Poor Customer Service and No Effort to Help

Really disappointed with the customer service at JD Gym West Brom. I lost my headphones there — a very important gift from my mum with huge sentimental value — and when I spoke to a staff member, she barely seemed interested. She immediately said nobody had handed anything in, despite not even knowing what the headphones looked like or what colour they were. No effort was made to properly check, no cameras were looked at, and I was basically brushed off before she went home.

What made it even worse is that I tried calling the gym numerous times throughout the day and nobody answered the phone at all. Losing something valuable is stressful enough, but the complete lack of care, communication, and effort from the staff made the situation far more upsetting.

I understand items can go missing, but I expected basic customer service and at least some willingness to help.

The JD Gym in West Brom

The JD Gym in West Brom has high-quality, top-tier equipment, which is a strong positive. It is also an improvement compared to the Newtown branch in terms of overall facilities and setup. However, it still isn’t fully perfect.

The lighting in the gym is quite poor, making it difficult at times to see machine settings and numbers clearly. There is also an imbalance in equipment, with too many cardio machines compared to weight training machines, and a lack of cable machines which limits exercise variety.

The layout feels quite cramped, as machines are placed very close together, which can make it uncomfortable during busy times. Some of the machine attachments also use squeeze-style clips, which are less convenient compared to traditional pin or clip systems.

On the facilities side, the sauna experience is quite basic and feels more like dry heat rather than a proper sauna or steam setup. The toilets being located very close to the sauna area also causes unpleasant smells to affect that part of the gym.

Overall, while the equipment quality and West Brom location are improvements, the gym doesn’t feel fully worth the £26.99 membership price. A price closer to £20 would feel more reasonable based on the current layout, facilities, and overall experience.

I’ve been going to JD Gym because it’s…

I’ve been going to JD Gym because it’s close to my home, which is the main reason I’ve stuck with it. However, the experience is honestly frustrating most of the time.

The gym is almost always overcrowded, and it’s really hard to find free machines during peak hours. Many times I end up waiting or skipping exercises because nothing is available. It also feels very stuffy inside, like there’s not enough ventilation sometimes it literally feels like you need more oxygen while working out.

On top of that, some machines are out of order and don’t seem to get fixed quickly, which makes the situation even worse.

It’s convenient location wise, but overall it often feels like I’m wasting my time instead of having an effective workout.

JD Gym West Bromwich

I've used this gym for few years. Today, when I was on the treadmill, a staff member came over and said that they've moved my bag from behind the treadmill because "it'll get caught in the machine" and then told me (yes TOLD me) to "put it in a locker".
Less than a minute later another staff member (no uniform) came over and started to give me the same lecture.
Frist of all- don't touch my stuff, second- you think a 25lt back pack is going to get caught in a treadmill belt, are you serious?
It's a pity that these two job's worth don't do anything about the appalling state of the gym most mornings-weights and dumbells all over the place.
I'm out, membership being cancelled.
-edited to add- my bag contains my weight belt, wraps, lifting straps and so on. I don't think dumb and dumber would appreciate me putting those on the floor while I'm getting ready to lift. Also, I've had my bag with me on every visit for the last three years with no problems.

For safety reasons, we do ask members to keep bags in lockers, as items placed around machines can create trip or entanglement hazards, even if this hasn’t previously caused an issue. This applies to all bags, including those containing lifting equipment.

ladies only section

Hi,
I signed up to this gym specifically because it offers a ladies-only section. Unfortunately, I have been disappointed to find that, on a regular basis, male staff members enter this area to fix equipment, collect items, or carry out cleaning, often without prior warning. Even when verbal warnings are given by mic, many of us are wearing headsets and cannot hear them.
We are a group of women who chose this facility for privacy and comfort, and these frequent interruptions are becoming inconvenient and uncomfortable. The ladies-only section should be genuinely reserved for women and free from male access, except in strictly managed and clearly communicated circumstances.
I would appreciate it if this issue could be addressed, either by ensuring advance notice through visible signage or notifications, scheduling or assigning female staff where possible.

This morning 20 April between 10am and…

This morning 20 April between 10am and 10.30am some one steal my money from the locker it was 615 pounds a lot money for me I checked and locked my locker properly before I start the gym...When I come back to get my stuff for sauna I found my locker was opened and the padd lock hanging on the side is in a good condition .. No one try to help me they said no camera is there how it's possible if any big incident happen there how they will investigate it.. so shocking

NOT FREE PARKING YOU WILL GET CCJ

Do not use this gym the free parking will get you a ccj and you will be blacklisted from getting a credit card or a mortgage they say it’s free parking but the company who own the car park still send out letters for parking charges

West Bromwich gym is filthy!

For a start the app is very basic and to access perx is impossible. Customer service haven’t been very helpful.

Can’t book an appointment with a trainer to show you around the gym as a new subscriber at the gym. Can’t book classes, I’ve been told it’s first come first served.

There are no spray bottles or paper to wipe down machines. However there are signs to say wipe the machines.

The women’s changing room are dirty and the dirtiest I’ve come across. Tissue, hair wrappers on the floor and surfaces. The toilets smell like bullring market toilets.
Do the cleaners ever visit? Do staff not do spot checks during the day? I’ve been twice and both times it’s been the same thing.

Who are the staff as I can’t see their profiles on the app. Just like I can’t see anything other than access qr code. Is there a digital code to access the gym. All of this information should be on the app or have been sent to me via email when I joined.
The comms is shocking.

I am shocked at the level of hygiene…

I am shocked at the level of hygiene the men's room and sauna room is. The entire place is absolutely stinky and smelly like dirty old bin never washed over time.

Th wash rooms are inappropriately designed, someone sits on the toilet and does poo. You can smell it like you are there next to them. The sauna is over packed and stinks like crap. The use of space for sauna is like fitting dogs and cats in a cage,

Having a shower, you don't have your own pothole where the the dirt goes into, it actually travels to another person shower where it gets drained. This means you are stepping on to their bodies dirt. Disgusting!. Some people are very dirty and smelly. The don't look after themselves.

The whole entire men's room design is absolutely shocking and appalling. Furthermore, the gym is really good. The facility inside the men's room is beyond believe and disgusting.

Inappropriate behaviour from manager and two staff members.

I was contemplating on writing a review the last couple of days but this evening I feel I had no choice after hearing how a member of staff spoke to a member of the gym. He will be mentioned later on.

I’ve started coming to the gym this year. I find some staff members (only witnessed 3) particularly rude, unprofessional and unhelpful.
I get very nervous coming to the gym and it has taken a lot for me to step out and come to make myself better for my health. I have had negative experiences in other gyms and when I personally spoke to a manager in the other gym, his response was she is having a bad day and dismissed my concerns. Her attitude and energy made my anxiety worse. However I’m not here to discuss that, I’m writing this for JD gyms West Bromwich.

You can’t get in, staff are sitting at the tables on their phones and their responses are, ‘I’m not on shift!’ They leave members out there and continue to sit on their ass. Absolutely embarrassing. If it was said as a joke, not one person thought it was funny. It can’t be a joke when I’ve heard two people say it, one very short female wearing a baseball cap and one very tall male who wears a hoody, doesn’t look like he is working and is constantly on his phone. He is rude to members in the gym I have heard this as I’ve walked past including today. I haven’t seen him once do any work but natter to people allll the time. Does he actually do work? What are you paying him to do? If he isn’t, why isn’t he performance managed? I’ve seen other staff clean, run up and down with a hoover and wipe equipment down and put weights back and work tirelessly and still help gym members!

Secondly I could hear a conversation last week with a gym member and 3 staff members. I’m not sure of what the conversation was it was the day of the snow storm, but I heard the white male staff member said ‘he doesn’t last two minutes’ and they started to laugh and I’m sure I heard him say he is the manager. He wore a checkered top. This conversation can be heard from the bikes so I wonder who else heard this.
This is highly unprofessional and inappropriate behaviour. It makes the gym look awful and you make your colleagues look bad by your behaviour and attitude.
That conversation would have someone new to the gym thinking, is this what all of the staff members are like? It is not fair on the other managers and colleagues to give that perception about them too when you are behaving like that.

Only those 3 people I have mentioned are a disgrace to the gym and should first of all take up customer service training, have regular visits from their managers, be performance managed and they need to be held accountable for their actions and for the inappropriate comments.
I don’t think you hear such conversations at your GP, Pharmacy, restaurants, cinemas etc. in front of the public.

Sitting at the front whilst on break or not on shift, MOVE! We don’t work with you therefore we don’t know if you’re working or not.

You have vulnerable people coming to the gym from different walks of life. Someone may come from a abusive relationship and that is their get away, some may have strict families who just about allow them to come to the gym, different religions who I think would not appreciate such comments from a ‘manager’.

Another thing, the day of the snow; an alarm went off. Not one person went to attend. The public (gym members) don’t know if that was a fire alarm or what. I saw the tall hoody staff member and another staff member who had a bike go very slowly in their own time. What if that had been a real fire alarm? Would those two boys take their time?

Sort it out or get rid of them. They give JD West Bromwich a bad reputation.

I must say, I have had no other problems from other staff members at this gym. They are all welcoming, have smiles and are happy to help. You are all an asset to the team. It is a shame that three of your colleagues aren’t like you guys.

Thanks Craig for getting Jordan back for the body combat class ! !! For anyone wanting to join don’t hesitate - clean gym -. Has had a recent upgrade new carpets and gym equipment !! They always have joining offers so check it out and please come to Jordan’s body combat class on Mondays 6.30 - if you want to lose weight or get fit she is fab .. you’ll be sweating lol 😂

Small women’s section
