Appalling treatment by Rentalcars.Com
On 14 February, 2023, I booked on-line, through e-Sky.co.uk: a return Ryanair flight from East Midlands Airport to Belfast International; car parking at EMA and a hire car for 3 days, with insurance, to be picked up at Belfast. (booking reference: 9452330942) During this booking I supplied my passport details, DOB, etc. I am 78 years of age.
The car was to be rented through Rental cars.com, and on receiving my confirmation voucher, I printed off the terms and conditions via the link on their e-mail.
On the date of our travel, 12 May, all went very well until our arrival at Belfast Airport. On going to the Budget Rental desk to collect the car, I handed over the voucher, my driving license and the 21day certificate from the DVLA, a requirement listed on the voucher. To my astonishment, the Budget operator then asked for my doctor’s letter to confirm I was fit to drive because I was over 75.. At no point before this had I seen or been told of any requirement for such a document. (I could easily have provided one had I known)
I was then told I could not have the car. I then asked for my money back but was told it would be returned to Rental Cars. My female friend, of a similar age, and I were therefore stranded in Belfast, our final destination being Lisnaskea a village near Enniskillen, a 11/2 hour drive away, with our luggage and with no easy way to get there.
Fortunately our host, a Vice Principle of a school in Omagh was able to leave school early to come to collect us, a round trip of 23/4 hours at the end of a hard week in school and costing a considerable amount in petrol.
On our return journey to the Airport, on 15 May, we took a taxi at a cost of £170.
On our return home, I contacted Rental Cars, via the internet, explaining our problem. Thence followed a long interchange with my completing their complaint form many times, explaining that I had received no information regarding any age limit and their response that it was in their terms and conditions accessed via their voucher – it wasn’t. They even sent me an excerpt which they claimed to come from their terms and conditions, stating that cars were not available to over 75 year olds, but this was not part of the document I printed off. When I requested the full document from which the excerpt had come, they were not forthcoming so I still don’t know where this information was published.
As a result of our unhappy experience with Rental Cars, my friend and I are considerably out of pocket: £139.57 for the car rental and insurance for the car, our friend’s fuel expenses, around £75 and our return taxi journey, £170. We also experienced considerable frustration, anxiety and distress during our 2 hour wait at Belfast Airport, as well as being totally reliant on family members for transport throughout our short stay in Northern Ireland.
I believe Rental Cars should not only return our car rental and insurance charges, but also compensation for the other costs we experienced. .
This case also raises the issue of age discrimination. Since the age of 75, I have had to renew my driving license and declare that I am still fit to drive, should this not be sufficient for a car hire company? I am also an advanced driver.
