We had a frustrating and professionally unacceptable experience with Martin Phillips Downpatrick flooring store. We ordered 3 carpets, including one for our hall, landing and stairs, in June 2025 costing over £3,000. The problem relates to the hall, stairs and landing carpet. There were of course delays including at some point being told only part of the carpet was made and delivered to the showroom. We were informed it was returned to Ulster Carpets as the carpet should be made in one batch due to colour matching. Eventually the fitters arrived 2 October 2025 and removed the old carpets and laid the landing carpet. However, a problem arose with the stairs & hall as the fitters identified there was a misalignment problem with the pattern on the remainder of the carpet, which was strange as it was allegedly all made together in one batch. Following discussions with the showroom manager who had been summoned it was decided in the interim the substandard carpet would have to be fitted as we had no flooring & the issue be sorted out later. We paid the fitters in full in addition to the carpet costs paid in full to Martin Phillips.

In a subsequent phone call in early October with the Downpatrick showroom, we were advised Martin Phillips had arranged with Ulster Carpets to make a new section of replacement carpet for the hall but unfortunately, we would have to 'make do' with the stair carpet as we were not willing to agree to removal & refit of our disability stair lift for a second time which incidentally got damaged during the first removal. We were not really happy with this, bearing in mind according to Martin Phillips there could be issues with colour matching etc. however we had little choice.

Over the following four months there seemed to be no progress or communication.

We phoned the showroom in Downpatrick on 9th February 2026 to check what was happening but were told no one could access the computer. We got a call back later that day to check over the problem details which was strange as Martin Phillips Carpets were already fully aware of the problem plus, I had already given all the information in my earlier phone call. We were advised someone involved would be in touch later. We were still waiting 2 weeks later and decided to send an email copied to headquarters Customer Services.

This seemed to have some effect as the manager replied stating the replacement piece of carpet was still in production with Ulster Carpets. We cannot understand the delay in production of a small piece of carpet i.e. 5 months. However, it was another 4 months before we received a call at the end of May 2026 (a year since the carpet was ordered and paid for) suggesting refitting 11th June 2026. Our response was ‘We have decided to cease doing business with your company due to the ongoing issues including but not exclusively made up of long delays, lack of communication and the inferior and second-rate carpet that was eventually fitted. As almost a year has elapsed since we first visited your Downpatrick showroom, purchasing 3 carpets, and we have now had to ‘put up’ with the sub-standard stairs and hall carpet for a day short of 8 months; we would therefore prefer not to have any further dealings with your company. We have been dismayed by the treatment we received and very surprised that, supposedly, reputable firms i.e. Martin Phillips and Ulster Carpets provided such shoddy service’.
This resulted in another epistle from the manager apologising, interwoven with the usual excuses and passing some blame to Ulster Carpets. He stated as a goodwill gesture and apology for the poor service we received, he would like to send us a £100 voucher for the Slieve Donard Hotel. True to Martin Phillips, Downpatrick usual form over 2 months later and we have received nothing. We considered the ‘compensation voucher’ an insult in any case and not welcome. Our next carpet/flooring purchase will not be via Martin Phillips. Hoping never to cross one of their showroom doorsteps ever again.
Recommendation – avoid this company (Downpatrick Branch) at all costs. They have a good line in glib excuses but not so good at fulfilling their contract.

We had a very disappointing experience. We agreed in person that all carpet would be removed and taken away, and we paid extra for this service.

After the job was completed, we were then told there would be an additional charge to take away the “new carpet” waste as well — despite this being part of the same job and already agreed. Trying to separate “old” and “new” carpet just to charge more is unreasonable and feels like the terms were changed after the fact.

On top of that, the fitter gave the impression he couldn’t be bothered and was in a rush to leave once the job was done, without properly dealing with the waste as agreed.

Overall, this came across as unprofessional and misleading.

We are very happy with our purchase. The customer service was excellent – always very helpful, professional, and quick to reply to any questions. The floor panels are great quality and very good value for money. We are really pleased with the whole experience and would definitely recommend this company.

I have had nothing but positive experiences on several occasions for different types of flooring. Mark and Marty in Downpatrick have always offered their honest knowledge, helping me to choose the best option of flooring for my space and specifications. Not only professional and knowledgeable, but reliable through to fitting and after sales, any issues have been rectified, such as small delay in delivery. I was communicated with throughout.
Their independent fitters, namely Conor (carpets) and Tommy (laminate) have been fantastic. Both entirely trustworthy, tidy and also utmost professional.
Will use again.

I wanted living room carpet, mottled brown flecked with random pattern. I use a real fire and wear boots in and out from gardening, that's why I wanted mottled brown to cover up any marks. Unfortunately they're not made or stocked anywhere in mainland GB ! I ordered mine from Martin Phillips in Belfast and delivery from The Van Men also in Belfast. The colour ordered was Firenze Brushstrokes Burnt Umber. Delivered from factory to Martin phillips and then with deliverance shipped over.

The customer service here is fantastic, there was an issue with the delivery initially but was resolved quickly and with me (the customer) in mind. Communication was quick, polite and professional - especially over the Christmas period - the product is also good quality and as described. Would definitely recommend.

Couldn’t fault Martin Phillips Newtownards, we recently renovated our new house and have gotten a lot of flooring from here. Everyone we dealt with was great. The fitters were exceptional and gave us some really good advice for further flooring.

Very easy to order online. Was contacted soon after order placed by phone for an update and delivery dates. Delivery was perfect, very friendly and nothing was a bother. The lino is perfect for my needs and at a great price too.

For me personally the speed of getting my purchase from place of order and into my home and the fitters are first class, friendly and efficient

I was told the flooring I picked online was no longer available as clearance and was full price , I was able to purchase online at clearance price . I checked with store and was told this twice . I was quoted £600 and was able to buy online for £150.
Very poor service from sale staff in newtonards branch

We got stairs, landing, attic and all bedrooms carpeted by this company's Banbridge store. Lee and his team were so helpful and their prices were the most competitive we could find. Their fitters were professional, worked so hard and did an excellent job. I cannot fault them.

Bought over £800 worth of carpet from them. Originally planned to lay the carpet myself but unfortunately slipped a disc in my back and couldn't. Called the store to see if they could fit it. Took me 4 days of calling 3-4 times per day just to get through to the store. Then to be told they wouldn't be able to fit it for 4 weeks. The person on the phone couldn't have seemed less interested if they tried. Once they have your money the customer service is non existent.

Previously ordered vinyl for my mum as a present, took 4 months of delays then when vinyl was laid, was not t product I ordered. Salesman in Ballymena practically called me a liar, when I checked online Def a different vinyl/ colour. Head office gave me a discount on a carpet for myself to apologize as my mum didn't want to go through drama of upheaval again. I then ordered ordered a vinyl for my home, got a call the afternoon before due to be laid, not in stock n told I should have ordered in in shop rather than online, so my fault 🤔 apparently will be delayed just over a week, so lost t day I booked off work and have had to change delivery of a large sofa until they lay it. No confidence in this store

This is my 2nd purchase from Martin Philips and once again I am so pleased with my floor! Excellent price and the fitting was quick & tidy! Quality of floor is outstanding and I’m getting lots of compliments! I will be a returning customer for sure!
