My elective in SVG!
I arranged my 6 week elective in St Vincent and the Grenadines with Caribbean Elective abroad. Prior to going, I didn’t know anyone who had visited either St Vincent or gone on elective with CEA, so it was a bit of a gamble but it was 100% worth it.
From seamlessly being collected at the airport, to being taken to pick up groceries, the most gorgeous villa with its own pool and stunning views to having a 24/7 contact on the island, the service provided by CEA was excellent.
The elective programme is ideal for anyone who wants to travel outside of Europe but is perhaps a bit nervous travelling on their own. This gives you the opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone whilst travelling somewhere new, but meet other medical students along the way, all whilst being looked after by a lovely team who all grew up on the island and know it really well. I felt having connections on the island meant I was able to integrate myself in island life a lot better than if I self arranged my elective.
St Vincent and the Grenadines itself is beautiful. It’s far less developed than other Caribbean islands despite its proximity to Barbados and St Lucia. I felt like I had a really authentic experience and saw a side of medicine very different to that of the UK. Despite not many tourists being present on the island, the local people are incredibly friendly, I felt safe and welcomed at all times. The Grenadines are exactly what you picture when you think of the Caribbean, white sand beaches, clear waters and palm trees making this elective the perfect mix of work and play.
Overall, I can’t recommend this elective programme enough!
