Cant speak highly enough of the BCoJ. The course content is great, the tutor feedback is really timely and insightful and the admin team have fully supported whenever I have had had issues or questions. I would 100% recommend this course and the college to anyone.

I am really enjoying the Professional Freelance Journalism Course and learning a great deal about what is looked for in writing freelance articles. The tutorials are really excellent and packed with ideas, information, advice and tips. The feedback from assignments is encouraging and positive in critically analysing what has worked, what could be improved and how to progress. This is a second to none course which provides everything you need to know to be able to write good freelance articles confidently. This course also crucially prepares you to get your articles published in making sure you know who your article is for, how to write a brief and how to approach editors. Everything you need to begin freelance writing is covered in this course. I cannot praise it highly enough. I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone who wants to write freelance.

I always wanted to be a journalist, however, life has demanded a different path from me. I was struggled to do a job that I hated every hour of my day. Then a friend came to me and gave me an indication about the British College of Journalism. I did not have the money to pay, even been a really good and fair price. Then I got a gift from my wife. She paid for my enrolment and there I was. Ready to finally, after 41 years of waiting, discover what it would look like in the journalist world. Guess what? Pandemic! I was very sick, lost a few friends, but thanks to the British College of Journalism and all its amazing team, today, I am one step closer to becoming a freelance journalist. Thank you all of you for your help, for your professionalism, and for truly caring about helping people to reach their dreams. If I could my review here would have 10 stars. Thank you.

This course is definitely worth 5 stars, for the content, learning and people. I chose this course to help me with starting in the blogging world, but can see this course being interesting to any one who wishes to refine their writing skills or someone who is starting out. This course is extremely well structured, and has lead me through the process of being a person with a dream,
to being able to see a very real path to becoming a freelance journalist.

I've been able to see the results in my writing and my approach to articles develop over the duration of the course.

I came across the Professional Freelance Journalist course when I was hunting about for a course to do as a pastime. I love learning and have a few Open university courses under my belt. I love the sense of achievement of completing a course but I also love learning about new subjects.

I enjoy learning at home in what little spare time I get and since I enjoy writing I thought I might enjoy learning how to write professionally and perhaps seeing something in print one day.

I found the subject and course fascinating. I only finished the course last week and thought I would never have the confidence to actually approach an editor with a pitch. I have been thinking it over though and actually I do have the confidence. I have had excellent feedback from Judy my tutor and the course has taught me everything I need to know so why not.

There is a lot to take in but Judy is friendly and very experienced and the tutorials are clear and well structured. I am just so glad I found this course. I'm looking forward to seeing my work in print but I will enjoy the whole process of thinking of articles, pitching and all that needs to be done to finally have work commissioned. it will be such a thrill and well worth the effort. xx

Such an excellent enjoyable course full of invaluable information, tips and lessons. It has broadened my insight into creative and effective writing, challenged me and taken me out of my comfort zone.

My tutor’s feedback on my assignments has been fast, constructive and inspirational. I am one assignment short of completing this course. The college has been very supportive and flexible in offering me an extension to complete the course successfully.

I believe the knowledge I have gained and the skills I have developed will help me to kickstart a career in freelance writing.

I am part way through the course, and have been enjoying the assignments so far. I have needed to reach out with a few questions and have always received a fast and thorough response. The assignments allow flexibility to work in your niche field which provides practice and keeps you interested.
4 stars is because I have not finished the course yet so can not make a fair review on its entirety. I will update my review on completion.

I am happy with the course as it has taught me a lot about writing for a different audience than I am used to.

There are many self-assessments. I recommend taking them seriously as they are as important as those you send to college.

The turnaround time for the assessments is quick; you can also send questions to your tutor.

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that if you have a question, you have to use a different email address. This makes it a bit cumbersome.

I also hoped the course would include something about science journalism. I am about 3/4 through it and so far this hasn't been covered. However, this is not a big deal since much of what you'll learn from this course is transferable. I think the course is good value for money.

This is an excellent course, very practical and informative. The tutors are extremely helpful. Due to personal circumstances I was granted an extension to help me complete the course - I am eternally grateful to the British College of Journalism for this, and am delighted to recommend them to anyone interested in studying journalism.

I am thoroughly enjoying the course content. Firstly, because the guidance around discipline in communications has helped my overall presentation. The curriculum is comprehensive yet easily understood, and feedback always elevates me to the next level.

Loved the course. I got so many tips on how to become a better writer and how to conduct interviews (which is what I have struggled with). Got very good feedback on all my assignments and the staff were very helpful if I needed help with anything.

My original review of the British College of Journalism was given 5 stars. Since I graduated - some 9 months ago - my experience has been that only one of my article proposals has ever been accepted.in spite of sending numerous and diverse proposals to many magazines. While I accept that there has to be some work involved - sending numerous articles out over a prolonged period of time is disheartening especially when I gave up writing books (Which sell internationally) to write for magazines.
Granted I did graduate during lockdown. This was problematical in itself. Those specialist organisations -around 25 in all - who I approached for information for the article that I was asked to write - just didn't get back to me. They were working from home and couldn't get the information together in the deadline that I had. In the end I did manage to find a couple of nutritionists and a quote from an organisation but the whole experience took well over 40 hours and was extremely stressful.
I pride myself on being well organised and communicating with people. I am polite. I like to think that I have fairly earned what I am being paid . I enjoy writing and I have years of medical research and many health related qualifications as well as distinctions in mental health, counselling., nutritional medicine, immunology and so on. .
My experience is that no matter how well a course is put together - and I did learn a lot - there is unlikely to be any work at the end of it. It is a lottery and a stressful one at that. Yes, if you want the qualification then go ahead. My tutor was excellent and I do not regret taking the course. However, I do think that it should be made clearer that at the end of it, you may not be accepted to write any articles.

Very impressive course. I have learnt a lot from it and my tutors were very good with constructive yet helpful feedback on all my assignments. I would definitely recommended this course.

First thing that I would like to say is they are so organised; from start to finish everything is in order and they always get back to you whether you raise a query or feedback. Secondly the course provides you almost everything you would need to learn regarding freelance journalism; from all relevant notes, to necessary contacts. And thirdly, every submission you make is checked very throughly by the course tutor, very relevant feedback and never late. Even although l have already had bachelors and masters degree in journalism, The British College of Journalism refreshed my knowledge and provided me with very valuable extra information, especially with the practical side of the job and recent trends in the area of journalism. 100% value for the money.

A fantastic course with great support. If you want to learn everything about Journalism, then this is the course for you. The course itself is in-depth, easy to follow, and you can study when you want. The tutors are quick to get back to you and they clearly want you to succeed. I can't recommend this course highly enough.

The Professional Freelance Journalism Course gave me the flexibility of online distance learning with valuable and insightful feedback from experienced tutors while providing a platform to launch my freelance journalism journey both in the UK and in the USA. An unexpected outcome of this journey was my TEDx talk in California – Community, Connection and the Art of Storytelling!

The course was not only a great way to hone my writing skills but was also cost effective with a manageable assignment load. Successfully completing the course gave me the confidence and credibility to pursue opportunities as a freelancer and I completed a copywriting internship at a marketing agency called The Marketing Eye based in Sussex.

The Professional Freelance Journalism qualification also led to writing for a local online news service called the Uckfield News also in Sussex. I had launched my Floral Photography blog, Fables and Flora, at the same time to keep up with my writing practice and combining my photography and writing skills gave my articles great traction.

The writing industry is a highly competitive one. As a freelance writer, there is no shortage of finding paid work but the difficulty is usually finding work that pays fairly and consistently. Finding a niche is helpful and my passion for the arts, creativity and connecting people was a great driver for my articles.

Freelance journalism was a valuable transferable skill to leverage when relocating from the UK to the USA. I began writing for an online news service called Patch and I am still a contributor several years later and I train others to use the platform as well. Writing also got me to work on a hyperlocal news project with Google which was great fun!

People often seek permission to pursue what they are passionate about but the only permission you need is from yourself! Take your turn and do something that fuels your creativity.
