I reported Japanese knotweed through my estate management company back in April. This company already had a 10-year treatment programme in place for knotweed on the estate, due to run until October this year, so I expected the issue to be dealt with promptly.

They subsequently argued that the knotweed I reported fell slightly outside the boundary covered by the existing programme. My management company therefore arranged a new 10-year plan specifically to include this area. Someone from the company came out, confirmed that it was Japanese knotweed, but did not actually treat it.

It is now mid-September, five months after I first reported it, and the knotweed has been left untreated and able to grow throughout the entire summer.

I have repeatedly chased this through my management company as well as contacting the company directly. Even getting a response was difficult. It took three emails over the course of around a month before anyone replied to me and told me they couldn’t discuss it as I wasn’t the point of contact they had, even though it’s my property.

I find it completely unacceptable that a company specialising in Japanese knotweed management can confirm its presence, have a treatment plan in place, and then allow five months to pass without treating it. The lack of urgency and communication has been incredibly frustrating.

If I were the freeholder choosing a contractor to manage Japanese knotweed on an estate, based on my experience I certainly would not choose this company.

I was worried that I had knotweed in my garden. I looked online and found this company who gave free diagnoses on the submission of photographs of the plants. This I did and within a couple of hours I heard back from them verifying that I did not have knotweed which was a huge relief. So thank you very much.
