DONT STAY AT DUNSTON HALL
Went to Dunston Hall in May with a golf society. The golf course was good and so was the evening meal. However staying overnight was a real mistake. The double room was tired and the bed was two 3foot beds pushed together. Not unusual except that they were marginally different heights. The mattresses were extremely hard and uncomfortable and the two duvets supplied were thick and heavy. This resulted in an inability to sleep. The hard mattress was like sleeping on the floor and the duvet was too heavy and far too warm. Eventually we stripped the sheets off the duvets and used them as over sheets and the duvets as a a mattress cover/softener. Absolutely ruined the following day. Would strongly recommend not staying overnight!
Great golf and great people
This was our second time staying and playing at Dunston Hall Hotel after a ten plus year gap, and we were more than pleasantly surprised.
More picturesque than we recalled, the hotel provided all you would expect from a Golfbreak package with the added garnish of a young and accommodating staff. However, it was the golf that truly capped the stay. Having arrived much earlier than expected, Peter in the Pro-shop could not have been more accommodating in getting us on course earlier.
Make sure you buy a stroke-saver as two holes in the front nine are sharp doglegs, and it helps to know if you’re going left or right! This course has everything; it’s beauty would even have Mark Twain thinking this was a good walk. Some mighty par fives are great for long hitters and narrower fairways cutting through the woods offered a chance to see if you could shape drives left or right. The conditions were remarkably good given the recent weather, and the sometimes challengingly placed or tight greens rolled really well. You’ll love the island green and bridge on the back nine.
On our last day, a facial proved more appealing than 18 holes for my wife, and again the Besuty Salon manoeuvred appointments to get her an early morning slot (just as the Front Desk found space to move our dinner time forward on the first night), while Peter didn’t hesitate in offering me complimentary balls for the driving range. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
Expensive restaurant and small portions
I went on an overnight golf break that included 2 rounds of golf, dinner, bed and breakfast. The golf course was OK, although a bit muddy because it had been raining. I asked for a quiet room and this is what I got, so I was happy with that, but the bed was very hard and uncomfortable. The room was a bit shabby with a torn net curtain, dents in the door, and a peeling bath panel, but it looked clean and tidy. The big disappointment though was the bar and restaurant. I paid £7.95 for a small gin and lemonade, and was told at check-in that there was a £28 limit on dinner. As most of the main courses on the limited menu were around £25 give or take, that meant you would be hard pressed to have a dinner within the limit. It was table service so I ordered sea bass (£25) and had to order chips separately (£4.50). One fillet of sea bass arrived on a bed of samphire, with a woody spring onion, which looked very pretty but that and the small bowl of chips that arrived was not very filling after having just played 18 holes of golf, so I ordered a dessert at £8.50 too (it would have been £12 if you wanted cheese and biscuits instead!) and a thin sliver of treacle tart with a dollop of ice cream arrived. Still hungry, I retreated to my room for a banana that I'd brought with me. Breakfast was self service and again the choice was limited, with no little pots of flavoured yoghurts. The pastries were very small. It felt like a lot of cost-cutting was going on and I shan't be visiting again.
Shocking stay
Shocking stay, room was very tired and run down, dirty and dated. Breakfast area was filthy, had run out of most things, staff didn't seem to care at all, very old food and crumbs all underneath the bain marie, had not been cleaned for a very long time. We had some glass in our pepper pot and wen we went to get our food, the waitress had sat someone else in our seats even though our jackets were on the chairs. A total waste of money, when I complained on departure I was told we could have a small discount on a future stay, why on earth would I return to this place!
I’ve been trying to call throughout…
I’ve been trying to call throughout January via Q hotels booking service to book a spa break on their special offer. I’ve been in a queue for almost an hour each time before giving up, the message says it might take 20 mins, what a blatant lie. You can’t book spa breaks online either and the hotel doesn’t accept direct calls. The offer expires today, what are the odds that if I rang tomorrow they’d pick up. I also emailed and so far no response. Judging by the reviews on here I’ve had a narrow escape!
Disappointing Honeymoon
Myself and my husband booked Dunston Hall Hotel for our honeymoon from 5th December - 9th December 2022. We were very disappointed with the room allocated, this was tired and in need of decorating, the furniture was scratched/marked, drawer handles were loose, the door clearly was red in a previous time and the knocks and scratches showed this. The bathrobe hook behind the door was broken. Toilet rolls were a premium! Tea and coffee was not replenished daily. Carpet could do with a clean as with the net curtains.
The hotel left a postcard and a miniature box of 3 lindor chocolates outside our door to congratulate us on our homeymoon. This we found very insulting, three chocolates!!!
We ate in the Restaurant, booked a table and what a circus, we were seated and after a 20 minute wait my husband had to ask for a drink, when the drink arrived it had ice even though he specifically asked for no ice, another 20 minutes passed before he got his drink back, diluted by the ice that had sat in the glass before they removed it. We ordered mussels for our main course which came with chips, well that’s what the menu stated, we had to request our chips as they didn’t arrive with the mussels. We then waited over 30 minutes for our plates to be removed and again had to ask to order our desert. A very disappointing experience.
Service in the bar was very slow with people pushing in, the staff should be trained to acknowledge who comes in when to serve in this order.
We were told the hotel was short staffed…. How can that be, it’s Christmastime, does the hotel not plan for this?
We used the pool during our stay, this was quite cold. There was also a family with three children using the pool, steam room and jacuzzi, their children were running riot and using the jacuzzi as though it were a children’s pool. There was no one ever seeing what was taking place.
Lastly there were numerous coach parties arriving and departing during our stay, constantly blocking the entrance and reception.
The only good thing offered was their breakfasts, these were great.
This did not meet our expectation from what we saw on the website, a very disappointing honeymoon and a disappointing hotel.
Upsetting Christmas stay. Waste of money.
This is a waste of money hotel. Its maximum is a 2 star, Bad Management, Bad waiting staff, Bad housekeeping, And very Bad food . A very Bad and upsetting 4 Day Christmas package. Needs pulling down and re building with the right people in it. Stay clear of this hotel.
Hotel is lovely and has a nice…
Hotel is lovely and has a nice atmosphere the staff are friendly and efficient
The big downside is the prices on food and refreshments a fish finger sandwich £10.75 ??? The portions are very small as well just not worth the high costs. If you want a decent meal you have to look elsewhere .
Awful stay at a awful rundown place
The receptionist is one of the rudest people you can meet. She is a disgrace and should be sacked. Cut my stay short due to rude staff and slow service. They took 1 and a half hours to bring out food for a child.
They made nonsense up about why the food took so long and everyone was upset about the wait.
Don't stay here. They have gone downhill and should be closed. If you're reading this dont make the mistake of paying to stay at this awful place
1 star food hygiene rating - overall poor
A 4 star hotel which doesnt deserve a star rating. We stayed for 6 days and paid 2k for a penthouse suite to get the best of luxury on offer. It couldnt be further from the truth.
The hotel looks nice from the outside, however the inside reveals a different experience. For advertising as a 4 star ( with 5 star prices ), it certainly wasnt as the days progressed. The room was very dated, probably over 20 years ago, with lots of retro furniture of a mix nature. For the price you woulnt expect this, faulty heaters, no room service (apparently not available but they haven't updated the web site). The shower has redundant and broken jet system with poor water pressure. There was a really dated kitchen , however of poor maintenance and the dishwasher didnt work. Pointless. Dust and cobwebs and floor not cleaned in the whole 6 day stay.
As the days progressed, we naturally sampled the food in the hotel and experience and witness the following:
Lookwarm food.
Lots of food run out for days, crips, moet, coronation chicken, pea soup, pale ale, tomahawk steak, rib eye steak, rate bit cheese.. Clearly no stock management.
Lots of mistake with ourselves and other people's drinks, food orders. ect.
Very slow service, could take 45 minutes to get a drink a main meal.
Random when you get you food, it was clearly not is preference of order.
We observed hotel prioritising bus tours for old people and weddings, despite people in hotel spending a lot of money, and being serviced first
Food was average at best. but charge 5 star hotel price.
Service staff have 0 customer services skill and mostly early teens, but old staff poor also.
Breakfast was the same greasy busy self service the whole 6 days, they couldnt even make me a boiled egg. ( Never been to a 4 star hotel where they are not flexible and offer service , or an alternative cooked option, eggs benedict, table service ect. )
Other general points , no heating in hotel except our room , clearly cost cutting. Ladies' toilets on ground floor out of order for nearly 4 days, again poor for 4 star.
The biggest insult is we found that the hotel is not displaying its UK food star rating ( no wonder ), like all reputable business. 1 star food rating out of 5 , major improvements required dated June 2022. Shocking. No wonder we had upset stomachs.
Just google UK food standard and search for Dunston Hall.
General staff including manager dont really care as they are happy to make quick money from bus tours and wedding , and even bus tours complained. Avoid at all cost.
Attended for a wedding
Attended for a wedding.
Staff slow and really didn’t seem to know what they we’re doing
Food was disgusting beef so raw and fatty could not cut it let alone chew it.
Meal placed infront of me with a roast potato with a huge eye in it!
Unable to eat any of this and it was cold.
Desert could’ve been better I had cheesecake which the coulis on the plate tasted and looked exactly the same as the raspberry sauce you put in your ice cream, cheap and nasty
Partner had sticky toffee pudding which was cold
Will never return or recommend
Pure Greed
On arrival of the Dunston Hall driving range we noticed the prices for a basket of balls had been increased by a staggering 40%+. A basket of balls costing £6.00 now £8.50. I sincerely hope these greedy businesses fleecing their customers during an already precarious financial time for many get what they deserve and go out of business.
Great place, Dunston Hall
Had a lovely stay at Dunston Hall. Pool is so good, had a treatment in Lilac Room which was the best massage I've ever had by Julie. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Issac was our waiter and he gave good service and was really pleasant. Hermoine also very pleasant polite, friendly. Room are ok. Big Super king beds and clean. Only negative is that they seemed to be under staffed and breakfast was a bit poor as in no plates and tables needed clearing.
Party of 22 golfers
I was with a party of 22 golfers and for 2 nights our primary server was Rosie and was a credit to your hotel attentive friendly and professional. May I add very patient as half of our group couldn't remember what they had pre ordered.😁👍
NO REFUND
Had been booked in with a works Christmas party and meal 4th December, had paid £30 in advance. Came down with COVID the Sunday before and work were informed Monday 29th, but on checking with Dunston Hall no refund would be made at this stage as 'food would already have been ordered'. This was a genuine reason for a cancellation and in the present climate consideration for such a situation should have been in place. I understand that hospitality services were suffering, but customers should come first. Unfortunately COVID didn't give any advance warning and it wasn't through partying but no doubt by being a key worker that the virus was contracted.
We stayed for one night with treatments…
We stayed for one night with treatments and use of the spa. Evening meal was great and our waitress, Patricia, was helpful and attentive.
Breakfast was was also very good.
All in all a very enjoyable stay
Disappointing afternoon tea
I was treated to afternoon tea by my parents for my birthday. The seating area was clean and tidy but was deserted and it took us a while to find someone to seat us. The server was pleasant and polite. The hot drinks took a while to come out and the food took even longer. I personally didn’t like that the cake stands stood on the floor. The sandwiches were nice as was the scone, however the clotted cream came in one dish to share. The mini cakes were dry and all but one tasted stale. As there was nobody else in the seating area there was no ambience. When it came to paying we found the price had increased from £21pp which was quoted on the website when booking two weeks ago, to £25pp, which is quite a rise especially given the quality of the food. For such a fabulous building which has always had a really good reputation locally, this was very disappointing and I’m sorry to say I would not recommend.
Stayed at Dunston Hall
Stayed at Dunston Hall, Norwich for the weekend from 5th November til 7th November 2021. Right from the start the service was second to none, all the staff were helpful and friendly. The suite we booked was fabulous and the breakfast was very well organised and very tasty. We also booked a function room for my surprise birthday party, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and attentive. Made our stay just perfect thank you to all the staff.
Stayed a night and payed extra for food…
Stayed a night and payed extra for food to be included in the stay , hotel room brilliant , server was polite ,food was lovely ,the worst parts to the stay were that we ordered starters and we finished the starters before the food arrived main course came out quick , took 40 minutes for someone to come over to take our dessert order
Dog barking constantly when sleeping aswell
We stayed at Dunston Hall this week
We stayed at Dunston Hall this week . When we arrived they forgot to put the champagne in the room which we ordered . Worse was to come however no one told us that it would carvery all week and no other options , bar menu closes 4.30 sunday . The carvery was the worst standard food I ever tasted ,cold, unappetising, almost uneatable, breakfast just as bad.II complained but no manager came to speak to me . changing rooms dirty not cleaned in pool area , shame as building is lovely could be made better . when we asked on the sunday the waitress looked at her watch to ensure she could serve us bar food at 16.26 pm . The fact I complained and asked to speak to duty manager but it never got passed on . I think the standard of food for a 4 star hotel was shocking
