Outstanding Design, Excellent Independent Installer, but Wickes’ Installation Service Needs Serious Improvement

Our kitchen journey with Wickes Cirencester started brilliantly. The design process with Steve was one of the best retail experiences we’ve had — professional, creative, and genuinely enjoyable. He understood what we wanted and delivered a design we absolutely loved. The design team deserves full credit.

Unfortunately, once we paid the deposit and were handed over to the installation service, everything changed. We were working to a tight but manageable timeline due to being in temporary accommodation, and the kitchen installation marked the final milestone of our renovation. For three months, we heard virtually nothing from our assigned fitter — no updates, no confirmations, no communication at all.

Then, just one week before the scheduled installation, Wickes called to say the fitter had been changed and they could not accommodate our installation until 2026 (originally due November 2025). The stress this caused was unbelievable. In my opinion, this stems from Wickes’ ongoing issues with contractor payments and the shift towards smaller firms that they can push around — and customers end up paying the price in delays and confusion.

Thankfully, Wickes managed to assign a new fitter at the last minute: Red Dragon Ltd (Oxford) — and they were an absolute game-changer. Within 48 hours, they had everything organised: the installation plan, electrics, additional works, and all communication was clear, professional, and timely. In contrast to months of silence, Red Dragon Ltd were a well-oiled machine with outstanding attention to detail. They showed up, delivered exactly what they promised, and we now have a dream kitchen because of them.

My honest advice to anyone considering Wickes:
Get the design — the design team is excellent — but save yourself a lot of hassle and stress by arranging your own installer. Companies like Red Dragon Ltd offer far better communication, reliability, and professionalism than what we experienced through Wickes’ installation service.

I visited my local Wickes store on Monday and had an excellent experience from start to finish. The staff were genuinely lovely and went out of their way to help me find the products i needed for my project. It made the whole process smooth and stress‑free. Very poor customer service to refund request

Went to Wickes for a refund on a surplus to requirement pot of paint. I was surprised to told that I could not have the refund because it was after 30 days of the purchase (by 1 working day). I don't know if or how Wickes publicise this refund policy. It is not unusual to for a job to take more than a month before the surplus material are known. Given that I unwittingly returned the paint one day late, I was further surprised at a lack of a goodwill gesture in this case. Wickes will lose more than the price of a pot of paint because I will be taking my DIY business elsewhere in future.

First rate customer service!

My husband and I often go to this store and have always found Marie so helpful on checkout. She goes the extra mile and is always so cheerful. Today we went in to ask if you could apply for assistance for our village Cricket Pavilion, initially we needed advice about products suitable for the tasks we wanted to do. Simon was so helpful, he said I can’t recommend but what I can do is talk you through the options. Which he did - so knowledgeable and friendly. Having worked at the rock face at one of the busiest airports for 34 years, customer service is very important to me. Both of these members of staff are helpful because they like their jobs and do it professionally. It warms my heart that there are still people like this. Marie explained about what I would need to do to apply for help with our little pavilion so we were able to do exactly what she recommended. Please give these two members of staff a huge thank you from us. Linda and Doug

Steve Rees came to see us

Steve Rees came to see us. Having done a lot of these it was really very nice to speak to somebody who has experience and who can just ‘see it’ right from the beginning. He had a few excellent suggestions as well. Well done Wicks for signing him up because he wouldn’t find it difficult to get a job anywhere.

We have been given a generous donation…

We have been given a generous donation of materials by the store towards enabling a workbench project we are undertaking as part of our Woodland Wellbeing sessions. As a small Community Interest Company we really appreciate and encouraged by the generosity shown by this local business. Both the store manager and Community Champion Marie were so friendly and helpful. Our weekly, fully funded adult sessions, following the Five Ways to Wellbeing, aim to build social connections and belonging in the local natural landscape as well as the multiple benefits that nature access has for health and wellbeing. We recently used Sandra Newsome, Design Consultant at Wickes Cirencester. She was patient and professional throughout and took time to ensure we were getting exactly the kitchen layout we wanted. Her advise was invaluable and we are looking forward to our next appointment with her where we can see the 3D view of our layout and fine tune any changes we think of.
