Complaint Regarding Unprofessionalism
Complaint Regarding Unprofessionalism 2023 BMW 220i M Sport Coupe
I am writing to formally log a serious complaint regarding the deeply unprofessional, deceptive, and discriminatory sales tactics experienced by my partner and myself when attempting to purchase the above-referenced vehicle currently advertised on your website and Auto Trader.
Following concerning feedback regarding your business practices, we decided to conduct a test. The results have exposed a systematic and unacceptable practice of misleading consumers, rejecting cash buyers in favor of finance arrangements, and engaging in misleading advertising regarding the vehicle's specification which is shown clearly in the images.
The sequence of events unfolded as follows:
Discrimination Against Cash Buyers: My partner submitted an enquiry expressing interest in purchasing the vehicle outright as a cash buyer. Shortly after, she received an email stating that the vehicle was no longer available because another buyer was financing it. Despite this claim, the vehicle remained actively listed for sale on both Auto Trader and your own company website.
Manufactured Availability for Finance Customers: On the exact same day, I submitted an enquiry for the very same vehicle. However, I explicitly stated that I intended to purchase the car using finance. Shortly after submitting my enquiry, I received an email from your sales team confirming that the vehicle was available and proactively asking whether I preferred PCP or HP options. Meanwhile, my partner was explicitly told the car was sold. This confirms that your dealership is intentionally turning away cash buyers to prioritize finance deals where you stand to make higher commission, while falsely claiming the vehicle is off the market.
Misleading Advertising and Hidden Charges (Bait-and-Switch): After being told the car was available to me, I replied stating I would proceed via Hire Purchase (HP) with a deposit. In response, I was informed that the red brake calipers visible on the car in all of your promotional images are not actually included in the advertised price, but will instead incur an additional add-on charge of £380. Displaying a vehicle with specific cosmetic features in your advertisements can be misleading.
All emails have been logged and the above true facts are proven to be true - regardless of the excuses and lies you may present.

We take allegations of this nature seriously. However, despite previously asking you to provide your name and the contact details used for your enquiries so that we could identify the correspondence and properly investigate your concerns, we have still been unable to identify you from the details provided.
For clarity, we do not operate a policy of refusing cash purchases or prioritising finance customers. The vehicle in question was under offer and progressing through a business finance application, which can take longer to complete. During this period, we continued to receive enquiries from other interested customers.
We would also clarify that the red brake caliper painting was clearly identified in the vehicle advertisement as an optional enhancement, with the additional cost always stated before placing a reservation fee as part of our sales process. The advert also included imagery highlighting this as an optional feature.
If you are genuinely interested in purchasing a vehicle from us, we are more than happy to assist you, whether you are purchasing with cash or finance. We have already invited you to contact us directly with your details so that we can identify your enquiries, review the correspondence and address your concerns properly.
We remain happy to assist and would welcome the opportunity to resolve any genuine concerns directly. We will also cooperate fully with any formal enquiry from Auto Trader, the finance provider or any relevant regulatory body.

Recently bought a BMW 1 series from s James, my experience was nothing less than superb, especially Natalie, the car is immaculate in every way, and looks superb, as well as the added extras I had. I dealt with Natalie throughout my whole experience and nothing was too much, she responded to any questions I had via email within 10 minutes, even on her days off. I’ve now bought my last three cars from S James Prestige, and every single one has been brilliant. The cars have all been exactly as described, reliable, and great value for money.
What really stands out, though, is the customer service. The team are friendly, helpful and genuinely care about their customers. There’s no rubbish or pushy sales talk with this place — just an honest and straightforward service.
I’ve had some terrible experiences with other car dealers in the past, so finding a dealership I can actually trust is a breath of fresh air. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend S James Prestige to anyone looking for a quality car from a dealer you can trust.

Very disappointing
Very disappointing. After a few months of searching for a new car, I've been impressed by the images I've seen from this company of various stock.. however different story when you contact them to purchase. I contacted them about a 8 series I was interested in. After I said I was looking to pay in cash I didn't get any response, even after chasing the sales associate who I was in touch with. Seems like they want to make money from people financing their stock. Another red flag was when they told me that a second 8 series I was interested in was no longer available - even though the ad is still online 2 months later - it just seems they want to have nice professional images of cars to lure customers in.
A real shame.

Thank you for your further feedback. We are disappointed to see this review posted again, particularly as the same concerns were raised previously and have already been addressed with you.
We would, however, like to clarify the points raised once more.
We absolutely do not prioritise customers based on whether they choose to purchase with cash or finance. We are more than happy to sell our vehicles to cash buyers, and the suggestion that we ignore or deprioritise customers because they do not require finance is simply not true.
Our cars can sell incredibly quickly, particularly sought-after models such as the BMW 8 Series. We have a large database of customers waiting for specific vehicles, meaning cars can sometimes be reserved very shortly after being advertised. Where a customer is progressing with a finance application, the vehicle is held for them while the application is concluded. This is not about favouring finance customers; it is simply part of the process when a purchase is already progressing.
Regarding the second 8 Series you mention, vehicles can remain visible on our website or third-party advertising platforms after being reserved, sold or removed from active stock. Updates across these platforms are not always immediate, which can unfortunately create confusion around availability. This does not mean that the vehicle is being deliberately advertised to lure customers into purchasing something else.
We also strongly reject the suggestion that we use professional photography to mislead customers. We use professional photography to ensure our vehicles are accurately and attractively represented online, allowing customers to get a clear idea of the cars before making an enquiry or visiting us. There is certainly no strategy of using attractive imagery to deliberately mislead potential customers.
Our business model is to price our vehicles as competitively as possible within the market, which is one of the reasons they can sell so quickly. There is no benefit to us in deliberately misleading potential customers, and we are disappointed that this has been suggested.
We appreciate that you were disappointed that the vehicles you were interested in were no longer available, and we are sorry that your experience left you frustrated. However, we feel it is important to correct the suggestion that S James Prestige deliberately favours finance customers or uses misleading tactics to generate sales, as this does not reflect how our business operates.
As mentioned in our response previously, if you are still looking for an 8 Series, we remain more than happy to discuss any suitable vehicles we currently have available and assist you in finding the right car.
