Great service.

I recently purchased a used Octavia from Derek Slacks, the serviced I received from Chris in sales was excellent. He went above and beyond to put together a deal.
They also gave me a fair price for my part exchange.
I had a minor paintwork issue with my Octavia, Chris had it immediately sorted for me.
Many thanks to the Derek Slacks team for a great service, I would buy from them again.

They don't answer the phone on Saturdays

My car was damaged on Friday night so I tried calling Derek Slack Motors on Saturday morning 3 times, between 9.30 & 10, for a quote to repair my Skoda. The first and second calls eventually went to voicemail and the 3rd cut off before getting to voicemail! Very unprofessional!

3rd Skoda Kamiq from DSM.

Brought my 3rd Skoda Kamiq from this garage back in March 2025.Once again a no hassle experience and I am very happy with the car.
Why do I travel from Whitby to purchase a Skoda from Slacks,when I could go to Scarborough and York.The reason is I can't do with all the hassle and high pressure selling you get in other dealerships.I always think Andrew the Sales Manager gives me the best deal he can possibly give me and the car's are always spotless on collection.
Last summer my partner also bought a used Skoda off Slacks and was dealt with by John Holroyd.Once again a no hassle experience and a excellent car was supplied.However,as always the Sales people aren't the ones who sell us a car, it's the way you are dealt with, if you have a problem and I can always rely on the service department to sort our issues out, which between 2 cars has been a faulty reverse light, so you can't really complain at that.

Best executive salesperson

Super service from the 1st initial phone call.
Ian Phillips -sales executive at SKODA greeted us at the door, flawless customer service, going above and beyond to help myself and my brother purchase his car.
Ian explained everything at the right pace and pitch, totally felt 100%with his advice and knowledge…. Spot on commitment and service.

Wonderful experience!

Wonderful experience!! I hate car buying at the best of times but going to Derek Slacks was a breath of fresh air. I was on the lookout for an electric car and visited Derek Slacks just to have a look and ended up walking out having bought a Skoda Enyaq on an amazing deal!!! Was not pressured at all and the whole experience from beginning to driving away in my Skoda was fantastic. I have to give a shout out to Andrew Fowle he was top notch from beginning to the end, even when I went back with an issue it wasn't too much trouble. I am now a very happy Skoda Enyaq driver.

Second new car from dealer

Bought second Kodiaq from here as the service received when I bought the first Kodiaq was excellent. So yet again the service on buying the new Kodiaq was again excellent. Nothing was any trouble to sort by Andy the salesman. Any time I have been in the dealership everyone has been very friendly courteous and helpful. I very very rarely write reviews but on this occasion i just felt I had to share my positive experience and opinion.Would definitely recommend to others.

A very good experience 🤩…

We recently had some mechanical problems with our Karoq so booked it into Derek Slack Motors where we purchased the car 3 years ago. The service advisor Jo organised for us to use the courtesy car which we had for a few days which was such a help. We were kept informed and collected it on Saturday. The staff are always so helpful and extremely friendly. I would highly recommend them. 😊

Absolutely Avoid this garage

Absolutely Avoid this garage , my son wanted this skoda citygo monte -carlo,
Registration YH67 RHJ , immediately on seeing the car noticed the front brake discs were worn and lipped, asked Ged if they would be putting new discs and pads on ? His reply was if it needs them they will be replaced, my 18 year old son who had just passed his driving test then paid a £300 deposit ,
Due to circumstances beyond his control i rang the garage within 3 days to let them know my son would not be going ahead with the purchase and ask for his deposit back , NO was the answer ,
My son then checked out the mot history of the car and to his horror found out this little car has an horrific history on the government mot website

Ged rang me just to confirm my son definitely would not be going ahead with the purchase, speaking to Ged I asked if he had replaced the front discs and pads ? His answer was they have replaced the pads but not discs but they have taken the lip off the discs ( grinder I presume) so the pads fit correctly, on the mot site the discs were given an advisory 12 months ago, this car had a very poor service history having missed a service, had also not been taxed for a year ,
Obviously due diligence was definitely not carried out when this car was taken in part exchange, this car was fitted with after market springs, but the mot history says the springs were loose at the top , split boots , electrical wiring damage etc etc ,
Yet they were still asking full price £7.995 for a car that hadn’t been looked after very well , i have complained and complained eventually ask what i was after ? I said my sons deposit but have been told NO
THIS IS JUST A WARNING , IF YOUR BUYING A USED CAR PLEASE PLEASE
CHECK OUT THE MOT HISTORY ONLINE BEFORE COMMITTING TO OR PAYING ANY DEPOSIT.
The garage are well aware of my post as i told them I would be posting my experience with them .

Sobering review attempting to cause as much disgrace to a business as possible....but reasonable people know there's always two sides to a contentious review.
If the Salesman didn't agree to you 'immediately' noticing the front worn discs why did you proceed to purchase the vehicle, complete our order paperwork & leave a deposit. As explained in the letter you received our terms & conditions of sale are scrutinized & approved by Trading Standards i.e. they are legal & binding.
People who don't get their own way often need to withdrawn from a sale due to 'circumstances beyond their control'.
Thankfully we've managed to sell almost 30,000 cars over the last 50 years successfully with lots of happy repeat customers.

Rang them over a week ago to book car…

Rang them over a week ago to book car in for work that needed doing the lady said some one will call me back that was over a week ago this is the second time this has happened to me with this place avoid the attitude is absolutely awful whats worse chris you never spoke to my wife and i never needed a cambelt i needed to book in for a service the girl took my call she was in a rush took my details said someone will call you bk soon never had a call not the first time seems you guys dont respect and appreciate customers

A massive thank you for a job well done…

A massive thank you for a job well done with brilliant customer service. My car was sorted, the mechanics went above and beyond fixing a puncture once the warning system failure was fixed. A special thank you to Jo and the young lady front of house as I had my 13 month old, just walking grandson with me. They both entertained him for me, Jo even walking out with my car keys so I could just put the car seat straight into my car from the curtesy car. You always go the extra mile at Derek Slacks, Middlesbrough and it is really appreciated. I recommend your dealership to everyone because of this. Nothing is too much trouble, you are honest with expectations, letting the customer know exactly what must be done, what you recommend, plus extras if wanted. I have dealt with other main dealers in Middlesbrough & Northallerton, etc. You are the best, welcoming, professional and just brilliant at what you do. Been with you 20 years now, here’s to the next 20!

V sharp sales practice

Always get car inspection before picking up, ie the day you pick up. They will keep putting back pickup. Cars stored around back get covered in grit and stones, see map, windscreen damage.

As you haven't provided any details regarding a purchase its hard for us to comment; we don't use sharp sales practices & don't make a habit of pushing back delivery dates unless we are waiting for a part or some other factor beyond our control. We would always expect a customer to reinspect a vehicle on handover, it goes without saying with any major purchase. Yes all our sold cars & brand new stock is stored around the back in an onsite compound as once a car is sold we'll have another to go on the forecourt in its place. We sell new cars & used ones up to 8 years old, clearly new ones are perfect & the used ones have imperfections commensurate with their age but our standards are transparently explained on our website so customers can view them before they even visit; https://www.derekslackmotors.co.uk/contents/approved-used-skodas

Buyers Regret

I bought a Skoda superb from them and boy buyers regret.
Told at negotiating the deal that the water pump and cam belt would be replaced and we agreed a £150 fee , day before pick up we were told hey great you don’t need the cam belt and pump changing, it’s too early so £150 saved!! Err ok when does it need changing, Oh around October time ( this is in May 23) and how much is it? around £600! No that’s not the terms of the deal, to give them their due they were aware they were in breach of contract and completed the work. Can’t help feeling like it was an attempted con.
June arrives and the infotainment and SOS system dies, taken to another closer dealer about this known fault and told software updates not covered under warranty, had the car 4 weeks at this stage, luckily the other dealer did something!
Now twice in the last 4 weeks the car engine management light has come on, the car entered limp home mode, advised to restart the car and monitor first time ( I will ignore this advice in future ) on the second occasion it’s going in but to another dealer but they can’t do it until Thursday and have no hire cars, at least though they can be contacted unlike service at Derek Slack, numerous phone calls and still no one to talk to, leave a message they say, we’ll I’ve done that before with Derek slack to finally be called late around 1700 by which time the other dealer had “ resolved” the infotainment issue under warranty! The aftercare and service are just terrible and I would not recommend this dealer to anyone
Update received a call back at 1247 explained the problem, to be told they ( Derek Slack) can’t get it in this week and can’t do a hire car until Monday so once again a dealer I didn’t buy it from has to step in the save the day.
Totally useless !!

Regarding the reply,
I stated in my review that you did honour your obligations which I believe was fair to you, Also you are incorrect the cam belt according to Skoda is to be replaced at 5 yrs !! Which is why it was brought up in the pre sale, Your sales agent told us that.
it was another dealer that advised monitoring the engine management light, quite simply because your service department are NEVER available anytime I have ever called, fortunately other dealers seem to answer.
It’s the aftersales that is shocking, and yes your service department called me, after I had emailed the sales manager informing him of my difficulties getting in touch with service. However, you couldn’t get the car in this week and couldn’t provide a hire car until Monday, however again, the other dealer can get me in on Thursday.
So I say again
Totally useless !!
You clearly don’t know how to respond to criticism, you advised that the cam belt and water pump needed changing, not me! You , your staff! I was informed by your staff it would require changing at 5 yrs or around October time, this is even printed in black and white in the pre sale paperwork, you somehow try to make it look as though I am in the wrong and have completely made this up. I have edited my response, to be fair to you, I pointed out that you honoured your obligation, that it was not you that advised monitoring the engine light, and yet you make reference to my edits like I somehow can’t make my mind up,
Your aftersales is shocking , contacting your service department is ( or has been for me) impossible every time I have tried to and your attempt to try to twist this into a customer problem rather than a dealer problem is really poor. You simply don’t like, and clearly have no clue how to respond to criticism,
People can read the review and make up their own minds.

Hi P Three, thank you for your review & apologies its so negative;
Regarding the cambelt, we have never set out to con you or anyone else for that matter, we explained at the time the cambelt wasn't due & we had made an error which we honored, the cambelt on your vehicle isn't due in October its due at 140,000 miles (your purchase mileage was almost 31,000 miles).
You are correct, Software updates are not covered by the Skoda warranty you received (we don't set the conditions, Skoda do) however we offered to do the updates FOC if you returned the vehicle but as you live in Northumberland (60 miles from Middlesbrough) you chose not to & we arranged as a favor for the dealer in Cramlington to do it for you as he is a friend.
We were not aware the engine management light had come on & it was not us who advised you to restart the car & monitor it, sorry for not having a loan car available but we are glad you have managed to make a booking with another dealer, there's probably another 5 between you & us & your Skoda warranty can be used at any in Europe.
Unfortunately used cars approaching 5 years old even after thorough pre sale preparation do develop faults, we do have the largest choice in the North of England & sometimes what is easy to sort for a local customer becomes difficult when distance is involved, again we are sorry for any inconvenience.
Thank you for the 6th edit of your review, again our apologies for not having a loan car available this week, to be clear your vehicles cambelt is due at 140,000 miles with no recommended time interval.

Brought my second Skoda Kamiq from…

Brought my second Skoda Kamiq from Derek Slacks.As always an excellent experience,no high pressure selling and a fair deal.Yes,I could of trawled the internet and saved a few quid,but I know this garage and have dealt with them for 12 years ,for my lease cars and recently my car purchases.Yeah, it is the sales staff,who sell you a car,but in my mind it is the service reception ladies,technicians and Mark Calvert collecting my car in Whitby,who actually keep me going back to Slacks.Because,of the exceptional aftersales service offered,by Slacks.My car was well prepared for handover and exceptionally clean and John even took the time to set my phone up.Once again,to everyone at Slacks ,thanks for a no hassle experience.

Useless and can’t be arsed

Useless and can’t be arsed!

Looking to get a car on Motability to find Jed at Derek Slack Motors.

What can I say about him apart from he didn’t give a crap! Everything seemed to be an inconvenience even though we explained that it was a choice of 2 cars. Looked at the car we were looking at and asked if we could take it for a test drive to be told come back next week as the car was in delivery mode. He then asked what I drove now and said it will drive the same so don’t need to test drive.

Having driven for the best part of 30 years I know that 2 cars even if they come off same production line won’t be exactly the same not to mention I was looking at a different model.

Due to delivery times I wanted to make an informed decision pretty quickly yet he couldn’t offer this. I will not use Deeek Slack again for this reason

Whilst we appreciate all feedback we'd like to point out that you visited us late last Wednesday, our Motability Specialist is off on Thursdays, we offered you an appointment on Saturday morning which would allow us time to get the vehicle out of transport mode which was unsuitable for you.
We understand you had already viewed a Kodiaq at Bristol Street Motors Darlington & possibly reserved a VW at Lookers. You also complained to Skoda about your experience at Pulman's Durham as well as us.

The staff at derek Slack motors deserve this review

Finally a company that does what they say they will. My wife thought she had a fault on her car so i called Derek slacks and stated i had a problem and they booked the car in straight away. When i pulled up the technician came out and asked me what was the fault. I told him and he said Mr Lynn don't worry if you have a fault it's our problem now not yours let us take a look. After a few hours i had the call to return and they explained they had checked everything and it was all fine. Honestly it was great No issue at all the lady on the service desk was so nice as was the technician. I think the comment on the fault was there problem now was so reassuring; I just relaxed and let them take a look. Never had service like this from anywhere else more than happy hence the review.

Purchased a Skoda Octavia VRS

Purchased a Skoda Octavia VRS , and the team at derek slack were class and super helpful. Thomas fletcher and Ian helped me with all the finance and made sure I was comfortable and happy with everything before driving away. Can’t recommend this company enough.

Very sharp sales practice

Very sharp sales practice, they use all the tricks to get the deposit from you, "its the last day of the deal" - still available 2 weeks later. "We support local people so I will do a special discount for you" If you pay a deposit just to get out of there then you have just paid your release fee, you will not get that back even if its less than an hour after you paid!! they say its their admin cost. DO NOT go here
