Fully-impartial, it is the first ombudsman to be focused solely on the automotive sector, and self-regulates the UK’s motor industry through its comprehensive Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved Codes of Practice. Over 7,500 businesses, are accredited to one or more of the Codes covering new cars, sales, vehicle warranties, and servicing and repair. These drive even higher standards of work and service, and give consumers added protection, peace of mind and trust during the vehicle purchase and ownership experience.

Very helpful and very polite and understanding

Was really helpful with the information they gave about the garage I’m having issues with. Also got sent an email that the person I spoke to said it would help if I took it to a small claims court. Unfortunately I still do know if I will go that far yet as there has been a review about them when they were at a different location under a different name that they don’t turn up and that customer was left with all the court costs as the changed name and location. The motor ombudsman was very helpful as was citizens advice giving me all the information about the consumer rights act 2015. Also the website (business companion. Info then go to the section selling and supplying goods.

Disappointed

Showed no indication that they’d read any evidence submitted. Didn’t communicate at all and took ages. Felt biased towards the garage. Waste of time.

Takes time but worth it…

I contacted The Motor Ombudsman following an issue with our car servicing dealership. Although it took a long time after our initial online submission for the Ombudsman to take up our case (they must receive thousands of submissions a month), once we were assigned a Case Administrator our issue was dealt with quickly and resolved fairly. Supply them with as much info as you can - pictures, invoices, emails and any other information you think might be of use.

Great live action.

I was having trouble understanding the online registration process, partly due to some shortcomings in the system.
I phoned and spoke to Philip who talked me through the process and emailed a link for me to use. He is an excellent listener, and performed the registration process on the phone.

Misapplied the law, ignored evidence, and wasted nearly two years

My experience with The Motor Ombudsman has been appalling and has wasted nearly two years of my life with no meaningful resolution.

From the start, I gave them clear evidence and pointed them to the relevant consumer law in plain English. Instead of properly dealing with that, the adjudicator, Nick Steele, repeatedly got the law wrong, ignored key points I raised, and kept repeating the same incorrect position even after I sent legal references and supporting documents showing why it was wrong.

When I challenged the decision and made a formal complaint, the response was shallow and failed to deal with the actual issues I had raised. At one point, I was even sent an email that had clearly been copied and pasted from someone else’s case (talk about GDPR breach), which completely destroyed any confidence I had in the process.

The whole thing felt like a box-ticking exercise rather than an independent or competent dispute resolution service. Instead of helping resolve the dispute, The Motor Ombudsman dragged it out and forced me to take other action.

Based on my experience, I would not trust The Motor Ombudsman to properly understand or apply consumer law, or to deal with evidence and complaints in a careful or professional way.

I am now in the middle of court proceedings anyway because of how badly this was handled.

The young man was helpful and…

The young man was helpful and supportive regarding my situation.
However I was disappointed as my question was not fully answered as to where was my letter written in January 2026 and I had not received any acknowledgement of my letter. He could not answer this.
Also, why provide an address when no one mans the office? What do you do when some people do not have access to IT and/or computers? They write and no one bothers to write back? Is that really a good service
