Hardwood Giant Calgary
My parents hired this company to install vinyl flooring on the main floor of their residence. They were advised that vinyl could not be installed on the stairs and that hardwood stairs with a custom stain would be required. After agreeing, they were asked for a deposit.
Be aware that if this company negotiates a contract in your home they require a Prepaid Contractor licence to collect deposits. I have confirmed through the Service Alberta online portal and by phone that this company does not hold the required licence to collect deposits.
The vinyl flooring installation was eventually completed, following shipping delays, and was generally acceptable.
The hardwood stair installation, however, has been extremely problematic. There were multiple delays, upon visiting my parents and seeing the install we suggested they should get a second opinion based on the quality of work to date, We did have an independent third party inspect and the findings were very concerning.
The inspection identified multiple code deficiencies and workmanship issues on both stair flights, including:
Tread nosings not compliant with Alberta residential stair code requirements
Bullnose overhangs varying significantly from tread to tread
Tread depths below minimum code requirements in some areas
Poor workmanship including sanding scratches, gaps, pieced treads, and mismatched filler
Damaged and cracked railing posts and unsafe gaps in railings
These deficiencies created safety concerns, particularly as the home is occupied by seniors who rely on the railings for stability.
After the inspection was completed, the company demanded final payment within 24 hours and dismissed the inspection report on the basis that they were not present during it.
Based the inspection findings, and how concerns were handled, I would strongly recommend that consumers verify licensing and proceed with caution before engaging this or any company.
