From modest beginnings in Enfield as a single store in 1971, Jollyes has now grown into one of the leading pet food superstores with over 100 locations across the UK alongside a market-leading position in Northern Ireland. From Perth to Plymouth, Newry to Norwich, at Jollyes customers can find anything for their pet, from pet food, pet toys and an array of pet accessories. Customers are actively encouraged to bring their pets into store, while customers shop because Jollyes people are passionate about pets. Potty about puppies and crazy for cats, no matter what the animal, store colleagues are always on hand to help with anything from product advice, to picking the perfect pet and accessories. Many stores also run community clinics offering vaccinations and other advice from trained vets. And if one of Jollyes stores isn’t close by, there’s helpful advice on Jollyes website where you can ask the expert. Jollyes was named 2023 Pet Retail Chain of the Year at the Pet Industry Federation Awards and was named best retailer under £250m turnover in the 2024 Retail Week awards. Earlier this month it was also named for the first time as one of the best big companies to work for in the Sunday Times annual survey. Daft I call it!

I'm wondering why I'm even bothering to use my own valuable time on a comparatively minor issue when my experience at Jollyes in York today suggests the company isn't interested in customers' views. It may even seem a petty matter, but any listening business knows that success is always in the detail of the buyer experience and what is helpful to the customer rather than what is convenient to the trader.

And if, in Yorkshire, we come across something that is plain 'daft' , it can wind us up and we need to get it off our chest by speaking up.

I welcomed the opening of Jollyes in York as a competitor to Pets at Home. I began buying food for our 18-year-old cat, which generally is a bit cheaper than its main competitor. The brand is Purina Proplan, Sterilised, Chicken in Gravy.

On my second visit it appeared that they only had chicken in jelly (a very important difference to a choosy cat) and then I discovered the two versions were mixed-up on the shelves. I mentioned very politely to the young woman on the checkout that I was about to head towards Pets at Home when I discovered the issue and suggested, that like all other 'supermarkets' that I know, the different varieties should be customer-facing on the aisle by type; how otherwise is one expected to know if the product is stocked? She courteously said she would pass on my comments and when asked by Jollyes by email to give them feedback I made the same point.

On my next visit it appeared to have been taken heed of.

Today, I couldn't find the variety (lots of duck but no chicken). There were several rows of the different varieties of the product and one completely empty row, which I thought may have been the chicken and therefore sold out. I was about to leave empty-handed and head into the city towards Pets at Home when I wondered if they were mixed-up again?

And yes; there, behind the duck, was the chicken. But it wasn't because of a careless previous customer putting it back in the wrong row...the duck and chicken varieties were all mixed-up.

At the checkout I mentioned the issue quietly and almost apologeticlly to a very polite and well spoken young man and explained that they had nearly lost the sale again as a result. He was understanding, but a young woman joined-in to tell me that mixing them up was a matter of company policy because of lack of shelf space! The maths of that seemed odd and I'm still thinking about it. In disbelief, I invited her to come with me to the section to demonstrate that space didn't seem to be an issue because there was an empty row, but she didn't take up the offer.

I tried to explain to her how daft that was to stack things deliberately so that the customer might not be able to find them and she interrupted me to reply formulaically that "she heard what I was saying" but she couldn't do anything about it because it was company policy and she showed me sheets of paper which were apparenty instructions to mix them!

I queried whether the store manager had a say in all this and she revealed she was the store manager. I asked why she didn't do something about it, such as providing customer feedback up the management chain. She said she had, but it hadn't changed anything because it was company policy.

I hope I remained courteous at all times, but she must have sensed a growing frustration in my voice at this shrug-of-a-shoulder "company policy' response to my initial well-meaning attempt to offer constructive feedback.

I ended this highly unsatisfactory and quite ridiculous conversation by suggesting Jollyes ought to recognise that its staff might actually have brains and that its managers ought to be allowed to exercise commonsense in such matters; that the company should at least respond to feedback from them if they know where the 'wheels are creaking' at the sharp end of the business.

All I can do in the meantime is to vote with wallet and return to Pets at Home with my tail between my legs (pet pun intended) where the extra £ per box can be offset by the time spent heading out to the Monks Cross Shopping Centre and being forced as a matter of company policy to rifle through the boxes on the shelves in the hope I find the variety I'm looking for.

Games of hide and seek can be fun, but only at children's parties and not for adults shopping in a hurry

If Jollyes want to succeed in Yorkshire they need to realise that Yorkshire folk are born with a built-in 'daftness spotting' antenna and mine was twitching.

Bring Cat Club cat food back to…

Bring Cat Club cat food back to Northern Ireland stores!! I purchased a lot of this brand and you only supply one other brand of tinned cat food-Classic- which my cats won’t eat and it is more expensive. Your reasoning for not selling it anymore doesn’t make sense. You lost one good customer in me, Tesco won over you. Date of experience was when you stopped selling the product. Date below was not entered by me.
