Beautiful hotel, stunning setting
This beautiful small hotel is simply magical, I just fell in love with it. Everything about it and the old town of Sassi, where it is, is like being in another time and place-wonderful. Marie Theresa who owns this absolute gem is so helpful. The rooms are the old cave houses, and our room had once been the home of a lady called Maria. It was beautiful, spacious, spotlessly clean, big comfy bed with extra blankets (if needed), great shower, tea/coffee making facilities, and a fabulous view from our pretty terrace across the gorge to the very first cave dwellings dating back 3-4000 years ago.
The breakfast was excellent with lots of options. The hotel doesn’t offer evening meal but there are plenty of good restaurants within very easy walking distance.
A little word of advice, if you do book this wonderful hotel make sure you ask for the porter to meet you, not just to carry the luggage but so you know where the hotel is. There are lots of steps in the Sassi part of Matera, but because most of them are shallow it makes for surprisingly easy walking…..generally.
