Stunning location
The venue’s location is beautiful, the views across the countryside from the garden are amazing. The decor of the pub itself is wonderful, from the tractor hanging from the ceiling to the crops displayed at the bar, the finishing touches remind you of the ethos of this pub. The standard everywhere is high, the Grand Tour Tent, the Farmer’s Puppy, and every part of the venue is quality. My only disappointment was the Sunday roast, my Yorkshire Pudding was slightly burnt, and my daughter who is allergic to both dairy and gluten, was offered no alternative to the stout gravy, so had to eat a dry roast dinner. Under normal circumstances she would phone ahead to discuss her allergies but there is no option to call. Just be aware, for anyone who is intolerant or like my daughter allergic to dairy/gluten the Sunday roast is not a great choice
The Farmers Dog is an experience not to be missed: one I of the finest ‘pubs’ we have ever been to.
We went on a Sunday and had the roast dinner.
The food was amazing : beautifully cooked and supplied by local farmers.
Everything and everyone were fantastic - table service was executed with cheerfulness and friendliness…and considering how busy this establishment is we consider this to be quite an achievement!
Thank you for helping our farmers and providing this establishment- we appreciate all you are doing.
Lack of loos
Felt like we had turned up to a festival, field full of cars and queues everywhere. That’s TV for you! Burgers were very good, beer less so. My main complaint is lack of female loos… one Portacabin in the woods. Why can’t these places cater for females. I had to use the mens!I’m sure JC can afford more toilets.
Excellent experience
Arrived early to experience the atmosphere and was very pleased to discover live music in the garden, very helpful and pleasant staff served us with a few souvenir purchases, we had booked a table in the restaurant and we were looked after very well by the staff, the food was delicious and hot, the whole experience was great and we will certainly return,
Often busy but delicious
I don't recommend going during public holidays. Way too busy but it's okay on other days! I grew up with this kind of food so it really felt like coming home.. especially nice that it's locally sourced. Very pleased to have eaten here
First and last visit
While on holiday we went to the Farmers Dog, lovely pub, Fantastic scenery, staff were very friendly and very efficient and going in the Grand Tour tent was brilliant but we will not be going back as it’s Card only, which is a shame
Not taking cash surprised us knowing how Jeremy is and that he wants to keep every thing British
Our cash is British but it’s not excepted
As much as I love the ethos …you can’t eat a decent ethos
As much as I love the ethos and employment JC has brought to the area what I experienced is almost identical to the other low rating reviews . Food arrived within two minutes of being ordered … I even cracked the line to the surly waitress ‘ this is faster than McDonalds ‘ - but worse was to come the Gammon was poorly reheated & my guest had ordered the same and left at least half of it .worse was to come with stomach cramps the next day.
So let’s be frank … ignoring all the drama , celeb elements and the swarms of tourists and dusty field of a car park some 15 mins away the truth is Clarkson has put Burford on the map , given spotty teenagers loads of work , boosted the local economy , supported Britains Farmer’s but then allowed some half wit in the kitchens to ruin it all by an average meal at best for a premium. It’s not disastrous but nor is it good . What deserves 5 stars is Clarksons intentions &’the economic benefit to the local community .
Mixed experience.
Me, wife, adult daughter + her dog!
Daughter enjoyed main meal. Wife disappointed by small chicken casserole although taste ok. My gammon steak more like bacon which was hard and difficult to cut. Lovely potato.
Desserts were delicious
Service was quick and efficient.
Very dusty and stoney car park not close to pub. Okay for us but not good for rainy days.
Incredible
We had such a great experience at the Farmers dog tonight and felt compelled to leave a review, especially to shout out one of the staff — Siobhan.
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming, just what you’d want from the pub. The place was clean, the food and drinks were just incredible.
But what really made the night was the service. Siobhan was absolutely fantastic — friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy making sure everyone was having a good time. She gave great recommendations, and managed the busy restaurant like a total pro.
It’s rare to come across service like that, you can tell she takes pride in what she does, and it really made a difference to our night. If you’re going to the Farmers dog , I hope you’re lucky enough to have Siobhan looking after you.
Highly recommended
Well done Jeremy- The Farmer’s dog…
Well done Jeremy- The Farmer’s dog should be a template for all British pubs, it’s what most of us want from a pub - tasty homegrown food and drinks. You’ve done an amazing job and to highlight the plight of British farmers and educate us non farmers will hopefully bring about real change for the farming community; the Government should be hanging its head in shame.
We had a fantastic day out
We had a fantastic day out! The lunch was delicious and very reasonably priced—especially considering everything is homemade and made with locally sourced ingredients. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, which made the whole experience even better. We’re already looking forward to going back soon!
I’ve no idea how people dare leave one…
I’ve no idea how people dare leave one star reviews. You saw the TV show, you know how busy it’s going to be. Don’t go if you don’t want to wait. My wife and I waited patiently, had drinks and food, enjoyed the garden and left. Lovely pub and were proud to help local farmers by eating the food that they grew knowing the government is doing all it can to destroy our famers. 1 star reviewers need to get a life.
A Great Experience
A Great experience! No booking as we just turned up and bought food and drink from The tent. I can’t comment on the pub food but it’s very nice inside! (I was told by a very nice lady at the farm shop that if we’d have popped to the pud they MAY have got us in IF there was a table free it it would have been time limited) but We had already had food and drinks from the Grand Tour tent which were really good. The burger was a little small in my opinion for what it cost but it was tasty. They sell everything you’d probably find at “Diddly Squat Farm shop” inside the GT tent in the “Farm Shop” and you can buy all the Hawkstone you want there also along with fresh meat from the butchers counter.
Obviously you are paying for the experience of it all and in my opinion it’s a day trip to see what Mr Jeremy has achieved and what he is doing for this country. YES things cost a lot more than most people are use to paying as you can read from reviews so please don’t moan as you really shouldn’t go if you check the prices haha
Like us please go and experience if for what it is. buy what you like and just tap your CARD without looking how much it is and ENJOY yourselves!
Unfortunately we didn’t see Mr Jeremy
It was ok
It was ok. I bet it’s an absolute nightmare to run due to the sheer volume of visitors, which is to be expected. Treat it as a tourist attraction as opposed to a pub and you’ll enjoy yourself. Went on a bog standard Thursday and it was pretty busy.
Was pushed to park in the overflow carpark which is £2 to subsidise its usage due to the farmer giving up his field. Strangely there were more than enough spaces on the actual carpark when we walked to the pub.
Managed to get seats in the bar, the beer was nice, if a little pricey. But what do you expect. I didn’t eat much as I’m a Heathen Vegetarian, however did share chips which were very nice. Some of our party had sausage rolls, which they said were very nice but expensive at £6. We saw burgers come out which apparently looked nice but not big for the £14 being charged.
Overall it is what it is. The principal behind it is there but it was always going to turn into a circus given it’s links to a TV show and big celebrity. Lots of fans taking selfies for social media and buying Merchandise with logos on them to tell everyone they’ve visited.
I don’t get all the 1 star reviews, do they really think it was going to be perfect given its background? If the hysteria surrounding it ever goes away it could be a cracking place. Until then, go prepared for crowds, queues, hysteria, and social media hungry individuals and see how you get on.
Violent racist
There was a violent, woman hating racist behind the bar.
lovely food great service
went to the farmers dog today for a meal, i had the steak pie and the wife had the ceaser salad. the food was delicious great service from the staff we will be returning very soon. i also met Alan the builder and Gerald who where lovely and friendly.
Customer experience dreadful
Tried to go but on checking lunch for 2 was 1 hour 15 minutes allowed. Why drive for 90 minutes to go to a fast food restaurant and food may be great but at those prices not worth the effort. JC needs to address the question of "customer experience " as it's shocking right now.
food at farmers dog…
Sun was out so staff decided that the terrace would only be open to booked dining. Having booked on line some 3 weeks ago and driven 153 miles one way I thought we were safe, but no trace of booking and treated as a walk in with no table available. Food came within 3 minutes of order so cannot have been anything but microwaved and was not worth travelling for even if you lived next door
Shocking and disappointing!
Shocking and disappointing!! Dined here for lunch today. Overcrowded and overpriced. JC you should be ashamed of this establishment, you have ruined what potentially could be a lovely country pub. The food is far less than adequate for what you are charging. I had the lamb stew which to be fair the lamb was lovely but the vegetables in it quite obviously had not been stewed and were not even cooked properly. The two dumplings had also been added after the cooking process. My husband had the steak pie which he said at best was ok - not much meat in it and the gravy wasn’t particularly tasty. I sent mine back - which I might add I never do. I hate wasting food. The waitress replaced this with a Caesar salad - the croutons were nice but the crispy chicken breast in it was well over cooked - I’ve had much better at MacDonalds. If there was a plus point the Hawkestone Hedgerow was really good. It’s a shame to be making a review like this, we were so looking forward to going but on a scale of 1 to 3 out of the three Top Gear presenters Jeremy you are coming last and Richard Hammond hasn’t even got a pub. It feels like you are taking advantage of your fame and don’t really care about the experience you are providing - just remember there are a lot of people who adore you and quite honestly you are taking the mick! Oh and by the way start with getting a decent chef. Would definitely not go back there again unless the reviews get better but would definitely go back to James May’s pub The Royal Oak, Swallowcliffe, Salisbury.
