The Gym Group Dundee Filthy and Cold

Recently rejoined and people need to be aware of the serious decline in standards at this gym.

The cardio machines have significantly reduced in number and when you can get on a machine, many are full of sweat from previous users. In fact a female user apologised to me earlier this week for leaving the machine covered in sweat and she said it was a disgrace that the cleaning stations were removed.

The changing rooms are absolutely filthy and not a single cleaner seen on the gym floor all week along with any managers as the office door was locked all week.

It has been absolutely freezing cold outside all week and incredibly this gym has had the heating switched off every day this week.

The personal trainers are wearing multiple garments with one even wearing a pukka jacket while training a well wrapped up female client!!!

Thank god there is no contract as I will be leaving soon and in no hurry to return.

Robust cleaning regimes are still in place and we continue to pump in 100% fresh air ventilation, day and night, we clean on a daily basis, including cleaning of all equipment and gym facilities with anti-viral products. We encourage members to bring in a sweat towel to use after they have used a piece of equipment.
Having cleaning stations has resulted in a significant increase in the amount of paper waster and we are focussed on minimising our waste as part of our commitment to Net-Zero.

We are proud to be the very first Carbon Neutral Gym Chain in the UK. This is just a part of our efforts, for example we are also taking steps to reduce the amount of single use plastics in our vending machines.

Shocking Experience …

The gym lacks basic hygiene following the removal of cleaning stations for customers, lacks regular cleaning as very dirty in gym and gents changing rooms, the locks on the lockers don't work and are never repaired plus the heating in the gym is turned off many days in the winter even when very cold outside.

Today some PTs dressed like they were about to play Carnoustie Golf Course on a very cold, windy and rainy day wearing multiple hoodie tops and even bobble hats.

The refurbishment earlier in the year resulted in the loss of 50% of Cross Trainers and Bikes within the cardio section. The new Cross Trainers and Bikes are cheap models very inferior to the equipment replaced.

The gym no longer charges budget prices with the price now £22 per month and has went downhill rapidly over the year turning into the worst value for money gym in Dundee.

The Gym is really good generally

The Gym is really good generally. Only complaint I have is there is only one smith machine which leads to issues around waiting or not getting to use it at all. Staff seem friendly enough, however don’t really engage with everyone I imagine they gravitate toward those who attend classes or use a PT. Overall it’s a great gym.

Disaster before I even get in the door.

Well, can’t believe the change in the gym since the last time I came. I joined this gym a few years ago when it was new and honestly it was great, yes equipment is a bit basic but the atmosphere and gym team was great and always helpful.

I have been away for a while and have recently came back to dundee. My friend is a regular gym goer at this gym and has been a member since it opened. He agreed to take me and we would start going together however fast forward a few years and Jesus peeps, what an experience before I even get in the door.

Firstly I’ll hold my hands up I purchased the off peak membership and tried to get in at peak time - the PT at the door explained this to me so me and my friend agreed that he would send me the money to sign up to the normal membership so that I can still train today. When agreeing this I was never told by the PT standing with us that he would still not allow us in the building even with the normal 24/7 membership.

So we fill out all the stuff on the screens at the front door ( the disinterested PT at this point has already gone back inside to sit on his phone at the front desk) I get the notification that I have now set up the normal membership along with proof payment. The code hadn’t activated however my friend said that’s normal and that it takes a wee while for the codes to activate. So I press the assistance button at the front door, only for the same PT to then tell me it doesn’t matter I still cannot enter even with the proof of purchase directly in-front of his eyes.

The PT couldn’t really care less he was coming up with no suggestions on what to do or anything apart from phone customer service and there’s nothing else he can do (apart from allow me access to a gym I’ve just signed up for). So £43 on memberships and half an hour later my friend had to drop me off home. My friend has been a member of this gym since it opened and has a good rapport with the management.

So he gave them a message to explain what had just happened as we both felt the experience we just received was so poor and bare in mind I have a £25 membership I cannot use for the reason that it’s “not fair on other members” however they seemed just as disinterested as the PT as one of the management opened the message and ignored my friend while the other didn’t even bother to open the message. Safe to say very very poor especially when the dealing is between friends and members.

So on Friday we agreed to go again. At the end of the day I’ve missed out on a week of training even though I have paid my monthly membership to train at the gym so there is no reason why I am not allowed in. The code worked thankfully however the manager decided to stay in his office and not even come over to ask if we had sorted the issue out or even acknowledge the issue had happened. Now my friend is a regular and as stated previously has a good report with the management the gym was also not that busy so it’s not as if they didn’t notice us.

Overall very very very poor experience. From what was a great gym with great staff such as Calum and Andy it’s a shame to see that the standards are dropping to PTs that can’t be bothered to help and management that don’t want to know. The PT was a bald guy someone I had never seen before in the gym and didn’t even introduce himself when assisting us so I never got his name.

Lucky my friend gives me a lift to the gym and that this gym is the closest gym to us or they would have had 2 less members after this shambles.

The gym is good and I do enjoy going…

The gym is good and I do enjoy going but I do believe that the gym can benefit to having some more equipment as well as some other equipment that is not available in the gym as at times it cam be very busy which makes it difficult to get access to machines you are needing to for that day depending on your workout schedule.

Gym Etiquette

The gym itself is fine - spacious & well kitted out. Despite gym etiquette being clearly posted on the walls too many users are ignoring it. Some users occupy work stations and on the completion of their set remain there texting on their phones depriving other users from utilising the equipment. Disappointing staff never seem to feel the need to remind these people of the etiquette which is clearly displayed on the walls.

Excellent Staff and Facilities, poor Customer service

When I signed up to The Gym, Dundee it stated that it was a 24/7 gym. They had a deal on offer for 50% off for your first month. 2 guesses as too what my complaints are regarding.
Firstly, the discount did not go through and I was charged the full £20.98. Not the worst thing in the world, but still a bit misleading. Secondly, the gym is not longer 24 hours every day of the week, and only recently has advertising for this changed. I set up my account on the 26th of April, yet the second payment came out half way through May. I wrote a complaint and received a generic template response. When I wrote back, I was informed that as I had made contact again they were closing my case, this and for an overpayment. I argued that since the opening times were reduced, the half price introductory offer was a tad misleading as we were not receiving the full services. I was then informed that I'd be being charged £15 as they were unable to take a payment, again, this was down to a lack of communicatin regarding the payment dates. When I tried to rectify this, I was informed that my account was registered from the 7th of April, 19 days earlier than i initially signed up.
There is little in place to enforce cleaning of equipment inbetween sets.
Apart from this, I would be remisce if I didn't mention how kind, helpful and accommodating some of the staff are. Sarah is emphatic, positive and incredibly helpful. The facilities are also excellent, it can get very busy but there is usually more than enough choice of machine to go around, even at peak times and with reduced machines/social distancing in place. You get a lot for your money. The Gym is kept remarkably clean and apart from financial disputes, I have no complaints. The personal/staff side and the running of the gym are brilliant and I have no complaints in that regard. However, as I have not received any compensation or apology or even admission of error from any facet of the gyms hierarchy, the 3*, although harsh, is my verdict .
