Thonk is a shop for DIY modular synthesizers, based in Brighton in the United Kingdom. We have been selling Eurorack and desktop synth kits since 2012, and in that time we have shipped more orders overseas than we have within the UK. We sell full DIY kits, bare PCBs and panels, and thousands of loose components for people building their own designs. Thonk Synth is our own brand, designed, manufactured and kitted entirely in house. We are also the sole manufacturer and worldwide distributor for Music Thing Modular, whose modules are designed by Tom Whitwell in London and built by us here in Brighton. Alongside those we stock kits from makers including Befaco and Erica Synths, and we supply other synth retailers across Europe, North America and beyond. Our customers range from people picking up a soldering iron for the first time to professional module designers buying components in bulk. We try to make the first group as welcome as the second. Several of our best-selling products were designed by people who started out buying beginner kits from us. The part of the job we care most about begins after a parcel arrives. Build documentation and videos get most people to a working module straight away, but sooner or later something does not behave, and we would rather hear about it than have someone give up. We answer build questions, we help debug over email, and we replace faulty parts. We are a small team working Monday to Friday, and replies usually come within a few hours on a working day. What we will not do is make anyone feel foolish for asking. We ship worldwide, with parcels going to the USA, Europe, Canada, Switzerland, Japan and Australia every day, just to name a few. Orders are picked by hand and typically leave us within 12 to 36 hours. We offer 30 day returns on every order, anywhere in the world, which is more than double the UK legal minimum. You can also find us in person at synth shows including Superbooth in Berlin, Machina Bristronica in Bristol and the London Synth and Pedal Expo, where we usually run DIY building workshops.

Thonk is awesome
Professional builder here. I live in the US, and have ordered tens of thousands of dollars of parts and kits from Thonk. Why would I order from a shop thousands of miles away? Because they are the most professional, detail-oriented and friendly folks in the business. I’ve never had as much as a missing nut or washer in the thousands of parts I’ve received! And their bredth of selection is unmatched!

Long live Thonk!
Thonk are an absolute pleasure to deal with. They are extremely reliable and their customer service is second to none. I first purchased from Thonk as a way into the modular and synth DIY worlds without breaking the bank. Now that I build modules for a living they are an essential supplier for my business as well as my hobby. If you are into synth DIY or are thinking about getting into it then I definitely recommend Thonk.

Have been using Thonk for years
Have been using Thonk for years. Needless to say they are the lifeblood of the SDIY scene not only in the UK but for a large part of the world. I think the disruption caused by the pandemic has really brought home just how much hobbyists and businesses alike rely on the outstanding and responsible work that Steve and the rest of the Thonk crew do.
Highly recommended.

Above the Beyond
Thonk went far out of their way twice to help me get the parts I needed in special scenarios which is stellar and gracious. Despite covid issues putting a lot of pressure on their business I was getting very quick email responses - much appreciated and will be back for more soon

Truly fast and friendly customer service!
I got the DFAM-Knob-Upgrade from Thonk the other day. When I opened the package, I noticed that one of the larger knobs was missing its typical round silver plate, must have fallen off before shipping. I informed Thonk Support about the faulty knob, and within just a few days, a replacement knob was on its way – completely free of any charge, of course!
Great customer service, no issues whatsoever, definitely going to shop with Thonk again! Thanks guys!!

Best Synth DIY store on the planet
When you buy from Thonk, it doesn't feel like a purchase from corporation, it's more like meeting up with a fellow enthusiast who has something new and cool to share. They are a foundation pillar of the DIY community, not just in the UK, but around the world.
Prices are incredibly reasonable, and they even include free express delivery on orders above a certain value, even to me here in Los Angeles.
Customer service is ace - they will bend over backwards to do what it takes to make things right.

Been Thonk-ing for ages - brilliant!
Have been using Thonk for years now - the whole team are great. Friendly, knowledgeable and flexible. I’ve got a tendency to ask annoying questions/special orders, and they always sort me out brilliantly. Fantastic company, highly recommended for any synth DIY needs.

I had a very uncanny feeling reading the previous review…
I had a very uncanny feeling reading the previous reviewer's comment, as it so closely mirrors my own experience of this unethical company that i could have written it nearly word for word. I'm glad to say that i wasn't subjected to uncalled-for penalising behaviour from them for anything like the length of time nor degree that the other chap was, and am very sorry to hear he had to endure that, but it was not pleasant to face nevertheless, and certainly stressful to deal with. My case was resolved by a third party at my behest after i made numerous attempts to avoid having to take that course of action, and i have little doubt that had it not been possible to use impartial arbitration may well be ongoing.
Buyer beware - this company thinks it has the right to lay down the law, and they don't like being told otherwise.
