Conclusions and recommendations
Annual energy costs increased for 4 of the 5 residents in this study, the final resident had no pre- data available. This is despite the actual amount of electricity consumed reducing in all but one of the properties. When the residents had storage heaters they consumed around 75% of their energy during Economy 7 hours, this proportion of usage combined with the lower price per kWh meant that despite using more energy they paid less. Most of the systems were set up to operate on a room by room basis, where the temperature always remained the same i.e. 21°C. The system could be set up to operate on a timed basis where the temperature level could be altered however none of the systems had been set up in this manner. There has been a significant trade-off for residents between increased control over their heating and the cost that they pay for their energy.

Recommendations for potential future installations
It is not recommended that this technology is installed in homes of those at risk of fuel poverty, particularly those that require heating throughout the day and night. This technology may be suitable in homes where intermittent heating is required, if the system is set up to reduce temperatures across different periods.
Only properties with a significant amount of thermal insulation should be selected for this system and they should be placed on low single rate tariff for the system to be price competitive against storage heaters. Regular reviews and comparisons of available tariffs should be done to ensure the best deal is selected.
Impact on fuel poverty
The Logicor infrared clear heater system and InLine hot water system are expensive to purchase, install and use. 3 of the residents had costs more than £1,500, 1 of those resident’s costs were c.£1800. Residents did have more control over their heating, they were able to set exact temperatures and times when they wanted to be warm. This was something they were unable to do with the storage heaters. However, despite achieving desired temperatures the trade-off between increased comfort but an increase in cost was too great for some residents.
Additionally, the hot water system was problematic in several properties. The issues cited were related to low water temperature, flow rates and a grit like substance in the water from the hot water tap. 2 of the properties experienced a grit like substance in their hot water. Measures were put in place to attempt to solve these issues, these included replacements of the system and the addition of a filtration system. All residents noted that they were still having some form of issue with their hot water during the final questionnaire. 1 resident cited they do not use the bath and have had to buy a dishwasher because of the grit like substance. Hot water is a significant proportion of energy use within the home whilst also an essential source of residents’ well-being.

Logicor does not state how much its customers can expect to save when installing the Clear Heater system and InLine hot water system, only stating that savings are substantial.8
Economic business case for installation of measures
The cost to purchase and install the Logicor system in this project was £6,266. There is no subsidy such as the feed-in-tariff or renewable heat incentive received for installing using this technology, this means the high upfront cost cannot be offset like it can against an ASHP. All resident costs increased and, in some cases, substantially. Residents are likely to be in a worse financial position after installation, this may affect their ability to purchase other essential goods and services.
The SAP rating also reduced in all the properties, in part this is because the rdSAP does not differentiate the Logicor Clear Heater system from other forms of on peak electric heating. This will have a significant impact as housing associations and private landlords look to increase EPC ratings up to a band C in line with government targets.

Love the system. Really happy with how easy it is to use and how well the hot water system works ... it’s so small I thought it couldn’t possibly give hot water all the time but I never runs out and never gets cold. Our bath is massive and our old system really struggled to give half a bath of hot but now we can run a whole bath and more. We have greater control over heating the house and so greater control over our consumption. We’re saving money and energy that we weren’t before we had the system so we feel good all round.

We had these put in our Ma’s house in Carlisle and she’s lovin them. We’re happy that she’s keeping warm and that its easy enough for her to use herself, which practically means its fool proof. She’s had it coming up a year now and she’s never had a problem. She’s spending less on the electric now too so she’s enjoying that. She can’t do the internet so she asked us to put up a little message to say thanks. So Mary in Carlisle say thanks guys.

Had these put in around eight months ago and they are ace! Installed without fuss (the boys were really nice actually - even if one of them didn’t even drink the tea I made him 😅😅). Had absolutely no problems, the control panel is easy to use. Heats the house - really effective timer system! And our bills are cheaper (and we pay monthly and always have so are able to compare month to month really easily - but once you know you know). I’m very happy with it.

Love our heaters and absolutely love having hot water that never runs out!!! It’s five stars from us :D

I have recently moved into a different flat by my housing association where this system is installed in. All I can say is I’m so glad I have been moved, before I only had a gas fire to heat my flat up and wasn’t a good way as parts of the flat was cold and had damp. Now though I seem to be warm all of the time where ever I am even when the system doesn’t appear to be working 🤷🏽‍♂️. I wish I had moved earlier and I am recommending to everyone that I know!

when we moved here the heaters were here already and we'd never seen anything like these heaters. we'd only had storage heaters and central heating before. we had our son in september 2017 and in our old house he was so poorly ... we think it was the damp but also his mum has basd eczema so it wasnt all the house lol. but his asthma was always so bad and he always had coughs, so we moved. once we got to this house we called logicor and they came out and showed me the control panel and we've been going strong since there... the baby is never poorly anymore but also my wifes eczema is the best its been in years ... it could be the infared or it could just be being away from that damp place... either way we love the heaters. they are really easy to use and you cant have different tempretures in different rooms - which is good for the little one, and its cheaper than what we paying before so an all round win win for me.

I highly rate logicors clear heater system! I made the choice to switch to infrared heating as my old system had broken and I wanted to go for a more efficient alternative. The initial cost was more expensive than I wanted to spend however I thought it would be worth it in the long term. This has proven to be correct as since having it installed I have already seen a reduction in my energy bills and this has happened during winter which is normally when I spend more. Coupled with the fact that hey have a technical support line where I can call with any queries. I highly rate this system and Logicor and would recommend it to anyone who is reading this.

It’s a Great system, it’s very cheap to run and easy to use!! The technical support idea is also a brilliant idea, I had a problem with my system the other day and because I work 9-5 I was unable to take a call during the day, instead they called me back in the evening at a time conventient with me! I have been in my house for 10 years and have saved on my energy bills since they got installed! It’s a thumbs up from me!

We’ve had the heaters for just over two years and we love them. Easy install and really easy to run. The guys were really were friendly and we’ve always had really good customer service on the phone. They look nice, they heat the house, and we’ve saved money.... oh and they are REALLY robust (with two boys and a husband we’ve had a few accidents in the house and not even scratched one). We’ve recommended them loads of times and so yes I’d recommend them.

We've had the heaters and the water system for ages now and wouldn't go back to old central heating. After living here for over 12 years the heating and the boiler needed to be replaced - they had been in place for years before we got here. We wanted to go for infrared heating as we know someone with it and it really impressed us. Placing the order and getting them installed was quick and easy and the logicor team were always happy and helpful. We've been so happy with the heaters, the control panel is simple to use and you think you probably wouldn't use it much but it is actually really helpful that you can set the temperature to be different in any/every room if you like - and we had a constant patch of mould in the corner of the spare bedroom that's completely gone ... so yes would definitely recommend. And the water heater is great too - heats up to temp almost immediately so I never have to run the tap and wait for it to get hot and you never run out of hot water which is a godsend. Five stars from me.

I'vs been very happy with my water system and heaters. Very simple to use , very energy efficient, and very good customer service.

Making the switch to these heaters was a big decision, we’d needed to get the heating sorted for a couple years and we’d kept putting it off because of how complicated (and expensive) it can be. We researched lots of different options but there was so much about infrared heating that really attracted us and eventually we decided to come away from water based central heating. It’s green (we have to look after the planet), it’s instant heat (so there’d be no need to wait for the house to warm up before you feel the difference), easy to install (no plumbing etc, meant no work would need doing round the house), they can help with mould, but most interestingly they can help with allergies (amongst other suggested health benefits). We took the plunge - and needless to say the heaters are fantastic, we are well heated and they were not lying about the instant heat - it is instant! We are never cold and we’ve never had an issue with them yet... but very interestingly for us, the patch of mould we had has gone and my wife’s allergies have improved!! We really weren’t expecting anything other than just an improvement to the heating. So yes, we’d definitely recommend it. We think it’s a great investment!!

We bought a house at auction and it was gutted, no kitchen/bathroom/heating or anything. A friend of ours had had the clear heaters for a while and we had decided we wanted them put in here. Logicor were great and really worked with us regarding the building work and installing the heaters and the water system (honestly this was a much better option than a boiler and everything) and we had to reschedule a few times due to the building work being delayed here and there. They were great and never complained and when it came to it they were quick at putting everything in. 8 months after completing the work our house is our home now and the heaters and the water system are just perfect, no problems and most importantly no regrets. 100 percent would (and do) recommend

Really love my heaters. Me and my husband have our two children and my father in law living with us and we are all wired at different temperatures so we really love being able to set different rooms to different temperatures. Living with boys the odd heater has had a run in with a football/frisbee/flying object and despite being glass - there’s not a mark on any - they really are durable. The control panel is easy to use (we all use it its so simple). We’re really happy with them and would happily recommend.
