Parents, beware – serious safeguarding and GDPR concerns

Our school used DE Photo for pupil portraits and sports day photos. Instead of secure, individual logins, the company gave one shared password that allowed every parent to view and potentially download photographs of all children at the school – not just their own. This is a clear breach of privacy and a huge safeguarding risk.

When I raised concerns, the Managing Director (who is also their Data Protection Officer) astonishingly claimed that photographs of children are “unidentifiable data” and therefore not personal data under GDPR. This is completely false – the ICO explicitly states that a photograph of an identifiable child is personal data.

As a parent, I find it unacceptable that a company specialising in school photography would minimise or deny such a basic principle of data protection law, especially where children are involved. If they can get something this fundamental wrong, how can parents trust them with safeguarding or data security?

If your school is considering DE Photo, please think twice. Children’s safety and privacy should come first.

Having already communicated with you via email I won’t go into detail yet again. As you are well aware, the school chose the single password option (we also offered a per child option). With the single password it allowed parents to purchase from several different events at the same school, something you also took advantage of.

But thank you for the purchases you made in June & September and that you enjoy the cherished memories that the photos provide.
