Smooth but with room for improvement
The process is relatively smooth. A few things would have made this better. #2 below would liberate a lot of funds I could use to invest in EquityZen, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
1. More detailed financial disclosure on the pre-IPO companies offered. More is always better.
2. The ability to invest from one's 401(k) or IRA. For me, funds would have needed to be withdrawn from those accounts, a taxable event, and then invested. I think someone once mentioned IRA and 401k companies that you work with. I didn't get far enough to figure out whether they could be a solution tax-wise, because the administrative fees they charged accountholders were so high it wouldn't have been worth it.
3. It took several attempts for me to get an intelligible response from customer service, Are you using AI? It felt like I was getting generic responses that didn't not answer my question.

Regarding your point on financial disclosures, we understand the desire for more data. Unfortunately, we typically do not have access to the company's most recent financials or their investor presentation. Any information that is provided regarding an investment opportunity is publicly available or is derived from publicly available information. Given the lack of transparency in these markets, among other reasons, the investments on the EquityZen platform do not suit all investor profiles.
To address your interest in investing via a 401(k) or IRA, we do work with partners to help facilitate this. The self-directed IRAs we typically work with are RocketDollar and Alto IRA. To help you navigate the tax and fee considerations, we are providing an EquityZen Help Center article to assist you: https://help.equityzen.com/en/articles/2856364-can-i-invest-with-a-self-directed-ira.
Finally, regarding customer service, we apologize for the frustration. If you use our chat bot, an AI agent will try to answer your question. However, you can always request communication from a real EquityZen employee by choosing the 'Get more help' button.
