Money over pets
My experience is that they are after money more than anything. They push for things that aren't needed by using terms that seem important (spoken by another medic who did understand and challenged it).
I'm looking to switch to another vet even though this one is closer. I sweat every time I have to see them not knowing what they're going to charge.
Hidden costs
Vale Vets accidentally booked an appointment at the wrong time, delaying our dog's care for a week with no apology. They also failed to advise the cost of checking a small scratch on his ear, which turned out to be £70 (even as Health Club members!). Having used them for over 8 years, it's fair to say that this vet's service has been severely disappointing lately.
AVOID THIS CLINIC
AVOID THIS CLINIC. Vale vets Portishead. The lack of medical knowledge of the staff here is below anything I’ve ever seen. Their lack of capacity to admit when they commit mistakes it is unreal. If you want your animal to be treated well, I would recommend Langford hospital, Vets4Pets, Alexandra Vets, and there are multiple other places where they will not be glad to just take your money without having a clue how to treat your animal. I have met just one of their doctors, and seen the attitude of their clinical leads, and it was more than enough, to have an extremely bad experience with them. Almost 0 medical vet knowledge so for anyone who loves their pets I would not recommend to take their beloved pet here. My advice to people who love pets: AVOID THIS CLINIC
Generally good but some awful experieces.
Signed up to their VIP plan, I clarified with reception that if I was late picking up the treatment that I could collect it along with the next dose (I always keep 1 month of treatment in the cupboard spare). Turned up 4 days into the next calendar month and was told I could not collect missed treatments and that it was a "use it lose it" situation contrary to what they told me previously, I filed a complaint per their complaints procedure and they never responded to me. When I email to chase a response, they still ignore me.
They also outsourced their emergency vet without notifying us of the change, the outsourced vet service charged us £2600 to tell us our dog had kennel cough and provided no medication and instead told us to make a follow up with the day-time vet.
Jimmy
Our 10 week old puppy Jimmy, suddenly became very poorly. The care from the two vets who cared for him and the nursing staff was truly brilliant. He was kept in overnight on a drip etc and gradually pulled through. We cannot thank Vale Vets enough!!
Care more about money!!!
Few months ago we took our dog to Newport vets due to itching of the ear and his belly was red. They swapped his ear and said that he had yeast infection. Gave him antibiotics in the ear, swapped and tested. Prescribed aquopel and asked to see him in a month.
The minute he stopped taken the aquopel it started again.
Second visit to the vets, made the appointment and was told could be seen at 4.30. Attended the appointment and explained that his belly and ear, only to be told she couldn’t look at belly as it was a nurses appointment I had booked not a vet.
I pointed out ‘I’ had done no such thing that I rang and asked to speak to a vet and that the appointment had been made by reception. They then told me they didn’t have a vet on site as the vet had gone to the Cardiff branch. Again how was this my fault or
More importantly what on earth would of happened in an emergency with no vet on site.
I pointed out that I had researched aquopel and that it wasn’t helping get to the route course either. The nurse told me she would ring a vet and get some advice, she went ahead and swapped his ear and left us in the room for a good 10/15 mins. She came back in and said that she was really sorry she had swabbed and treated the wrong ear. Finally treated the correct one and took off to test, but I don’t know why it was tested because she had already treated it.
I was then told that they would give me aquopel again and that the vet would call me personally the following day to discuss the long term plan and treatment.
I asked for the flea treatment which was due to be told there was a shortage and that they would need to wait for the vet so that they could issue me with a year prescription so I could get it online at a cost of £32 for them to write it.
It’s been weeks and still no call came from the vet, or any follow up. I emailed to chase to be told good news vet had agreed the years prescription for flea treatment and had put him on repeat for aquapel. At this point I thanked them very much. What else is there to say? They haven’t listened, they haven’t followed up with promises, more importantly they haven’t even thought about seeing him again or discussing long term and it’s been very clear they care more about money than they do about animals in their care. Before they even make an appt their main concern is the £65 you pay before even crossing the door.
Only gave them one star as couldn’t give lower.
Having been with a chain vets for years with previous dog we had moved further away and so the Vale was closer and I liked the idea of independent, how wrong was I.
If you care about your animals, don’t take them to the Vale
In Newport.
I took my cat as he had an infected…
I took my cat as he had an infected foot and was prescribed antibiotics. When I got home realised that they had given my cat the wrong dose. Instead of a 50mg tablet, a 500mg tablet had been dispensed. I phoned up, and the receptionist apologised and the dose was changed.. I was told that this would be passed on to the manager immediately. I didn't hear anything, so I eventually phoned up Monday afternoon to be told the manager would send me an email. I was told that the tablets would not have done any harm and it would have been impossible to give to the cat. (My husband said he would have crushed the tablet if I hadn't checked) Although I appreciate that mistakes happen, I feel very discontented with the way I was treated. I just feel it is a money-grabbing business!
The best vet ever
The best vet ever, the staff is really friendly and helpful. ❤️
Dursley Vale Vets cat dental check up
Was at Dursley Vale vets until recently, I had left due to our family dog having been tossed in a freezer then Vale vets demanding money far beyond our limit a week after they had specifically told us to not worry about money UNTIL she had been cremated. Well this isn't about our dog being held for ransom but instead how my rescue 6y Sphynx has terrible teeth and the vets had the nerve to say they only needed a clean.
My Sphynx came from a pretty poor living condition, we were missing her previous medical records (if she even had them) so all we knew was that she was spayed. Not long after we got her, we noticed her teeth as one of them had turned black so we took her up to Vale vets to get an idea of the full extent of her dental problems. Vale had told us that her teeth weren't great but they'd only need a brush and sent us away with £60ish missing from our pockets and a complete lie about how bad this cat's teeth were, not long after this "diagnosis" we saw one of lower canines hanging out her mouth sideways. A couple of months pass and we take her to a new vets to get a second opinion, turns out her mouth is near ROTTING! Black tooth? Trauma and infected. Non-black 2 canines? Broken in half. Back teeth? Either brown and black or so infected they bleed at the slightest touch. This cat should not be able to eat hard food with how appalling her teeth and gums are, there is so much plaque that her gums are hidden by it. All her teeth must be removed due to how terribly they're all infected or broken.
I feel horrible because we'd basically been ignoring these horrible issues thinking she just needed a bit of toothpaste and some dental treats, little did we know this cat is on the brink of abscesses. How Vale looked at this cat's mouth and said "She's all right, just need some brushing" is beyond me. Never should have listened to them, maybe my cat could've kept some of her teeth if we acted quicker.
After all the money wringing were still suffering now, there was no way I was going to keep my cats up in that place. I can see if now, my Sphynx's mouth begins rotting after we ignored it from Vale saying everything is fine, Vale says they'll do surgery on her mouth and then demand an extortionate price for something that could've been avoided if they didn't lie to our face. My cats will not suffer because they rather want money, they've already squeezed money out of us for their own mistakes and already demanded obscene amounts of money from a grieving family they lied directly in the face of. I don't trust this place. I cannot recommend a place less for people who aren't made of money, the place is beyond greedy, seeing all the other reviews here have made me realize my situation is not unique.
Took my dog In as she was being ill
Took my dog In as she was being ill. We told them we were low income and had 1300£ they rang me and said it was 3000£, in the end we had to have her put to sleep, they told us to walk past reception and we could sort the bill out when our dog was back from the crematorium. A week later I had a call to say my dog was still there and wouldn't be sent off untill we had paid the huge bill, I was heart broken. My dog was left in the chiller when she deserved more than the service she got.... we have since moved our cats and now they want 200£ because of flea stuff we hadnt had, that I could of bought of amazon for quarter of the price.. I offered 5£ a week as we are still paying the 3000£ loan we had... instead of getting back to me, they went to a debt collection agency a few days after I had offered this amount.... now I'm paying a bill I don't owe and a debt collection agency bill, when I'd made an offer of payment.. VALE VETS DURSLEY ARE A TOTAL JOKE. it's all money money money and no care regarding your animal. I would recommend going else where because vale vets dursley are only about 1 thing and it's not the care of your furbabies. They done the same thing to us 3 yrs ago with my husbands british bull dog Winston. They was ment to ring when his ash's were back but they hadn't done so after 4 weeks. We tried to ring but wasn't told anything, next thing a debt collection agency was on our case..... at this point we still hadn't heard he was back. When we went up we was told he wasn't allowed to come home untill we had paid the final payment. Not only did they want us to pay the bill in full we had to pay the debt collection agency 189£ on top of that because they could t be bothered to ring us like we had agreed.... sad and angry... I will never go back to vale vets in dursley.. disgusting and unthoughtful vets. I've rang and emailed to complain but I have nothing back. Maybe if I can stop others going there and being hurt at least I will be helping someone by writing it on here....
Superb vet
Made the move from a previous vet 3 years ago - best thing I did. Richard (owner and vet) has been superb. He’s knowledgeable, takes the utmost care and attention after a serious operation for my dog. All the reception staff know my dog very well and take time to make a fuss over her. Would highly recommend.
Extortionate practice
Dursley branch. Extortionate practice. Charged £1100 for 24 hours obvs for my cat. Poor diagnosis, never saw the same vet twice. All very money centred rather than animal centred. They are run by a multinational company now. I left soon after.
Greedy
Cullompton.
I was quoted a price, and then it increased by in excess of £300 despite no further treatment or services taking place.
Nothing I can do about it. They could not care less about the emotional and financial distress caused to me.
Beware!
T.J Black Labrador
We were recommended to Vale Vets with our dog T.J for a gastro issue. From arriving in the car park to be met with a perfect looking building and plenty of parking then into a reception area that was roomy and separate areas for both dogs and cats with reception staff that were totally lovely and professional in their approach.
We were introduced to Phil Fox-Manning our vet who took the time to listen and explain absolutely everything to us making us both feel at ease with what was a very stressful time.
All the staff were lovely and the communication throughout the day was brilliant.
I would recommend this vet to anyone who is looking for a truly excellent service from the first time visiting to ongoing treatment for their pets.
awful service
I cannot believe the awful service we have had from Vale vets in Tiverton and Collumpton .
Our dog was involved in an accident out of hours in January, neither practice would help us, apparently no on call vet!!!
Two months later after extensive surgery with another practice he suffered a stoke.
He was registered with the Tiverton practice but they wouldn’t come out saying it was too far!!!! Obviously not too far to register him and take our money…. It took us four hours to find another practice that would come and put him to sleep. We couldn’t take him in as he was a large dog that we physically couldn’t pick up.
All together it was a traumatic experience and I wouldn’t recommend theses vets to anyone.
Would never change my vet
My British Bulldog had an operation on her eyes just before Christmas (2023) at the Newport Vale Veterinary Centre. The operation was a success and the aftercare received from Richard was second to none! She was also spayed by Richard two years earlier and again, I was very impressed with the service and aftercare. All the staff are friendly and helpful and I cannot recommend them enough. I would never take my bulldog from this vets!
Great service
Took our beautiful little puppy Chewie here after we thought he had eaten chocolate. We took him straight up after speaking on the phone. We were seen immediately and given options as to what needed to happen next. The vet was very professional, put our minds at ease throughout and was very lovely. Very professional service and very positive experience for ourselves and little Chewie. Huge thank you to the staff.
Horrendous experience!
Horrendous experience! Vale Dursley
Couldn’t diagnose my dogs reason for pain/discomfort. Just gave her an injection and told me they’d keep her in to “monitor” her but would cost an addition £300+ to do so.
My dog was in there for 30-45mins on a bank holiday, they charged me £280 just for the “consultation” for out of hours being a bank holiday. They prescribed pain relief tablets, which caused my dog to collapse on her back end as they dosage was x3 over what it should have been after seeing another vet elsewhere!! Appalling service! No compassion or care for the animal only interested in how much money they can get out of you! I have a bill just under £500 from them.
My dog has been unwell since being overdosed of medication she is now getting treatment elsewhere, I will be seeking legal advice!
Quick to take your money not quick to respond when your dog dies
The team were friendly and got my dog Molly seen quickly. They charged £2600 for a c-section and released her within a few hours. She didn’t seem herself when I went to collect her, very floppy, no wagging tail and when I mentioned this they said it was the medication. Within hours of getting her home, Molly sadly threw up everywhere and died. She was 3 years old and in perfect health. I called Vale Vets to speak to the manager who was not there. A vet came on the phone and said, that it may have been a blood clot but unfortunately was dismissive and defensive. I said I now have 5 puppies here under 24 hours old with no mum. I have already paid £2600 for a few hours work and would they as a good will gesture look after the puppies for a few days whilst they are critically young. She said she will speak to the manager and get back to me ‘Monday or Tuesday’ (which is 3/4 days after the operation which was on Friday). At 1pm Monday, having not heard from them I called and explained that now 2 of the 5 puppies had died and would they please have the manager call me back. The receptionist (who was lovely) said she’s in a meeting but I have asked and she said bring them in. I said that’s fine but will they look at them for free as I have already paid £2600 and Molly was dead within hours so something must’ve gone gravely wrong. The poor receptionist said they would discuss this with me but could not make any guarantees re waving the fee. I took the puppies to another vet.
It is now Wednesday at 3pm and I have just received an email from them, likely because they saw my review on line. Predictably they said it wasn’t there fault and I should basically get lost.
Whilst they all seem pleasant and competent, when something goes wrong, they are no where to be seen. Not even a call to say sorry for your loss. The most abysmal aftercare on earth.
After posting the above review I get this pathetic response.
“We take customer feedback very seriously and we are sorry that you are dissatisfied with any aspect of our services. We ask any client with concerns relating to the treatment of their pet to contact us directly either by phone or email. Our Practice Director will try and contact you directly.”
Well guess what?! I did ring and no-one would speak to me so here we are.You
Rude Receptionist
I’ve been taking my dog here for a little while and before it moved locations, the staff has always been friendly. I called up today to book an appointment for my dog and the receptionist was rude. She asked me what day I was available and I simply asked for a few days and she responded “you want to leave it that long, do ya?” Like excuse me? I’d love to take my dog in as soon as possible but I have a full time job and a low income? As soon as she answered the phone, I told her my dogs name and she said ‘ok?’ Like i was stupid. So rude and I wish I had asked for name.
