The worst experience dealing with a gym

I regret to say that my experience at Roko Health Club has been extremely disappointing. After being a member for months, I encountered numerous issues with the gym’s facilities, customer service, and contract practices that have caused significant frustration and concern.

1. **Unsanitary and Hazardous Facilities**:
The cleanliness and maintenance of the gym are severely lacking. The women’s showers and changing rooms have visible mold growth, including on the ceilings and inside the soap dispensers, which poses serious health risks. Tiles in the spa and steam room were broken and dangerous, and the sauna benches were left broken for weeks before being poorly patched up. Water dispensers were moldy and unusable for extended periods, leaving members without safe drinking water. Even the pools often smelled strongly of chlorine or worse, like urine, indicating poor maintenance and cleaning.

2. **Unfair and Misleading Membership Practices**:
I was misled during the contract signing process. I was told by a staff member that relocating would allow me to cancel my membership with a simple one-way ticket as proof. However, after relocating and providing this proof, I was still faced with inflated and unjustified cancellation fees. Instead of the 2 months' worth of fees, which should have been around £120, I was shockingly asked to pay £249.85, and later £179.85 without any clear explanation of how these numbers were calculated.

3. **Lack of Children’s Programs**:
One of the main reasons I joined this gym was the advertised children’s fitness classes. However, the "classes" were either nonexistent or cancelled most days, leaving my child with no activities. What was offered instead was a drawing session for kids, which is not what was promised.

Overall, this gym has failed to meet basic standards of hygiene, transparency, and customer service. The unfair treatment regarding cancellation fees and the unsanitary conditions of the gym make it a place I would not recommend to anyone. I have also documented all these issues with photographic evidence, which I am more than willing to share if requested. Prospective members, be warned!

Terrible customer service

No towels. Hit and miss with the staff. Some are really nice and friendly. Some seem to have zero customer service training and borderline rude. Swimming pool area is cold as a staff leave the door open because it’s too stuffed and he needs to breath but the kids are literally shivering in cold. Echoing other reviews as I also hesitated to leave this negative feedback since this is my local gym, but the level of unprofessionalism and lack of care towards their members and children is unacceptable. The club is being sold to a different owner, hopefully whoever is buying this place will do a complete investigation / re-training of the staffing, if you want to survive as a business. For now, I have given notice to cancel my membership. Let’s see how they will treat me after this review and I’ll update accordingly.

Body attack classes

I've been attending Roko's Body Attack classes for 2 years now and I absolutely love it. The instructors are incredibly friendly and supportive, and I appreciate that I can work out at my own pace. The classes are offered at various times throughout the week, making it convenient to find a session that fits into my schedule.

Weds 6pm body attack sessions are brilliant.

Never been to a gym before in my life (other than once to use the hot tub). Was self-conscious about my lack of upper body strength and worried everyone was going to laugh at me. Got to an age where I need to do strength training to not get injured playing hockey. Started doing weekly body attack sessions on a Wednesday evening at 6pm and can’t recommend highly enough. Sessions right level of intensity with options for all. Inclusive and energetic. Instructors are brilliant.

Gym Fit session

I was booked in for a gym fit today with Harry - my aim was to come away feeling confident in using free weights to help develop my strength. Harry was knowledgeable and ensured I felt comfortable and safe in my exercises - I look forward to continuing this routine.

We meet a lovely lady on reception…

We meet a lovely lady on reception called Massie and enquired about joining. Excellent customer service and everyone that we met was so polite and friendly. The gym was lovely and classes seem great so far. Thank you so much for making membership so easy and food so far has been lovely. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The staff that serve the food at the gym are lovely too. Love it so far Thank you ML :)

Just received a disgusting call from…

Just received a disgusting call from their sales representative Tina asking if I wanted to come back (haven’t been there for over a year because they put me in a horrible 3month notice cancellation contract) after I politely declined to join the gym she had the audacity to say “when you hit 16 st again don’t be afraid to come back” then proceeded to hang up.

No duty of care

I hesitated to leave this review since this is my local gym, but the level of unprofessionalism and lack of care towards their members is unacceptable.

I discovered I was being overcharged for my membership—someone living at the same address with the exact same type of membership was paying around £25 less. While I understand there can be variations in pricing based on when you sign up, I felt deceived. When I reached out to the team via email to inquire about this discrepancy, my message was ignored. Fine. I decided to give notice to end my membership.

On top of that, a personal trainer from this gym scammed me out of £200. I had no previous issues with this trainer and had paid in advance for sessions. Then suddenly, I went up to six weeks without any response from them despite having already paid. This is certainly not how you treat a paying client. This happened in June, and it's now September, and I still haven't received a refund.

When I visited the gym in July, I was informed that the trainer was on holiday and not even responding to the staff. I was advised to dispute the payment with my bank, but that's difficult since I used a debit card. They seemed to not care at all that I had been robbed by someone they endorse and promote.

It’s frustrating that in both situations, I’ve been let down and neglected by the staff. For a gym that charges over £100 for memberships, you expect a level of basic decency and professionalism.

A sorry excuse for a health club.

A sorry excuse for a health club. This place was probably once a nice gym but years of underinvestment are evident. The place is dilapidated and in a sorry state of disrepair.
You are only important up until you sign up for membership, and watch out for the draconic 3 month's notice period they tie you in for.
There is almost always something out of order, a couple of treadmills, a toilet cubicle or two.
The men's changing area and toilets often stink of urine, they're so bad sometimes my son retches at the smell.
The gym floor is a mess, it's a game of hunt the weight plate a lot of the time as no one cares about tidying up, the staff are completely passive and so there's very little discipline with putting things back.
The sauna is currently a rotting mess, with hazard tape covering all the broken benches.
This month saw random closures which I suspect are to do with the dire financial position the business is in. I would recommend not joining as I wouldn't be surprised to see the business put into administration at any moment, swallowing up your membership fee in the process.

Thank you Harry

I normally find gyms a little intimidating but Roko Nottingham is just brilliant. I’ve just had a fitness session with Harry. He was incredibly encouraging and helpful. I now have the knowledge and enthusiasm to complete a full body workout that is really challenging but also achievable. I would not hesitate to recommend both Roko and Harry to others.

Avoid this place at all costs!!

Avoid this place at all costs!!! It is an absolute nightmare trying to cancel as they threaten you with debt collectors. They also don't care about people's mental health they just demand money. PLEASE AVOID terrible place. You will get to self into a long contract with out realising.

The no towel gym

I joined Roko in May 2024 and found the surfaces very slippy. When I visited in early June I was greeted with a sign on reception that towels are no longer available, I had to drive home to get my own towel. No management on duty to discuss this and no email notification about the removal of the towel service.

In my view the gym have breached their contract conditions and I submitted my request to cancel my membership. I received an email reply four days later stating I cannot cancel my membership and am now trapped in a gym I don't want to be involved with.

I have not been issued a membership card as the reception machine that issues the full membership ID card is broken.

I have fallen twice in the gym changing rooms due to wet surfaces.

The members car park is full of potholes on a rough gravel surface.

When attending the gym all I hear is members complaining of how standards have dropped.
