Price discrimination - charging UK customers £20 more than US customers for the same dress

I was delighted to see Modcloth have FINALLY reopened their online store to those of us in the EU. That delight didnt last long though.

I'm based in the UK and thought thr prices seemed very expensive. Well, they are - if you're shopping on the UK version of the site! The same dress costs $79 (£62) on the US site or £82 on the UK site. That's a HUGE difference and amounts to price discrimination based on the buyer's location. You're selling the same item, so the price should be identical, regardless of where the consumer is located in the world. Sure, add on international shipping costs - which by the way are also expensive with Modcloth. And you're likely to have customs fees to pay as well.

But why charge £20 GBP more for the SAME DRESS to a customer based in the UK? Doesn't cost you any more to make it. Any cost for delivery is covered by your international shipping costs surely?

Really shocking.

For our European customers, the costs of duties/fess are included in the price of the item, once you switch the site to display your currency. So, instead of seeing only the cost of the item in your currency, you'll see that, plus the cost of duties. I have been waiting weeks for my…

I have been waiting weeks for my ModCloth order. When I go to the tracking link they provided via email the site (ppxtrack) is static with no updates for three weeks. Their contact link on the page is dead and my browser says “insecure site”. So I have no idea where my order has got to.It all seems dodgy.

I have written to ModCloth customer care twice and got zilch response. What’s going on? I will never, ever order from this site again.

I have ordered from ModCloth for years. I am never disappointed in the quality of the items I order. I love that the models on the site are of different shapes and sizes with measurements listed. This makes It easy to get the right size ordered. If the fit isn’t right the return process is really easy.

Modcloth will always be a favourite

I am really surprised by the negative reviews. I have been a loyal international customer for many years with no hiccups. I always get great quality clothes and get lots of compliments for the unique patterns and designs. Returns are easy. I've used the customer chat with no issues previously. My dresses have had many many wears and I wash them on normal cycle in the laundry - no issues with quality or fading. I come back to this store again and again

Multiple oversales; Won’t be ordering again!

For the THIRD time I have ordered an item and then Modcloth has cancelled my order do to an oversale. I gave them the benefit of the doubt trying to order for the third time but I was once again let down. I was given a 20% of coupon as an apology. The funny thing is, the item I ordered is still up on their website for sale! There have been different excuses every time they oversell a product. I won’t be attempting to order from them again because it will just be a let down!

Hi, Tricia. I'm very sorry for any disappointment. I know that oversales can be frustrating. Oversales can occur due to the website not updating quite as quickly as our physical inventory. This can result in items showing as "available" when they have actually sold out. Typically, the items come down when the site catches up, but there can sometimes be technical issues that cause the item to remain on the site. As soon as this is reported to our team, they go to work to fix the issue. There may also be oversales due to inventory being in the incorrect location in our fulfillment center. We are a small operation with one fulfillment location, so these things can sometimes happen. Please rest assured that we are always working to fix these hiccups to try to prevent them in the future. I apologize for any disappointing experience. I will be sure to share your feedback with the appropriate teams.

Going, going...

ModCloth has gone from bad to worse, which is very sad because I was a loyal customer for years and happily spent thousands there. I decided to give them one last try because they are having a Memorial Day sale but when I went to apply the Memorial Day sale code, it said that it is not valid. Today is Memorial Day, why is the Memorial Day sale code not valid??? I have never, ever had this happen before at any other online retailer. This is truly ridiculous. Plus, their mobile website menu doesn't work.

ModCloth is like that terrible boyfriend who is red flagging all over the place but you just want to give him one more chance... but I think I'm done giving chances, I doubt I will ever shop at ModCloth again.

I wanted to come back here because a lot of these negative reviews made me tentative towards placing my order, but my experience with Modcloth was great! My items arrived quickly, and are now some of my new favorite clothing items!! They look exactly like the photographs and are made of such comfortable and sturdy materials!! if you're on the fence about Modcloth, I say go for it because my experience was wonderful!!

Drastic reduction customer service

Have been a loyal international customer for about 10 years but what is going on lately? No response from customer service. The chat link doesn’t work so no other option than to email (not making an expensive international call) and just no response.

48 hours after purchasing a gift voucher to an email address no voucher in the email yet the order had shipped immediately after purchase :/

Can’t believe you can reply to this out of office hours within 5 minutes but the 2 customer care emails I sent IN office hours still no responded to. And yes, I tried to utilize the chat option IN office hours- I made it a point to check every time I tried with the time difference.

I waited over three months for my suit…

I waited over three months for my suit to arrive. They kept telling me it was posted when it was not. My Emails have been ignored and when the suit arrived it was the wrong colour and cheap looking.
Avoid these scam merchants.

I love ModCloth

I'm surprised that ModCloth has such bad reviews. I've been buying from them since June 2019 and have loved everything I've purchased from them. The quality is much better than other sites. Their clothes fit me very well. I get lots of compliments when I wear their clothing. Customer Service has always been friendly. One time they messed up my order. When I called they were very apologetic and they sent me the items immediately after I hung up with them. Their return policy is great. I love ModCloth and will continue to purchase from them!

Customer service only through direct call/chat. No response to emails.

They refunded a fraction of the refund amount multiple times and haven't reacted to any of my three emails about the matter.
This is unbelievable. The first order I sent back, I only got 1 of 6 items refunded!

EDIT: After reaching out to the customer service directly, the refunds seem to have been worked out.
However, it's still a bit odd that three emails went ignored.

Modcloth problems with non-existent credit

Modcloth sent me an email message, telling me I had a $69 merchandise credit. I didn't think it could be true, but looked at my order history, and I had returned something. I assumed the credit went back on my card at the time, but then thought maybe I'd forgotten to check. They said the credit was about to expire. So, I found a dress to order, and the total came to just over $71. Then the credit applied, and the total was $2.11. I authorized a payment through PayPal for $2.11. The next day, they sent me a message saying that "oops"...I didn't have a credit, and that I would be charged full price. I tried to stop the order. But, by then, it was already processed, and they couldn't cancel it. I couldn't stop the PayPal payment either. I sent a message to their customer service team. They said they were "sorry to hear I'd changed my mind." I have had a difficult time getting a refund. For this reason, I will NEVER do business with them again. And I encourage others not to, either.

Junk products

Junk products. Trust your gut and don't buy. Items are made with very low quality material and craftsmanship, and return policy conveniently omits the fact that you'll have to pay for return shipping to CHINA if you want a refund.

Was a bit worried about the order I…Very very happy

Was a bit worried about the order I placed using a promotional coupon, as I read the poor reviews here while waiting for order to arrive. I had ordered from ModCloth several years ago and was happy w my purchases.
So my order came. I had received free express ship and it was right on time.
Cocktail dress is lovely and unique but a little large so I may return. But quality is good. Shirt dress is amazing and fits perfectly.. I ordered two sizes of the same skirt bcz I’m not familiar/confident of ModCloth sizing yet. So the skirt is just great and I’ll return the one that does not fit. Last item was a retro looking blouse. Home run. All lovely. One note: I read all reviews and find someone of my weight/height and order size according to that feedback. Seems to work.

Poor quality clothing shipped in ripped bags

First bag arrived ripped wide open and taped back together with only two of my ten items inside the bag and no packing slip or return label. Customer service was very kind and helpful and express shipped me the rest of my items. Got them in today and this bag was also horribly ripped and somehow melted?! Some of the items were damaged with holes in them because of the ripped package. No respect for their customers. Who ships $400 worth of clothes in a ripped grocery bag?!

The damaged items ended up not mattering because the quality and fit of the clothes was so poor I would literally never wear them. Not even the wrong size, just a horrible fit and poor quality sewing and fabric.

Looked nothing like the pictures online. The leather jacket was permanently creased and unwearable. I had such high hopes because the pics looked so cute online. I would never order from here again. Luckily they have a good return policy (besides providing your own box since they ship in bags...) because I’m sending all of these crappy clothes back.

Received my Lace Trim Button Front…

Received my Lace Trim Button Front Floral Maxi Dress and it was noting like the picture was so disappointed and felt ripped off!
It was to be buttons all the way down the front and mine had 3 buttons. The lace trim around the neckline was missing and the pattern at the top part of the dress instead of being even on both sides was missing half of the pattern on 1 side will never buy another thing from this company as what you see is definitely not what you get!!!!!
