Stay Away!

Stay Away!
Order went fine, until items arrived with defects. Store was responsive on email until realising I am requesting a refund, and now radio silence on email or chat. Seems like customer service exists until it's not convenient.

NOTE: whilst I've not received any reply to my multiple emails in the last 10 days, they have responded to many reviews on here - shows you where their priorities are

Just stay away...

Nearly one week since I ordered and it hasn't shipped yet and I haven't been informed of any delays. They don't respond to their chat nor mail (yet). This isn't my first bad experience with them and I've only ordered once before. They used to be under Brut or something and they worked fine but stay away from Universal surplus, their costumer service is nearly non existing.

It’s not an excuse, but during our sales period combined with the free shipping code, we experienced a very high volume of orders, which unfortunately caused delays in fulfillment. Regarding the lack of response to your emails and messages, this is equally regrettable. Our offices were closed for the long weekend around July 14th (a national holiday in France), which impacted our response time. Scam pricing - No communication - Beware

Recently ordered - shipping went super fast, but as the package arrived I noticed they sold me a French work jacket for 69 EUR - that I can easily get for 15 EUR in a work supply store (the exact same jacket). The rest of the ordered clothing felt weird too. Trying to return the clothes - they charge 24 EUR for a return label. Unfortunately they did not send me the return label yet (two days passed) - digital. They also did not respond to my mails yet. Absolutely not satisfied. Beware.

Regarding the French Work Jacket, we completely understand your concern about pricing. That said, we’ve sold this item extensively over time and have never received this type of feedback until now. It’s one of the most iconic French utility jackets — and like many heritage garments, its market value can vary significantly, from around €20 to well over €500 for older, rare versions, depending on condition, age, fabric weight, and sourcing.

It’s possible you’ve seen a visually similar jacket in a workwear store or online at a lower price. However, visual similarity doesn’t necessarily reflect the same level of quality, origin, or historical value — and these are key elements we take into account when curating our pieces. We always aim to align our prices fairly with the market and our competitors. If that weren’t the case, we likely wouldn’t still be here — our customers are well-informed and always have the final say.

As for the other items in your order: these are authentic military surplus pieces. We understand they might not meet everyone’s expectations and that some people unfamiliar with surplus may find them a bit “weird” at first. That’s exactly why we do our best to communicate this clearly through photos and product descriptions — to help customers make informed choices and avoid any misunderstandings.

Like many have mentioned...STAY AWAY

Like many have mentioned, stay away from their made in china junk.

Ordered pants. came in wrong size. I emailed them immediately upon receiving and they were radio-silent. Over 30+ days passed, and i am sharing my experience.
I then reached to them through other method, and they are asking me to pay for return shipping to their location in France....for a mistaken, wrong size they sent me.

This speaks to Universal surplus's sketchy ethos. It's the kind of customer service you would expect from temu china.

Regarding your comment on product origin:

We understand that "Made in China" can carry certain stereotypes. However, it's important to clarify a few things:

First, many military institutions — including those whose surplus items we offer — have sourced production from China for years, due to efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Second, the quality of Chinese-made products usually reflects what clients are asking for. When clients demand extremely low prices, production standards are adjusted accordingly. But Chinese manufacturers are more than capable of delivering high-end, precise, and ethically made goods when the demand and budget align. In fact, some of the most technically advanced products on the market today are made in China.

The belief that "Made in China" equals low quality is a dated generalization. Like in any country, the final result depends on the factory, the specifications, and the standards enforced by the client.

It’s also true that labor conditions can vary — and not just in China. Issues can exist in workshops anywhere in the world, even in Europe. That’s why we choose our partners carefully and value transparency and responsibility above all.

Bad quality and does not seem like vintage

I bought a jacket, listed as a british army jacket from the 1960s. This jacket does not seem to be vintage at all. The quality of the jacket is cheap looking and the label is not the same as shown at the website. The label in this jacket is made of plastic and looks very modern. I do not believe this jacket is from the 1960s. I have clothes from other military outlets from the 1960s and the "feeling" of the fabric is way different. The fabric they used back then was thicker and better quality. The stitches and the fabric of this jacket tells me this was made in the past 10-5 years. The jacket also smells like incense, which makes me think is was cheaply made in an asian factory. I have seen some of the answers Universel Surplus has written to other people who commented on the low quality, where they write that the british military got clothes made from China. I do not believe that this was potentially made in China in the 1960s, it look more like it was made in China in the 2010-2020s.

I also cant send the jacket back, because it was an item on sale. Something that was written in an email I got after I bought the jacket. I wish it had been disclosed on the website before I bought it. I feel like I got scammed. I got the jacket and all, but its nothing like what they advertised for. The price is also crazy compared to the quality. Therefore only the 1 star.

Expensive return process, do not buy unless you're sure the item fits

I brought a pair of pants from the website, the pants in itself were of the desired quality and look, they sadly didn't fit my body shape as they were way to short in length, even though the waist fits perfectly.
The bad review is due to the process of returning the item, they charge a very high return-shipping price, meaning that if I want to return the item, I will end up with less than 50% of the actual price of the pants.

I purchased a pair of RAF Tailor pants…

I purchased a pair of RAF Tailor pants (black) and I love them. They are in my regular rotation of outfits.

I purchased a different pair and they arrived the incorrect size and had a rip in the pants.

I let support know this and they rectified the issue immediately. They quickly responded and said they would send me a new pair right away. Solid customer service!

I am looking forward to receiving the replacement and will also post another review when I get them in the mail.

Regarding the return cost, as mentioned in our Return Policy (located at the bottom of our website), return shipping is the responsibility of the customer—unless the error is on our side. In such cases, we always provide a prepaid return label after being contacted by email.

Returned goods not refunded

I bought a jacket as a Christmas present. They shipped the wrong size and as it was close to Christmas, I chose to return the jacket and request a refund. They have confirmed receipt of the jacket over 14 days ago, but they have not refunded the money.

They refunded the money for the jacket after I told them I had written a review on Trustpilot. They have not refunded the cost of returning the jacket.

Avoid the online shop

Avoid the online shop. They sent me the wrong size. I tried to reach them by mail, Instagram, Shop app, their website chat, and never got any response. Anyway, I’m just amazed how they ignore their customers. If they are incapable to provide a minimum customer service, they shouldn’t run an online shop.

Mediocre quality

During their sale I bought two jackets and a pair of pants. It took three weeks to arrive while I paid for 2-4days shipping, no communication on the delay from customer service. The items are of a laughably poor quality, the fabrics are thin and cheap made in china, the seams are fraying, it is great wearing for a costume at best, none of the items would last a minute in a battle. Charging over a hundred dollar for this feels like a scam.

Quality and Customer service is poor

I purchased a Large French army work jacket during their holiday sale. When I opened the package, it looked like they didn't even bother folding the item. They just tossed it in with no care.

When it arrived, the color was not as blue and vibrant as what their website shows. It was more darker. I figured with lighting and editing the color won't be as exact so I dealt with it.

I then inspected the jacket. The quality was not that great. Threads were hanging out, there were some worn sections. I actually was going to just eat the cost and just exchange for a larger size as the large was a bit too fitted.

Emailed customer service a couple of times and got no response. I typically don't leave reviews, but after doing a quick google search on them I realized there were more customers who had the same experience that i did.

Learn from our mistakes and shop elsewhere.
