Standard Bank - what a disappointment you have become!!

I have been with Standard Bank for 37 years. I never had ANY problems at all, except for the past 2 years when all my faith in Standard Bank simply vanished. 1). My credit card had to be replaced 6 times! I realise that this may be my own fault but I sometimes suspected that someone within SB was using my card, base on the transactions which I was not responsible for. 2). Once, when my credit card was compromised, I requested for my entire profile to be put on hold while investigating. Instead, they deleted my entire profile and I lost all my accounts, as well as money which were in some accounts. When I enquired, they said that I should provide them with the account numbers (which I did not have). I requested that they do a search on my id number which is certainly the unique identifier, but they said they cant do that. 3). I received my credit card statement in February and saw transactions which was not performed by my. I followed this up with them - their reply was that there was a mix up with the credit card statement and sent me a new statement. All of these indicate serious IT problems at Standard Bank which should be addressed as a matter of urgency. I requested about a year ago that my "personal banker", Ms Nompumulelo Mkize, be replaced but this has been totally ignored. It feels like Standard Bank has become a government department - just as useless!!!

Useless Bank

Once again a simple request cannot be fulfilled, requested a bond statement from the chat function but was advised to send a email to another deparment, after being advised the return message on the email to contact the chat function.

Cindy from Garden Route Mall in George. Helps me with my investmenst. A view times Already. She is always very friendly and helps me a lot. Thats why I do stay with Standard Bank. Their service is very good and they are helpfull and friendly . That counts alot.

Standard Bank York Street George

The following people assisted me very well at your George Branch in York Street.

Lesley-Ann Lass. She could not assist me write away and gentle apologizes and assure me that she will be with me shortly. I felt welcome and seen. I could see that she was busy with another customer. My cell phones battery was flat and she did not mind to put my phone on charge while I was waiting to be served.

Danvor Muller who assisted a customer on the self help centre looked up and listened to my request. He first apologized the client and the client agreed that it was no problem at all. Danvor is always helpful. When I see him in the bank I always feel home.

Tilana Sealie was serving me and she mentioned that I can make direct contact with my banker. She gave me advice on how to handle my overdraft. After she saw my profile she said I should not follow the initial advice because I do have a banker. The banker can do what I am requesting over the phone. She was friendly and patiently answered all my questions.

I love the service of Standard Bank Yorkstreet in George.

They are the BEST.

Standard Bank locked in bureaucracies and AI customer service

I don't understand how this bank can survive with such poor customers service, this would happen in Europe! It's like dealing with a BBC and from the 70s overloaded with bureaucracy modern version!
Emails communication seems I communicating with limtited AI record.
This review ask a experience date but this has been ongoing, it took me 4 months to open account with over 7 levels of checks most amazing each check ask me the exact questions, like if they didn't trust the previous level! 3 years of mostly negative experiences.
Very sad, not a happy customer

Standard Bank has become super pathetic…

Standard Bank has become super pathetic !! I banked with Standard Bank for more than 50 years !! All my companies & Trust accounts were also with Standard Bank. I recently close about 48 accounts and moved them to a different bank. Standard Bank has become a dinosaur - its systems are old, cumbersome and outdated & their staff are totally incompetent !!

Standard bank is the worst bank ever

Standard bank is the worst bank ever, I took a" Car" financial loan not "insurance" only a car ,now the car crashed and I wanna pay them the remaining balance cash so they can close the account. I found out from their branch in Town that I can only send them an email so they can they can tell me how much I need to pay to close the account. I can't call them or physical go to them I should just send them an email and now its been 5 days since I sent them the email and they haven't responded I mean WTF its 2026 why the f can't I call them and ask for my remaining balance and pay it ? We'll I have the answer they are a SCAM

Genuinely a cash grab.

My experience felt very sales-driven. After signing agreements for things like loans and payment plans, communication became more difficult. When I later needed support, responses were slow and assistance was limited, regardless of how long I had been a client.

To be scammed or not...

I wish to call out the excellent Fraud department service. Let me regail you with with my hours long experience. Last night I logged into my Phone App - checked everything - all is fine. Lunch time the next day I try to log on to pay a bill and it says the service is unavailable. Shortly after this - minutes - my phone rings - person from Std Bank fraud department. He said that there were attempted transactions being made in Durban from my Access/Checking account. (Afterwards I learned this is DIGITAL FRAUD - and is dependent on inside information. So from my understanding, this is how it worked: Nameless person in Durban downloads the STD Bank app on their phone - creates a profile with THEIR personal information and then (a bit vague on exact details here), my account is linked to their profile. Now my Check account exists with TWO profiles. But I cannot see any of the transactions that they do when I log on to my profile. Assistance from agent: (and again, stress levels through the roof, I will recall as carefully as I can). He suggests I need to remove all my funds from my existing accounts - checking, savings and credit card - into my main account which is the checking account. The process he is following is to safeguard my money - remove it from Standard Bank - so he says to add a beneficiary called MN at Capitec and to proceed to transfer ALL my funds to Capitec. At this point I am VERY uncomfortable. I am receiving Fraud warning messages on my cell phone as I am working with the Fraud agent. My accounts become inaccessible before I can transfer money. So agent says I need to go to bank and have them unlock my accounts without telling them that it is for security reasons based on suspicion of Fraud because they suspect the information was released an employee from the branch itself. WHO CAN YOU TRUST? There is urgency, there is the don't tell anyone what's going on, etc. So I went to the bank, but called the Fraud department from there and had them check my profile - they only saw one profile with the money as I had most recently moved it to the checking account. I had them lock that profile as well. So now I will be at the bank at 9am to create a new profile and continue with the saga. I was just very sorry that I did not think of transferring the money to one of family member's accounts. Then it is out but still accessible by me. So was this a scam or a legitimate follow-up by Standard Bank Fraud to help me avoid losing my money?

Lack of urgency or care to resolve issue

This 1 star reflects a serious issue regarding overseas funds sent to a Standard Bank account on 8 December 2025. As of 6 January 2026, the funds have still not been located or credited, despite multiple follow-ups.

The lack of urgency and progress from client services is extremely concerning. These funds are essential for my mother’s basic living needs, including medical aid payments, water and electricity accounts, and food. Due to this ongoing delay, she is now experiencing financial distress and stress.

Given the length of time that has passed - nearly a full month - this matter should have been resolved or, at the very least, clearly explained. To date, there has been no satisfactory update, timeline, or indication of priority handling.

Poor service and stilling my money

The treatment they gave me is of poor services. They are like exstochinist. They took money R460 every month for the past three years from my account for private banking facilities which one of its benefits is that of a private banker. I never received that treatment. I wrote a complaint to CEO of Standard Bank to complaint that I am not getting a service that I am paying. All these was in vain. I canselled private banking facilities and deduction to my surprise they deduct on the 31 Dec of which has never happened. I am tired of this bank and it should not be called Standard Bank because is cheating people like my self who is now on pension.
