Having no experience of the criminal justice system, I was falsely accused of GBH with intent by my ex partner. From the initial contact to the end of the investigation which resulted in charges getting dropped and no further action within a few weeks, Chantelle Stocks was an amazing lawyer who took her time out to listen to my story and provide expert advice and provide support to myself and my family. When I first sought to Chantelle, she was immediately contactable and ready to speak straight away over the phone which was immediately re-assuring – I was also given a sense that I was a client not just a number.

When meeting Chantelle for the first time in person she was warm and personable and despite the fact that I was a defendant I did not feel judged.

During hearings, she was able to establish a good presence in court which did not alienate herself. I also felt that having a female advocate was definitely an advantage.

Her style of representation or rather interaction with me was not like a bulldozer and I felt she was open / receptive to input from me and was willing to absorb the deluge of information that I bombarded her with.

I felt Chantelle had a sense of strategy rather than just a two dimensional approach to responding to the prosecution case – which I found re-assuring and uncommon. Knowing when to hold back when pursuing a point and where the opportunity presented itself to take advantage of that for example taking advantage of errors on the part of the prosecution.
Chantelle also seemed to be flexible enough and sensitive enough to detect danger areas and take steps to avoid those dangers whether it be from robustly resisting a potentially damaging pre-sentence report (based on supposition and hearsay) to spotting the dangers of a judge who had then themselves become biased by virtue of the said supposition and hearsay – taking steps to avoid the matter being heard by the judge in question. These incremental responses I believe have the effect of significantly tipping the balance of the scales in the clients favour. In my view such a system (the adversarial system) which really is little more than a David and Goliath contest between the state – (with limitless resources and the individual with very often no resources) really should not exist in a modern supposedly developed society – but for as long as it does, defendants are absolutely dependent on advocates being able to respond and defend defendants from the failings of the adversarial system -whether it be from false statements in police documents or bias from parties in the criminal justice system or bad practice on the part of the prosecution such as the over-charging of offences. Chantelle in the case in which she has acted for me was able to challenge and resist a number of those shortcomings in the system to help ensure balance in the criminal justice system. Unfortunately it is worrying that so many defendants simply don’t have an advocate who will adequately respond to the shortcomings that are endemic in the system.

As well as not judging, and treating you like a human being Chantelle was also mindful of the reality of the lives of most people in the criminal justice system, namely that they are not rich. She actively tried to keep the costs down by being economical.

Stephen Fern was the only lawyer who i found that gave me the best advice and help i could ever ask for. After calling more than 20 law firms giving me the sane information, he was the only one who took a different route in helping me without asking for big amounts of money. His help over the past month has been outstanding, his level of professionalism, fast response on emails and always keeping in touch is who you really need to have by your side to help you 100%.
