I wouldn’t even give this Company a 1 star rating. Atrocious service and extortionate standing charges.. if you are a business customer with multiple meters, AVOID AVOID!

Despite the numerous negative reviews, I wanted to share some improvements I’ve seen with SSE. I remember trying to get a plan for my small business about a year ago but had troubles understanding their website to know which plans are meant for me. I had called customer service, which was a terribly long wait with no tangible result. Frustrated as I was, I decided to move on to another supplier.
I had recently opened a new site and decided to check them out again, and I can see a new refreshed design for their tariff page which clearly explained the best plans for my business. I also tried reaching them and the wait time was fair and I got treated better by the team.
There’s still a lot of improvements needed regarding billing and customer service but I can tell they’re working on it.

Terrible experience of emails ignored. Called them and nothing happens that they say is going to happen.
Had I seen the reviews here I would have not moved and please do not use this company.
The smart meter has not been working since 2014! Though we have a 7 month break with them. Despite Emails and a formal email of complaint there has been no feedback.
Im left with continually chasing them just for them to abide by the law. The good news is that from this month the law comes in that compensation is due so I will be pursing that.

I feel like my small business has been extorted by SSE. We were a customer of theirs for a long time. I submitted meter readings on time every month but they stopped sending invoices for many months. I phoned on several occasions with meter readings, asking them to send invoices and they still didn't send an invoice.... until around 10 months in to this an invoice landed in the post for approx £10,000. There is no way we used that much electricity as we are now spending around £150 per month with Scottish power who are excellent. Faced with the thoughts of trying to sue a massive corporation I decided to just pay and move on with life which was a massive blow to our small business. Stay away from this horrendous company!!

SSE Energy refused to let me open a new contracts solely because I have an old account with a balance — even though that balance is on a formal repayment plan, paid by Direct Debit, and completely up to date. I have not missed a single payment.
Despite paying responsibly, I was still blocked with no flexibility and no fair consideration. This feels punitive and shows a complete lack of respect for customers who are actively resolving their debts.
This is unacceptable customer treatment and I will be escalating the matter to the Energy Ombudsman.
If you value fair treatment and reasonable customer service, stay away from SSE Energy.

Your waiting music is absolutely awful, it is so pitchy and screechy. After waiting on hold for 45 mins I was well and truly fed up with the awful music which was making me feel sick with a head ache.
Wait times need some serious attention as they’re not customer friendly.

SSE use a contractor to sort out complaints. What are the managers doing other than sitting on a nice fat salary and hosting evening events with customers money while customers get little support. I am talking a business account here. 3 years challenging bills and still no further on. Even a manager couldn't sort out the mess SSE have made. Unbelievably incompetent Company. To all businesses out there AVOID THIS COMPANY. We are block managers and if we inherit a block with SSE as the supplier we move away immediately. Do not waste your time on this terrible rip off of a company

I used sse for my business and when I left the property I informed them that I was leaving and asked for a final bill and gave them my new details. Sse told me that as my bills were estimated, if there was anything owed, they would sent my a final bill
The morons only went and sent their bills to an empty building and then sent debt recovery.
Incompetent staff that can't follow simple instruction.

Every month I have to make calls to sort out billing issues and to complain that on line meter readings cannot be submitted. We have a smart meter which they say works but it fails to notify the billing system which comers up with ridiculous estimates as much as 10,000 bigger than the real figure. Al;though they promise to deal with it, it never gets fixed. Result are contract ends this month and we are leaving.

They are beyond useless and they have really annoying 'on hold' music too. Trust me you'll get used to this same repeated section of classical music should you need to ring them.
I'm now 18 months into an issue with them claiming I owe nearly £ 5,000 in back electricity (despite only having had the property under my usage period for a few months with all the appliances turned off) and still there's no end in sight.
They're even worse than British Gas (and that takes some doing).

Despite some of the negative reviews, I’ve personally had a great experience with SSE. The service I received was excellent, especially when I needed to close my account early due to moving back home. The process was smooth and stress-free, and they were kind enough to let me wait until my next pay date to settle my final bill in full.
A special thank you to Peter for the great service today, and to Kevin for his excellent support when I enquired about my welcome-back offer — he was kind enough to send it through without any hassle. Overall, really positive and helpful customer service.

We have been having an awful time with SSE for a couple of years and this is compounded by the recent bereavement of my friend who was the customer (he was trying to deal with them, with significant stress to himself).
SSE supply electricity to an industrial unit which originally had 2 electricity meters however 1 of these was removed 2.5 years ago. This did not stop SSE continuing to take money via DD and so in the end my friend stopped the DD but this forced him onto a Pay as You Go arrangement - substantially more expensive than a contract. In the end, he went to the Ombudsman who found in his favour (given this meter did not exist!!!) and SSE raised a complaint to handle this internally and to backdate the electricity costs that he should have been paying on contract vis a vis the more expensive arrangement….one day soon after he received 18 statements - a mix of usage and credit notes but it was impossible to make sense of. He was constantly in contact with SSE trying to work out what the situation was but with no success. Then the debt collection letters and emails started to arrive - he was being chased for several hundreds of pounds, even though SSE will owe him money…..and then he died suddenly at the beginning of November 2025.
Unfortunately even though we have been in contact to let SSE know (long phone call, several emails) and to ask for the actions as per the Ombudsman ruling to be implemented and to cease the debt collection harassment, SSE are “unable” to stop the debt collection letters and so his widow is now receiving these. Also, having notified SSE 2.5 weeks ago of the bereavement and the mess that SSE has created, it appears that this case has not yet even been assigned to somebody to take some action. This is causing significantly more stress in an already very difficult time and it appears that SSE are wholly unresponsive and don’t seem to care about an Ombudsman ruling or putting something right which has been found to be incorrect. How do we escalate this? We are at our wits end.

I am banging my head against a brick wall with the following!
My father got killed in a car crash (along with his partner and our cousin) 15th August 2024 and after the initial shock and then time it took to find a will, we finally instructed solicitors who took over his affairs as he owned and ran 2 HMO properties. Our solicitors contacted all companies he dealt with in November 2024 that they would taking over the estate on our behalf and be making payments going forward and there was a bill from SSE who were also contacted.
I was checking my dads emails frequently and was surprised when there was an email from debt recovery agency asking for payment for SSE and I rang the company and spoke to a very helpful gentleman and explained the situation and that our solicitors had been in touch with SSE and he said to leave with him. That was last contact I had with the first company.
Months later, I checked dad’s emails and found a new debt recovery agency, again for SSE with more money added on and again I rang and spoke to a helpful lady who I explained the situation again, she said leave with her and again, was last I heard of them.
Months down the line I got in touch with solicitors to ask what update was and she then got on and chased SSE and came back that she had had a very long telephone call with them (at significant cost to us) and was no further forward.
I then decided to take over again and call them myself which resulted in a circular call for over half an hour and me begging to just pay the outstanding amount that was due on the original invoice as we just want the matter closed and to be able to part ways with our solicitors as this is the only outstanding issue we have.
I was told that I could only pay the debt recovery service and not be able to pay direct myself of the original outstanding debt. I did point out that it was due to their incompetence that we had been directed to a debt recovery agency as they had not responded to our solicitor in November 2024 when they were first contacted and I wouldn’t be paying the extra fees incurred to the agencies and I just want to pay over the phone.
End result was, when I asked to speak to someone senior as this is taking such a toll on my mental health with something that should have been sorted over 12 months ago, the manager was apparently just going into a meeting and I was promised a call back at 10:30. I await the call.

I would like this to be past on to the relevant manager. I am a Chairperson of a local club. I dealt with many of your colleagues who were no help at all after a large payment was taken out of our account and we were going to close the club. I finally got to speak to a gentleman by the name of James Marshall from the Complex Complaints Management team. I would like this to be passed on to the relevant manager because James was an amazing help to us and can't thank him enough. Your really need to look after people like him as he is amazing. I would also suggest you train some of your other colleagues up as they nearly closed our club. Thanks James.

I can't begin to put into words how awful this company is. This company have cost our charity thousands and thousands of pounds because of their incompetence. I will never use this company again and they need investigating. Getting away with all sorts and THE WORST customer service.

31mins so far waiting for a copy bill which has not been sent by SSE from June to September, which needs payment. Their customer service team appear to be struggling to provide from their own systems. Seems that training and a reasonable timeframe is particularly lacking, the individual has gone to seek help from a manager. This should be a simple 2 minute process!

Poor company policies.
Smart meter appointments rearranged at the last minute and no-attendance for rearranged appointments.
Not able to re-bill accounts correctly for estimated meter readings.
No answer to emails through to helpdesk.
No response to official complaints.
Would strongly avoid and move away from SSE asap.

Disgusting company, charged approx £2000 for 500 units of electricity, they are making it impossible to change to another supplier , charge what they like, rude telephone staff who are almost impossible to reach, with very poor english,
very very very disappointed , have been trying for a month to change to another company but SSE keep blocking it saying i am in contract for two more years when in fact i have been well over a year out of contract, avoid at all costs !
