Beware of hidden fees and multiple contracts!

We have been with Yorkshire Payments for years now, being a busy business we were blissfully unaware of the extortionate interchange fees which were added on top of our "excellent rates".
We have had constant issues with our card terminal meaning its had to be rebooted numerous times per week which they were fully aware of and the issues were still ongoing despite sending us replacement machines to try.

We started looking around at other providers and had 3 separate providers come to look at our invoices to see what they could offer us and each one told us how extortionate our rates were with the hidden interchange fees added on.

We are now saving over £60 per month just on the rates themselves, this is before even taking into account the terminal rental which is now more than half the price for a machine which actually works!

We changed providers on 4/8/25 as our end date on our monthly invoice clearly stated 2/8/25 so we gave notice as per T&Cs, to then be greeted with a settlement figure from Yorkshire Payments of £114.

When we questioned this we were told this is for the separate agreement of the card terminal at £30/month which doesn't end until November! Yorkshire Payments were not willing to meet us in the middle over this figure, so we are now having to pay even more money for a terminal which we won't be using, and has caused us constant problems over the years.

Beware of their hidden interchange fees and multiple contracts with different suppliers! We thought our only contract was with Yorkshire Payments, turns out this was split into Global Payments, Paytek and Yorkshire Payments (all with different contract end dates!)

We understand that it is your right to change providers once your existing agreement has ended. However, if there was any remaining term on your contract, a settlement would be required to fulfil the minimum commitment.

Our cancellation policy aims to ensure fairness and consistency for all our customers, while also allowing us to manage resources effectively and we always strive to offer flexibility where possible, depending on the circumstances.

Regarding the multiple contracts, these are related to the acquiring bank (Global Payments) and the provision of a card terminal (provided by Yorkshire Payments, invoiced through Paytek). This dual-agreement setup is fairly standard in the industry.

Additionally, your acquiring bank offers transparent pricing, which allows us to keep card fees clear and straightforward. We prioritise transparency in all our processes to ensure you're always fully informed.

As we cannot provide specific details on your individual agreements and terminal issues within this response, we reached out directly with a detailed explanation via email on August 7th, 2025.

Great service by helpful people

Pleasant, helpful , efficient and very easy to deal with. I would fully recommend them. No hassle or constant sales calls but always there to help when you need them.

Well through this terrible year and when we get through the other side there will be suppliers that will supply my company and there will companies that don't Yorkshire payments will definitely be supplying my company they have been amazing allway through and a massive thanks to Sarah for all her help thanks peter

By far the worst company I’ve ever had…

By far the worst company I’ve ever had the misfortune to deal with. Shortly after installation on my website, customers began to experience problems paying. They either received an error message or the Yorkshire Payments (YP) portal just timed out. It went on for weeks, despite my calling and emailing, YP seemed unable to fix it and many of my emails went unanswered. I asked them to stop charges while they resolved it, no response, so I cancelled my DD. In the end, out of desperation with my business in chaos I returned to my previous ECOM supplier and continued trading with no issues. Then out of the blue I get an email (exactly 68 days after I first reported the issue). They’d sorted it all out, there was a URL missing!! What sort of company takes 68 days to realise that a URL is missing?? By this time there was no way I wanted anything to do with YP, and certainly will not ever be installing their payment system back on my website.
But I’m in a 4 year contract, and owe them over £1200, which despite their appalling service I must keep to apparently. So, they are forcing me to pay, harassing me by telephone and email threatening debt, arrears and action. Yorkshire payments don’t care about customers, and their technical support is shocking. I even contacted the MD, but he wasn’t interested either. It seems terrible customer care starts right at the top.

We had a persistent sales person called…

We had a persistent sales person called Barry who turned up on a number of occasions and was told we wasn't really interested but he continued to call and turn up at our premises. So one day he managed to talk this into a member of staff so I was asked to hear him out. So Barry explained how we could cancel the machine at anytime if it wasn't working out. So the contact was signed up once I had a little more time I managed to take a look throw things and wasn't happy so requested to cancel in less than 15 days. Guess what Barry was telling a lie your can't leave the contact. Yorkshire payments have been no help with resolving this issue and now requesting in excess of £1800 from me. I was asked to return the card terminal which I did on a signed for delivery which they are now denying receiving. It would seem there is no one part of Yorkshire payments that could lie straight in bed.

Yorkshire payments have been absolutely fantastic during (and proir to) this lockdown peiod. they contacted us to see how they could help us at the beginning and have been unbelievably helpful when our terminal failed on our first day back to trading. They are a reliable, friendly company, who provide an excellent service and are good value for money. TWe couldn't be happier with them. Please use this local company. We highly recommend them.

Great company, great team!

I really liked Yorkshire Payments approach and ethics when first contacted by James Slavin to introduce me to the company. The service I received in installing the machine was swift with one to one training from a super friendly engineer as part of the service. The whole change over to Yorkshire Payments was faultless.
