Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, we’re sorry to hear how disappointed you were with the manure and top soil you purchased.

Our growing media products are not packed wet, as this would not pass through our production process. However, the bags do have transportation holes, and if they are stored outdoors at any point, water can enter the bag. This is why we advise storing composts and soils in a dry, frost‑free location.

That said, we would be more than happy to look into this further for you. If you’re willing, please contact us at customerservice@westland.com with photos of the product, the QA code printed on the bag, and details of where it was purchased.

This will allow us to investigate properly and advise next steps.

We appreciate you raising this and hope we can resolve it for you.

Thanks,
The Westland Team

Wint buy again…

It might be eco friendly and produce good result, we'll have to wait and see.
It was soaking wet, very large lumps of compost that are hard to break down, a lot of white stuff in it (I don't know if it's fungus?), lots of pieces of unrotted wood, not well rotted. I won't buy again.

Hello,

We’re sorry to read about your experience and understand why this would be disappointing.
We’d like to reassure you that compost is not packed wet or damp, as it simply would not pass through our production processes. Bags do, however, have small ventilation holes to allow airflow and palletisation, and if they are stored in conditions that aren’t dry or frost‑free, moisture can unfortunately enter after manufacture.

As compost is a natural product, it can also contain visible materials such as wood fibres or naturally occurring fungi, which are harmless but can sometimes be unexpected. That said, we’d be more than happy to look into this further and review what you’ve experienced.

If you’re willing, please contact our Customer Service team at customerservice@westland.com with a few photos and the QA code from the back of the bag, and we’ll be glad to help.

Thanks,
The Westland Team

Absolutely rubbish compost. I’ve been a professional gardener for 40 years and I have NEVER had failures like I’ve had using the multipurpose with John Innes!
My sweetcorn is reluctant to root out and 50% has actually died. Complete waste of my money and my time. Will now have to spend more money on more seeds. Get your act together Westland

Hello,

We’re really sorry to hear about your experience and understand how frustrating this must be, especially given your many years of professional gardening experience. Losing plants, time and money is understandably disappointing and not something any gardener expects.

Compost is a natural product, and a range of external factors can influence how it performs in different growing conditions. That said, we’d genuinely like the opportunity to look into what you’ve experienced and see how we can help.

If you’re willing, please contact our Customer Service team at customerservice@westland.com with a few photos and the QA code from the back of the bag, and we’ll be happy to review this with you directly.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, we do value hearing from our customers.

Peat-free simply does not work

Jack's Magic Multi-Purpose Compost used to be brilliant and I had absolutely no problem with germinating all my vegetable and flowers seeds. This year, peat-free compost, absolute waste of time and money. I have lost so many seeds. Even when they have germinated, they have shrivelled up and died. I understand the peat-free arguments but, let's be honest, it does not work. The clue is in the fact that professional nurseries are still allowed to use peat-based compost. Have wasted all of my time and money this spring. Pointless.

Purchased Westland premium gold nuggets…Update on their service

Purchased Westland premium gold nuggets to get a good visual effect on a display border. I was shocked with the disparagy between the images shown on the packaging, to its contents. Their was no evidence of the golden colour, it was dirty brown, even after being left in the sun. There was was a very high volume of stripped bark, this would have been an estimate of 50 percent of its volume. I contacted Westland to highlight this issue, sending in many photos. I haven't received a reply following submission of images. I don't think l can attach images to this review, which would give clear indication of how starkly different the contents are to description and image on packaging.

As an update, I received an email on 22nd April to apologise, and the offer of a garden voucher, which l accepted. Despite reminding them that l have not received it, l got neither a reply to this, nor the garden voucher. I have no faith in the integrity of Westland as a company.

Hello,

Thank you for your review, and I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment with our Premium Pine Bark Nuggets.

The product is made from natural materials, so there can be some variation in colour and texture. The golden appearance typically develops as the bark dries out, but it should still be broadly in line with expectations shown on the packaging. From your description, it does sound like what you received wasn’t as expected.

I can see that you’ve already been in contact with our team and that your query is being handled. We’re sorry for the delay in getting back to you and for any inconvenience caused.

If there’s anything further you’d like us to look into, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and I’m sorry to hear you’ve been disappointed after giving our compost a fair trial over two seasons.

Westland Multi-Purpose Compost does contain a starter fertiliser designed to support plants for the first 4–6 weeks. As you’ve described, strong initial germination followed by a slowdown in growth can sometimes be linked to how seedlings are supported after this early stage. Seedlings initially rely on the energy stored within the seed, and once this is used up, they depend on available nutrients, space, and growing conditions to continue developing.

Our Multi-Purpose Compost is suitable for seed sowing; however, for the best possible start, we would always recommend using a dedicated seed sowing compost. These are specially formulated with a finer texture and balanced nutrient levels specifically for germination and early root development, whereas multi-purpose compost is designed to support plants at all stages of growth.

We would really like to look into this further for you. If you’re able to contact us at customerservice@westland.com
with the QA code from the bag and any photos of your seedlings, our team can investigate this in more detail.

Thanks,

Poor results from this compost.

I bought 3 bags of Westland Multipurpose peat- free compost with added John Innes for my seedlings & young plants. I am hugely disappointed. Not only have my seedlings failed to thrive, each pot or seed tray has sprouted fungi & is surrounded by fungus gnats. I have watered every few days, some plants are in the spare room which is gently heated & 1 tray is in the greenhouse, neither place is damp. This has never happened to me before, I have grown tomatoes for nearly 40 years. It’s not like I can return pots & trays of compost to the garden centre. I think I will have to start again, if it’s not too late. A complete waste of money, seeds & time.

Hello,

Thank you for getting in touch, and I’m really sorry to hear how disappointing this has been for you.

Westland composts are produced under stringent, controlled manufacturing procedures designed to eliminate the likelihood of insects, fungi and other contaminants. However, compost is a natural, living product, and both fungi and fungus gnats can occur naturally as they are attracted to organic, decaying matter. Any fungi that survive our production processes are saprophytic in nature, meaning they are harmless and feed only on organic material, not plants. Fungus gnats are also commonly associated with organic composts and typically disperse once the compost is used outdoors.

We appreciate that this will have been disappointing for you. If you contact us directly at customerservice@westland.com, our customer service team will be happy to look into this further and help wherever possible.

The fast acting lawn seed was anything but

The fast acting lawn seed was anything but. Applied in late March with new top soil and lawn feed - watered daily - 14 days later no sign of anything despite claims that I would have new growth in 4 days and a new lawn in 10 days. Given that this is an expensive product I am hugely unimpressed.
I was staggered to see Westland’s dreadful reviews and score - they had better wake up. I will be giving my garden centre an appropriate head scrubbing.

Hello,

We’re sorry to read this and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We understand how frustrating it can be when you’re expecting to see results quickly, particularly with a premium lawn seed.

While this seed can germinate faster in ideal conditions, germination times are based on soil temperature rather than the time of year. In early spring, soil temperatures are often only just beginning to warm, and if conditions are cooler or there have been frosts, germination can take considerably longer. Provided the seed has not been covered too deeply and conditions improve, you should begin to see grass coming through as the soil warms further.

That said, we’d really like the opportunity to review this with you directly and make sure everything has been done under the best possible conditions. If you haven’t already contacted us, please email our Customer Service team at customerservice@westland.com with any helpful details, such as when the seed was sown, how it was prepared and watered, and photos if available.

Thank you again for your feedback, it’s important to us, and we’d welcome the chance to support you further.

Hello,

We’re really sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share the detail with us.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like you followed the correct preparation steps and achieved initial germination, which indicates the seed performed as expected at the sowing stage. However, newly established grass can still be more vulnerable during its first winter, particularly in prolonged wet conditions, as the root system is not yet as deep or resilient as an established lawn. This can sometimes result in new areas thinning or failing, even when surrounding mature grass remains unaffected.

Our Smart Lawn Seed can be sown from March to October when temperatures are suitable, and the coating is designed to help support germination by improving moisture balance. However, while this helps establishment, it cannot fully protect young grass from extended periods of waterlogging or challenging winter conditions before the roots have had sufficient time to develop.

That said, we completely understand how disappointing this is, especially when you’ve had good results with lawns in the past. This certainly isn’t the experience we want for our customers.

We’ll reach out to you directly on your existing case to help put this right and support you in re-establishing the area this season.

Thanks again for your feedback, it’s genuinely helpful and allows us to support customers better.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t seen the results you expected.

Our Westland Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer is registered for use from May to August, as this is when conditions are most suitable for the product to work effectively. Even if the lawn, weeds and moss are actively growing, cooler soil temperatures and prolonged wet weather can delay the reaction or mean the treatment doesn’t work fully.

For the best results, we would recommend applying the product again later in spring, within the approved usage window and following the on‑pack instructions. Under the right conditions, moss will usually blacken within about a week and weeds will begin to distort and die back.

If you’d like any guidance on timing or application to get the most out of the treatment, our team are always happy to help, you can reach us at customerservice@westland.com.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and we’re sorry to hear you’re disappointed with the compost.

Our Westland Multi-Purpose Compost with added John Innes is a peat-free compost. As part of this, it contains our BIO3 formulation, which is made up of wood fibres and composted bark. These materials are carefully blended and screened to approximately 10–15mm, meaning you may see some larger natural pieces. These are intentionally included to improve drainage and aeration, making the compost suitable for a wide range of planting uses.

That said, if what you’re seeing doesn’t seem in line with this description, we’d very much like to look into it for you. Please email us directly at customerservice@westland.com

Westland compost a haven for gnats

This is probably the worst compost on the market. This is the second year that I purchased their compost and it is the second time that it appears to be made up of small pieces of wood. I used the compost in my indoor plant pots last year as well as in the garden, and the house started to get full of gnats. My daughter said it was the compost but I did not believe her. Then again this year when I changed the compost, the same thing happened only this time the gnats were far more in numbers. I have now purchased Miracle Grow compost to change the compost in my indoor plants. Please avoid Westland compost till they actually supply compost instead of wood chips.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and I’m sorry to hear about the issues you’ve experienced.

The small wood pieces you’ve noticed are part of the structure of modern peat-free composts, as they help support aeration and healthy root growth.

Fungus gnats are unfortunately more prevalent nowadays, and while we do everything we can to prevent them from entering our compost bags, there are some external factors that can influence their attraction to the material and, subsequently, into the home.

For indoor plants, we would always recommend using a dedicated indoor potting mix. These blends are specifically formulated for houseplants and are proven to be far less attractive to fungus gnats, helping to minimise the risk of them appearing indoors.

We’d really like to look into your experience properly. If you’re able to contact us directly at customerservice@westland.com with some images of the compost and the QA codes from the bags, our Quality team can investigate this further.

Thank you again for raising this with us.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We’re really sorry to hear how disappointed you’ve been, both with your lawn results and with the service you received from us. That’s never the experience we want for our customers.

Grass seed will often germinate within three weeks when conditions are warm and the soil is moist but well-drained. However, colder temperatures and very wet weather, like we’ve seen recently, can slow or even prevent germination. While fleece can help retain warmth and moisture, in these conditions it can unfortunately trap too much water and cause the seed to rot.

From your photos we could see some early signs of growth, so you may notice the lawn thickening up as it dries out, or fully recovering in spring. A light overseed then will help keep it healthy and even.

Kind regards,
The Westland Team
