I was a little shocked when my plants arrived because they looked so small. However, when I started planting out I could see that they had strong and healthy root systems. Usually when I plant something from a pot its growth stalls and I have to wait a while to see if it will restart or not. This time all the plants just seemed to burst straight into vigorous growth, confirming that the healthy roots are what matter!

I have been using Beth Chatto's Plants ever since moving into our new house in Herefordshire, three years ago.

I wanted a really traditional herbaceous look, plenty of bee-friendly flowers, all year-round colour, form & texture. I was replacing a rather over-the-hill 'Dry Garden' planting, utterly out of keeping with our location and rich soils. Beth Chatto's catalogue offered me dozens of top choices ~ geums, bergenias, astilbes, astrantias for example.

The plants have been universally big, meaty stock, robustly full of life and health, and offering the super colour, variety and year-round interest I needed. Trouble is, I cannot keep away!

The site is lovely and easy to use, endlessly helpful, even more endlessly tempting! Oh, and they offer an excellent alert service, notifying you when that must-have plant is back available.

5 Pennisetum orientale arrived in good shape, were planted a day later and now, several days on, look very happy.

Beth Chatto plants are always healthy, robust plants. I completely forgot about some for weeks after I planted them out, but they were doing fine...despite the fact that there had been hardly any rain. I do appreciate the plastic-free packing too.

I’ve bought a range of plants in the last six months, Hakonechloea, Penisetum, Dicentra, thymes, numerous epimediums and ferns etc. I lost a Ceratostigma over the winter during a hard frost (should have kept in the greenhouse and planted in spring, mea culpa) but everything else doing brilliantly. Fantastic range, healthy plants and great selections of species. Top five nursery for sure.

I very much appreciate the scope and variety of the plants presented for sale and which include species which are rarely stocked by mainstream garden centres. Providing an ecological context is also useful.

I have ordered several perennial plants from Beth Chatto this spring for my new cut flower bed. I am really delighted with all the plants: they arrived promptly, well packaged and in good condition. They are all now thriving in my garden! I will definitely be ordering from Beth Chatto plants again.

For a start, the website is beautful, with helpful suggestions as to what plants might go together. The plants themselves, look well nurtured, both on line and 'in person'; there's a sense that these are the offspring of plantspeople and not a factory farm. The postage may seem a little steep, but all is safely packaged and in recyclable material. My plants arrived in perfect condition. Bravo.

I ordered 16 plants in January, many of them in the half price sale. They arrived beautifully packaged as usual, but with almost half showing no above soil growth at all, which worried me a bit…I should not have doubted!
They are all now looking extremely healthy and the last reluctant one, a hosta, is emerging. Wonderful stock. I would not buy online from anyone else.

Beth Chatto nursery (and their garden) are among my absolute favourites. A brilliant independent nursery with plants that are clearly grown with love PLUS plants that are difficult to find anywhere. Highly recommend!!
