I ended up stuck on the hard shoulder with some lane closures in place, A VERY kind highways officer was incredible, kind and patient coming up with a solution to get me back safely on the motorway, and I was nervous.. Thank you so much officer 7644

My son had a crash on the m4 tonight and there was an highways officer turned up and calmed him down delt with the situation very professionaly

Road closures in Nottingham with clueless diversions. Contractors sat in their vans constantly when there supposed to be working on repairs prolonging the repairs and costing the tax payers more money

Damaged tyre and wheel alignment issues caused by a repair that had deteriorated. The repair was a strip of tarmac that had exposed the sharp edges of the road surface and was the width of the motorway lane. Unavoidable on a 4 lane motorway at rush hour.
Provided documentation and photos of the damage and the repair bills to correct the damage.
I followed the procedure even though I knew it was futile.
Damages roadsurface remained for almost another 2 months.
Claim ultimately rejected because there is legislation protecting these entities from paying claims. They have to be seen as pretending to take claims seriously but the wording of their letters is clear that they can't fix everything immediately. That's fine, but the issue remains that your motorway and terrible repair was the cause. Cost me nearly £300 for a new tyre and to correct the wheel alignment.

A bottom feeding department run by tax payers money, who's job it is to maintain the motorway road surface. Useless and inept.

Absolutely clueless one of the questions must be are you clueless answer yes and you’ve got the Motorway closed totally unnecessarily causing a lot of problems

Today, I broke down on the m40 with two horses, fortunately there was a hard shoulder but I was terrified for the horses. The second highways agency guy to respond after the first guy left me was Grant and he was reassuring and so helpful. I am so grateful for his help today and prompt assistance. Thanks for everything the highways agency guys do to keep the motorists safe and a big shout out to Grant today you were my saviour.

After an hours drive and nearly at my destination Sheffield Park Garden there was a sign saying road closed. I followed the diversion signs which weren’t taking me towards my destination and then followed signs to where I was heading. Upon reaching Sheffield Park Garden 5 miles extra drive I could see the road was closed after there. So why not say you could get there. Or. Just put road closed where it actually is! Petrols not cheap right now. I wasted 5 miles of extra fuel because of you UNNECESSARILY!

Clueless. Matrix signs left on for hours with the wrong information. Over emphasising on health and safety when it is their job to keep traffic moving. Costing the economy billions every year. They cause traffic jams not alleviate them.

We broke down yesterday on the M25 just past Clackets Services.
A frightening experience.
The emergency telephone was not working so we dialled the other number supplied on the box with our cell phone. Contact was very quick and the team kept in regular contact with us, even checking on us via their cameras. This was very reassuring and they even contacted our recovery people to hurry them up.
Thank you very much for your help, guidance and support.

My dad and I broke down yesterday on the motorway which was incredibly stressful for us, my dad had left the house for the first time in a week as he'd just had a major operation and was coming on a 'short trip out with me' he is also autistic and was due medication for the pain so as you can imagine breaking down was not ideal, as soon as we told National Highways about this they sent someone out to us and within 20 minutes we were met with the lovey Andrew who was nothing short of amazing!

He was chatty, kept my dad entertained and couldn't of done more for us, he spoke with the guys at Westbourne motoring assistance on our behalf so my dad was less stressed, he tried to understand my dad and his needs and made him feel seen and understood, he organised us to sit in the vehicle safely as he could see that my dad was starting to feel lightheaded, he reassured me emotionally when he could see I was stressed and overall just went above and beyond for us to make sure we were looked after.

Mr Nick Harris has gone no surprise now Nick Joyce needs sacking you run a bunch of children to do a man's job to make our roads safe and monitor our roads and stop leaving stranded motorists waiting hours for assistance when your kids are supposed to monitor the cameras plus if over head cameras are set to a speed then the next set of cameras are set to a different speed in some cases faster than the previous then they slow you down again on thr next set are they trying to catch you out its dangerous if we are slowed down then keep that way for the length of the hazard.
So when these muppets stop playing around and watch our roads as you are supposed to maybe our roads will be safe.
But saying that close this company down and police properly like the old days.

ian came to our rescue when we broke down with a tyre that had come off the wheel on the A56 at about 3 30 today he kept my husband safe while he changed the wheel . it was very scary with fast traffic he was just so happy to help us and couldnt of managed without him so well done ian and the national highway team/ also a policeman from lancashire police also assisted THANKS

I would like to give a big thanks to a high way officer by the name of Rakeem he’s a fantastic guy friendly amazing respect and attitude towards any situation or circumstance people like him show you that no matter what colour what background or route you have we are all human me being British but with routes that go back to Pakistan I understand being coloured we have some certain individuals who make us look bad like all races do but Rakeem made me so proud of how he is welcoming and supportive lovely guy

I have just watched the most heartwarming video from one of your members of staff rakeem his honestly amazing at his job and everyone should be so grateful for him

We had a blow out on the M40 yesterday and found it very stressful with the traffic so close even though we had moved away from the car. We called the AA and while waiting two traffic officers(9433-Callum and 9083 Kelly) stopped to help us and make source we were ok. They gave us rain ponchos too. They phoned the AA again for us to give a more accurate position of our car. The AA were fantastic too and came within the hour to replace the tyre with a temporary one and followed us to a garage 25 mins away where we had it replaced. The traffic officers had meanwhile phoned us back to check we had been helped. All in all very happy with all the support we had in a difficult situation. Many thanks

Last night I was bringing my son home from hospital with my husband and a fuse blew that took the lights from the car . We managed to stop on the hard shoulder just past J21 M5. The highway patrol vehicle stopped and escorted us to a safer place and helped above and beyond staying over an hour later than his shift speaking to RAC to prioritise our recovery due to my son’s condition.
Lewis you are an exceptional young man and a real asset to the team of the Highway Patrol Service. Thank you again for your help and concern.

I’m sharing this based on my direct experience working as a contractor on roadworks managed by National Highways.

After completing work on a section of road, I left the site in my vehicle. Due to a clear lack of signage indicating that roadworks were still ongoing, I reasonably believed the works had ended. However, around 1–2 miles further ahead, I noticed flashing beacons and immediately realised the restriction was still in place. I slowed down and adjusted my driving accordingly.

Shortly after, I was stopped by a member of National Highways staff. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the individual was extremely aggressive — shouting, speaking in a disrespectful tone, and refusing to listen to a calm explanation. I made it clear this was a genuine mistake caused by poor signage, but the response remained hostile and completely disproportionate.

What followed was even more concerning: I was later informed that I had been banned from working on National Highways projects for life. For a single, non-deliberate incident — one influenced by inadequate road signage — this feels excessive and unjust.

Professionalism, communication, and fair judgment should be standard, especially from those managing public infrastructure and contractor relations. Based on this experience, there appears to be a serious lack of all three.

After reading other reviews, I can see this may not be an isolated case. That is worrying.

Why bother putting a closing date on recruitment advert and then close it a day early.
Useless rubbish company.

I had the unfortunate and scary experience of my car breaking down on the motorway (m27) which is currently subject to ongoing "smart" motorway road works. There was a line on tightly packed cones to my left, no hard shoulder and I was unable to pull over as this would have sent cones across the motorway and into the cars following at speed behind me. I applied my hazard lights and looked for a safe place to pull over. At this time, I had about 10 cars behind me so I could not stop dead as I would have caused a pile up. I managed to get off the motorway, where I could safely come to a stop. All this took less than 30 seconds for me to process and not risk the health and safety of other drivers. I was charged £200 by the Highways Agency, which I have disputed as I had already arranged for recovery and not to inconvenience anyone for my mishap. Norman from the Highways Agency told me that I should of stopped in the lane of the motorway (already reduced by a lane) at rush hour, inconveniencing all other drivers to cause hours long tailbacks and potential accidents instead of stopping where I had (the safest place to pull over). To cause additional insult to the situation, he tried to explain that the Highways Agency is probably running at a loss, he thanked me for my commendable efforts plus actions taken and then hung the phone up. Highway Robbery not Highways Agency.

A bunch of useless clowns … cause problems / traffic jams when there is no need to set variable speed limits to 40 when the motorway is empty… just cheap labour wannabes….
