I am an experienced driver (since the early 80's)and had a very unusual and life threatening scary experience the other night, when the car engine cut out and then all my brakes both failed - electric handbrake and not able to go down the gears - on a steep hill up a narrow road in the dark. The car was out of control, going backwards down a steep hill. I managed to turn it sideways and stop, but was very distraught and flagged down a passing police car. The police and some passers by helped me and we got the car into a safer place, the Police tried to start it, although it was still not starting or showing any sign of life, but they had to leave me having checked I had breakdown cover, as they were in attendance on a major nearby fire, I called Gem at that point. So important that I could speak to someone and was not expected to report online. The breakdown service was first class,prompt and sympathetic from the initial phone call to the mechanic who came out. Waiting time was reasonable and less than the time anticipated and the phone calls to keep me updated and offer advice were sensible practical and easy to understand.I was taken home, with the car, and after booking it in for repair the following morning, the same mechanic and breakdown truck attended and took the car to the garage.I have not yet had a report of what is wrong with the car, but I am feeling that Gem is the best breakdown service I have experienced for years.

Immobilised my car by mistake when handbrake failed on a hill... The lovely breakdown guy GEM sent was there within 15 minutes of making the call (while I sat on the footbrake!). He sorted out the immobiliser issue and got me to a flat parking space - I didn't need recovery as this was outside my home and the car was booked in for handbrake repairs two days later. I don't think I've ever waited for longer than 45 minutes for GEM, and the customer services team are amazing. And because they insure you, rather than the car, you're covered in every vehicle, even as a passenger - which is fantastic for peace of mind. I've been with GEM for years now, and recommend them to everyone.

I broke down on the M5 on a Sunday morning at 08.00(clutch failure). After a very reassuring call with call handler Comfort and subsequent follow ups from Megan, their appointed recovery driver (Victoria Recovery) arrived bang on time within the hour after being tracked all the way. The driver was pleasant company all the way home and helpful when it came to parking my non-drivable car. Very pleased with the service from both GEM and their recovery agent.

Had an unfortunate incident which meant I was stranded however GEM responded and were with me within one hour. The office kept me up to date and the recovery who came to help had me sorted within about 10mins

While the initial recovery was completed quickly and safely, what came after was abysmal.
I was taken to a garage that had unfortunately closed down. It then took over two hours to get the car recovered home, after the operator tried to get my car unloaded on private land where we'd already been asked to move on.
The call handler remained completely inflexible throughout, essentially forcing me into paying £200 for an onward recovery. Additionally, it was impossibleto get through to GEM during this time with a constantly ringing line, or engaged.
While my initial recovery took place at 9am, by the time my car was returned home (a massive argument had to happen to get the car home and not dropped on private lane), the car was recovered again, meaning I returned home at 7pm after getting the car safely to another garage.
I will be cancelling my membership as soon as possible. Having been a customer for seven years, the level of service offered by GEM and the company they second the actual call work to is terrible. A throughly awful experience from start to finish.
As for their complaints procedure, this matches up to their assistance - as in very poor.

So far so very good. “Which” recommended and I’m covered whichever car I’m in (if taxed and MOT’d). Efficient communication and documentation.
Of course I hope I never have to put the service to the test, but that will be the ultimate proof of the pudding!

First time of using GEM and they managed inside two hours what RAC took a full day to do for me last year. First class app for reporting breakdown of my son’s car and he was kept informed constantly until recovery was made. Five star job 👏👏👏👏👏

Easy to join and looks to cover everything that the bigger companies provide, but at a substantially lower price. I haven't needed to use the breakdown service yet - so time will tell !

The sign-up experience was quick, easy, and a pleasure. Thank you.... The ultimate test of course is if the service matches this high standard when I need to utilise the breakdown facilities promised. The App with auto GPS location looks very sensible and easy.
I will review again if and when any breakdown occurs, but so far, a much better financial deal for personal cover, any vehicle, full UK Recovery anywhere and Homestart, for less than half the price of the big players. Love it so far!
OK, here's the follow up! Whilst stuck up in Sutton Coldfield at mid-night in late Jan 2026 I had a flat rear tyre; no spare just a crappy puncture repair (alleged!) tyre sealant that didn’t work of course…….. and I called out Gem. They took my call at 5 mins to midnight on a Thursday evening via their mobile phone App, and their local recovery truck had us loaded up by 12:30am and on the way to our local hotel some 7 miles away! Done and dusted within 35 minutes. Fantastic service. If any of you want an excellent breakdown service, I really can recommend Gem as my own experience certainly couldn’t really be bettered.

On breaking down I contacted Gem who responded quickly to my problem . The breakdown unit responded quickly, the problem I had could be repaired at the roadside, my vehicle & myself were delivered back to the place of my choice. Top marks to Gem . Thank you.

The telephone was answered quickly by a person! The breakdown people came within the time stated and somebody rang me twice to see if I was okay on the hard shoulder of the M4- as an elderly female travelling alone

The Customer Advisor I spoke with was pleasant. She was able to resolve my issue perfectly well in a professional, timely and yet friendly manner.
This company has always been customer focused and helpful,after having previously tried other Breakdown Cover companies. That's why we keep renewing our cover with them. They care! and thats all the customer needs when the vehicle has broken down.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company to anyone who wants quality Breakdown service.

The company failed to tell us we'd incur a £170 further charge, having encouraged us to be driven home by them after a burst tyre, rather than find a garage. They created a second job for themselves. Then they were hugely defensive about the complaint, wanting to find every means possible to avoid it, including assigning my complaint a prejudicial title. Avoid!
I'm really pleased I switched to GEM.
It's cheaper, better and from my experience of an actual breakdown, the callout time was quicker than any of the others I've used,(and I've been using breakdown insurance for over fifty years).

It is years since I had to use a breakdown service and I have only recently switched to GEM. I was impressed by the speed of response to my report of a breakdown via the app and reassured by the prompt follow up contacts from the customer service team whilst I was waiting for help to arrive. This relieved the 2 hour wait for help to arrive. The mechanic inspired confidence in his diagnosis and having got me going again was able to tell me where to buy a new battery locally.
