The hotel looks stunning from afar but…

The hotel looks stunning from afar but is in dire need of refurbishment. We booked a 2-night weekend stay for a milestone birthday celebration, and had planned to splash out on a decent meal in the Grill Room. There was zero atmosphere - the tables were laid out like a school dinners hall. 2 of our party ordered steaks and these appeared within 3 minutes of the order having been taken. Grey and tasteless. My pasta dish was literally spaghetti floating in a watery substance. I complained and was given an alternative meal. When we argued that the steaks had obviously been pre-cooked we were assured this was not the case, and the 2 diners were offered a free pint of beer. Our room was lovely (we'd booked a feature room) but the rest of our party booked standard doubles (advertised as "fit for a king or queen"). These were dark and dingy and not as described. The saving grace was the singer in the Gin Bar on the Sat night (25/4) - he was excellent. But we'll not be back.

Making Memories?

We booked 2 nights on a Making Memories package. On arrival we were allocated room 202. It was dull, overlooked an annex, the toilet was immediately in front of a window and the wardrobe doors were barely attached to their hinges. I complained at reception and Nicola, went out of her way to find us an alternative. Room 122 looked out to the hills, was freshly decorated and had an enormous bathroom. Thanks Nicola, you rescued our stay from what would have been a 1 star to a 4 star.

Poor quality of room

The room was poorly lit. Bathroom door handle fell off and took 24 hrs to get it sorted. Couldn't close over Bathroom door in the interim. Radiator didn't work and room was frozen. We were on a much needed break after a stressful few months and unfortunately this hotel was not very good. Staff were lovely and food was good.

Birthday treat

Easy booking system and good price for 2nght bb n dinner on 1st night.
Good email communication regards room requests as i have a mobility issue.
Room perfect with front of hotel outlook and adapted walk in shower/ bathroom.
Hotel busy with lots of activities on. Staff very helpful and friendly and quick check in n out.
Disappointing was the set up for meal n breakfast as main Grill Room closed so alternative areas allocated.
Meal dinner in room with no atmosphere and breakfast in main function ballroom which was chaotic.
No prior notice given re food venues.
Meal at night too rich for our taste so alot of waste. Would have preferred bar meal choices.
Breakfast was no usual service with food choice layout poor and food overcooked.
Was due to go to hotel again in March but now changed this.
Been to hotel many times and never had issue with food but this time we did.

Not as good as it once was.

Have been going to the Hydro for over 20 years now and sadly have seen it decline. The hotel is now part of a group that owns several properties and it appears that management is spreading itself a bit thin.

The hotel itself is very pleasant - my elderly mother enjoys looking over the front green from the cafe - though some parts appear a bit tired. On each time (3 to be precise) in recent years, I've treated my mother to a stay, there have beem complications. On one occasion, I'd booked a room and spa treatment for her. Room was fine however the spa treatment had been pencilled in for the sister hotel in Crieff! The family room I was given a couple of years ago was very cramped - extra beds squeezed into a standard double room.

However, because of the pool and the cafe, I intended to take the family there for an important birthday next yeat. Eight people over 3 or 4 rooms. However, it now appears that the Hydro only accepts bookings for TWO nights. This is not convenient for us and obviously makes it very expensive. Needless to say, we are going to another hotel nearby.

Further to that is the news that the Hyrdo management company has been underpaying staff and was condemned by the HMRC. Not good.

Weekend spa stay

Weekend spa stay with afternoon tea found out just before i had a gluten problem they were so good and changed the menu so I got my afternoon tea and it was very good. Staff are so friendly and nothing is a bother. Made us feel very welcome

The staff have turned Peebles around

The staff have turned Peebles around. We have been going as a family for many years, enjoying the independent nature and culture that a privately owned hotel brings. When it was bought by Crieff Hydro in 2014, there was a definite dip in family friendly service, the activities were stripped down to a bare minimum and the food was over priced. However, it now is back to where it was, and back to why we loved Peebles - delicious food, gorgeous rooms, fun activities and a great Ceilidh . This has undoubtedly been turned around by the brilliant leadership of the Manager Caroline, along with the staff she has trained in her ethos of a personal, friendly, caring service for every guest, whether they be 8 or 80. Thank you Peebles for a brilliant Easter weekend xx

Beautiful, charactful and vast building.

Beautiful, vast vicinity ( it vaguely reminds me of the beautiful Stanley Hotel in Colorado, USA). The most diverse, excellent quality breakfast, plenty of choice and fresh fruit. Helpful, organised and friendly staff throughout. The spa was fantastic.

Had a lovely weekend at the Hydro…

Had a lovely weekend at the Hydro hotel. You can’t help being impressed with the staircase, when you walk into the hotel, perfect for photographs.
The staff were very helpful, I forgot my phone charger, the staff on reception, went out of their way to find one for me, we were met by the manager, as she, Caroline, happened to be there, at the time we were checking in.
The staff in the dining room, Colin and his staff, were just as helpful, rooms clean, had a front facing room, with beautiful views over the fells, and lucky enough to wake-up to snow the following morning.
We walked down the bustling high street the following day, and decided to call into their sister hotel The Park, for lunch, that didn’t disappoint either. I recommend this hotel

Complaint not acted upon because of business interests

My overall stay at the Hydro (Room 64) was fine.
This was marred on Tuesday the 24th Sept in the Miller Restaurant by an obnoxious loudmouth female.
I was seated back to back with this person, who seemed to be conducting a business meeting with a few others. I cannot over emphasise the loudness of her voice and she seemed to be doing most of the talking. My impression was of someone who needed to be seen and heard. That was not the first time that she had been seen and heard at an equally loud level, this was at breakfast the previous day.On the night in question, my wife and I left the restaurant early just to get away from the relentless droning of her conversation, before we left I commented to her that she and her associates had ruined our evening, we were on holiday and had not anticipated spending the evening in such an atmosphere. On hearing our complaint the persons in question thought it very funny and laughed at us through a very halfhearted apology. We left the restaurant angry and upset at our treatment.
We immediately went to the reception area to complain to the staff there as we had discovered, through loud conversation, the female in question had an office in the hotel and we were told by the receptionist that this female brings business to the hotel. As far as we are aware no action was taken to deal with our complaint.
On checking out the next day our complaint was reiterated to the receptionist, who apologised, on paying for the meal at this time there was no offer of a reduction for the lack of enjoyment of the meal and the ruination of our last evening in the hotel.

Went for activities on 4.9.24.included air rifle shooting,bow and arrow,and seeing the alpacas,with option of walking them.first time doing these activities,but the instructor Sam was a lovely young man .he was very professional,and talked us through every stage of each activity.health and safety was a priority.he made each thing fun ,and competitive which added to the excitement of a new activity.will certainly be returning,and hopefully Sam will be our instructor again.he is an asset to the company for sure.would recommend.

Afternoon Tea

John Murphy - where do I even begin. It was only a short couple minute interaction we had with him but by gosh did it make our day. Serving us the afternoon tea package John did it in a way which created such a memorable experince. By using his knowledge of the dishes and communication skills he presented our food in a poetic way which is something we will never forget. He made our trip ! Peebles Hydro hold on to him at all cost - he’s a gem !!!

I have just returned from a long…

I have just returned from a long weekend at this hotel after attending a freinds wedding, what I can say other than brilliant, great staff great food great venue great rooms & facilities. If I could give this hotel 10 stars I would.
One special person needs a mention though...John this man does not stop and was a brilliant host and made the day/night run smoothly and can not thank him enough.. if the owners of this hotel read this give that man a pay rise!

Brilliant weekend, brilliant hotel brilliant place.
We will be back thank you

Absolutely magical!

We used to holiday at Peebles Hydro in the summer when I was a kid (loved it!)

Dragged my Australian family over for the Hogmanay this year. Stayed four days. Absolute heaven and bliss. It did not disappoint.

Beautiful hotel, amazing food (that just kept coming!), great facilities and entertainment (my kids loved the ceilidhs!) ... but the staff were the hotel's USP. Whoever is managing, training and retaining those staff is doing a fantastic job. So friendly, helpful and warm - made us feel really loved and special. Hope we can go back again one day.

Where's my money??

Myself and my husband stayed at the Peebles Hydro from 3rd to 5th Jan 2024. When we checked in my card was charged £50 incase of any further charges etc... We made no charges to our room during our stay and checked out as normal on the 5th. Today is the 19th of January and my card has still not been refunded. I've phoned the hotel twice and was told it can take up to 2 weeks??? In addition I was charged twice for a spa treatment I had while staying there. I had paid (in November) for 2 treatments during my stay (3, 4th Jan) but after I received one of them I noticed that my card had been charged again (marked pending). When I mentioned this to the lady who carried out my treatment she told me the charge probably wouldn't go through - it did. I then sent an email to the spa (Pure Spa) detailing what had happened with attachments showing my previous payments and current charge, but received nothing back.. not even a 'sorry we'll look into this'. This morning I phoned the hotel again and got told they would look into it... very disappointing service. We certainly won't be returning to this hotel.

Time to stop the declining standards

We have been visiting Peebles Hydro on several occasions over the past 10-15 years, and been visiting their main managing company, Creiff Hydro for almost 40 years. The decline in standards over the period has been consistent to such an extent that we really are getting to go somewhere else. Our recent (January 2024 stay) saw yet another decline, and I really think that I'd rather spend an extra £5 a night (which would stop the decline in standards) or go somewhere else. Unfortunately, after this stay I would advise that one of the basic things was unacceptable, the toilet paper. Where they get it from O have no idea, because even Aldi or Lidl basic loo paper is 100% better, and I would go so far as to say that if you are going to Peebles Hydro then take you own loo paper. Our party, six guests, all agree.

If I could give negative stars I really…

If I could give negative stars I really would.

We we given key cards to a foosty stale and extremely dusty room.

Not luxury at all. After having to speak to two house keeping managers and a deputy manager - we then we sent the manager. She couldn’t have been more rude, or impolite and unprofessional. I have chased this up with customer care, - who don’t care. They empathise but do nothing to compensate and resolve our disappointment. We were given a small discount off our stay. But it was ruined and we feel it didn’t reflect our very disappointing experience

The leisure area - where do I start - rancid smelling costume drier, manky changing rooms, full or small areas of mould, hair and dust. Signage has been moved and renewed not areas not repainted. Very very tired … better off with a visit to your local swimming pool! Probably safer!

The gym - mould fest! We went to run on the treadmills under a vast area of black mould ! I wish I could include pictures!
Honestly you wouldn’t believe! I work in health care and told them it should be closed.

In a nutshell , avoid avoid - there are other nicer hotels in the area , Barony Castle, Cardrona, Stobo,

Beware as the Park hotel is one of their sister hotels !!

Booked for 2 night stay to celebrate…

Booked for 2 night stay to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary disappointed is an understatement the view from the bedroom overlooking an old roof that what we could see out of the filthy windows I’m sure Tarzan was swinging from the cobwebs I only wish I could post the photos the bed was comfortable and the breakfast was lovely but didn’t warrant a second night stay so we booked out on the second day definitely wouldn’t recommend .

Shoddy behaviour

1. we did a review which they said was for Trustpilot - it hasn't appeared... hence the follow up.
2.we booked dinner bed and breakfast for 28th February 2023. It was worth turning up for the dinner and breakfast. The room was in the middle of a building site with none stop noise from 10pm to 1am. At first we thought there may be a celebration , but expected it to die down. It didn't. We rang reception at midnight and were told they would check out where the noise was coming from. ha ha ha.
we rang again at about 20 past when we had done our own investigating. We were told they could hear it but didn't know where it was coming from! (rolling with laughter emoji here x6) We offered our assistance with their research and pointed out the work men in the rooms directly below with their sound system, boots on bare floors and the banging doors as they moved from room to room. About 1am the noise stopped. Not the restful stay we planned. Shouldn't have to ask the obvious questions about building works and peaceful surroundings when they advertise that's what they offer! IMHO.
3. At check out they receptionist was aware of the night time events and said she had applied a discount- we didn't check until later; she had deducted the staff tips of 7.22. The dining room staff where the best part. We would not recommend or go back to this place. Shoddy behaviour.
