Having to take Halliwell Jones to…
Having to take Halliwell Jones to court.
Beware of the known Drivetrain failure by BMW on the new M5 purchased only 4 months ago. They have had my brand new car for the last 8 weeks without fixing the known DME Drivetrain failure. Having now to take them to court for the return of all my funds. Below is the commonly known historic problem, yet they continue to state they know nothing of this. BMW are the worst car manufacturer in the industry!
1. The "Dreaded" Drivetrain Failure & Software Glitches
The most common electronics-related issue logged by owners of the new M5 is a sudden "Drivetrain Malfunction" warning on the iDrive screen, often accompanied by limp mode or the car locking itself into a single gear (such as 3rd gear). [1, 2, 3]
• The Cause: BMW tracking and technical service bulletins indicate this is heavily tied to an implementation and communication error within the OBD diagnostics and transmission management software. The DME registers data mismatches between the V8 engine and the hybrid electric motors. [1, 2, 3]
• The Fix: BMW rolled out an official integration software update (I-Level patch 03/2026.39 or newer) specifically designed to rewrite the transmission code and stop the DME from throwing false-positive drivetrain faults
2. OBD Diagnostic Implementation Flaws (SIB 65 14 26)
BMW issued official Service Information Bulletins (including SIB 65 14 26) affecting the new M5. [1]
• The Fault: Control units (including the DME) suffer from an internal software tracking glitch where stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL/Check Engine Light) refuse to clear automatically. Even after a physical issue is fixed, the DME permanently holds onto the warning light until a dealer performs a hard system flash. [1]
3. Tuning & DME Locking Constraints
If you are looking at the DME from a tuning or aftermarket perspective, the electronic architecture is highly restrictive. [1, 2]
• The Fault: The new M5 utilizes highly secure MG1CS201 Bosch DMEs. They feature strict bench-lock software protections that cause immediate communication connection timeouts or terminal diagnostic bricking if traditional OBD flashing tools attempt to override them. Specialist tuners have to use inline resistors just to wake up the bootloader interface without triggering a permanent DME lockout fault code
Mini Clubman JCW
Bought a used top end Mini Clubman JCW from Ed Reader yesterday and couldn't be happier with the whole experience. From the initial inquiry to driving off the forecourt, Ed’s communication was spot on throughout. The car was absolute perfection and exactly as described in the listing, no hidden surprises or fluff. Negotiation was smooth, fair, and refreshingly positive. Ed is a top chap, incredibly helpful, and genuinely great to deal with. If you're looking for a Mini, I can't recommend Ed enough!
Buying a mini aceman
Called into Wilmslow branch wanting more info about the mini aceman. Spoke to Ed Reader who was very knowledgeable and went through the main features of the car. Nothing seemed too much trouble. We searched available cars to purchase immediately and found a great ex-demo. He kept me informed during the time between purchasing and collection. Explained about charging the car and different levels of power from tge public chargers. Very pleased with the service given would recommend Ed.
Used Mini Purchase
Just purchased a used Mini Cooper from Wilmslow after buying a Mini Aceman from Chester last year.
Very pleased with the sales process, Kieran was excellent, from my viewing visit to collecting the car today. Very knowledgeable and walked me through the car controls before I set off home.
A pleasant experience all round 5*
Used Vehicle purchase
I called to enquire about a vehicle that was for sale and initially all seemed to go as expected. Personalised video etc all arrived from James (all though it didn't contain some of the specific information I requested!) further conversations took place (they couldn't get near my part ex price or finance deals) however I made an offer for the vehicle, queue the standard car sales quote "I need to speak to my manager", then no contact for three days from James, and to date still no call. I called them to re present my offer, in Kenny's defence he at least managed a call back to advise that there was no room for negotiation, and that (of course) some one else was looking at the car tomorrow and did I want him to update me with if they bought it!!! Which I politely declined. I thought these antiquated "Dell Boy" esque sales tactics would not be employed by a prestige car marque in 2026. Suffice to say I wouldnt purchase a valve cap from these people, and after 16 years of BMW ownership this service has persuaded me to move to the dark side purchasing an Audi where I encountered a thouroughly proffesional service from start to finish!!
Appalling customer service
Appalling customer service! Having no luck via email I then phoned 8th Jan with intentions to spend 34k,promised to call me back within the hour and still awaiting! To add to the insult they dropped the price by a further 1k. Wife gutted as we’ve been searching for a BRG S for weeks. Also asked to speak with a complaints manager and still waiting for that call too.
Worst ever !
Worst experience of spending £28K ever
Really smart showroom, but that’s where it ends.
Sales rep Kieron skill set lies in exhibiting a disinterested and basically unhelpful approach to the customer. Probably be better suited to a position in the DWP or Local Government where he could use his attitude to best effect. There he’d be able to subject the helpless end user to his ‘take it or leave it’ attitude in a more fitting environment.
Having spent just shy of £30K I never received a word of thanks. Instead his approach throughout was intent on portraying that he was doing me a massive favour by trading in. That’d be quite impressive if it wasn’t also delivered in his unique unhelpful and almost argumentative manner.
In terms of the sale itself he managed to get through the tedium of explaining the various options and the vehicle itself in a bored monotone and robotic fashion, presenting as someone who would rather be anywhere else than in his company uniform.
Maybe some customer focus training might help? I don’t know, but from my experience of his distinct absence of interpersonal skills, I think it’s probably too late.
The entire experience has left me feeling unhappy and upset. Surely treating yourself to a new car should be a pleasant experience?
Definitely not in this case.
My advice would be to avoid this smart looking but sadly lacking dealership completely.
Very very poor
Paid almost £20 to have nitro tyres. Gave me my car back with front tyres dangerously under inflated. Got a refund which was the least they could do for a service I didn't fully receive. All I got was a sorry for giving car back in dangerous condition. Avoid.
Avoid Halliwell Jones
Investigated a coolant leak costing £156 for diagnostics. Master technicians said there was no issue.
4 months later, massive coolant leak problem due to wheel arch liner rubbing on the radiator over time. Charged £1500 for something that should have been covered under warrantyor at least spotted 4 months ago. Avoid Halliwell Jones at all costs, there is better franchise or even independents.
Appalling Customer Experience.
I recently bought an approved used MINI from the Wilmslow showroom. Being based in Scotland I made an online enquiry and the salesman called back very quickly. After a few days I decided to go for the car and paid £500 to reserve it.
That’s when the very poor comms started with this salesman.
No attempt made by him to contact me to agree a date for me to come down to inspect and test drive the car. I had to call him. He was on day off. Another salesman helped me and could not have done any more for me. I agreed a date with him and he said the original salesman would call me the next day. No call came. I had to call again. Checked with him that the agreed day was ok and he confirmed all good. The day to travel to Cheshire arrived and I had still not had any contact or comms from the salesman at Halliwell Jones. After a 5 hour train journey I arrived at showroom to be told the salesman was on a day off. He had not called to tell me that. Thankfully another chap helped us out and luckily all was good with the car.
When spending £23k on a car and travelling 250 miles I expect much better comms from this MINI dealership. One of the worst experiences I have had buying a car.
I had an official BMW recall in…
I had an official BMW recall in september, the recall was due to a cooler issue which could cause the car to set on fire, I contacted williams Stockport who gave me an appointment in March the following year, 7 months later I had forgotten about the recall, williams did not send a reminder text or anything, I then got a message on my info screen that informed me that the issue had progressed and there was a real concern about fire, I contacted williams stockport again, they said just bring it in and we will have a look at the car, I asked for an appointment time & how long I would be there, they couldn't tell me, I was passed around the phone switchboard until cut off. I then contacted Halliwell Jones at wilmslow, the experience was completely different, I was offered an appointment within 48 hours with courtesy car if required. Car was repaired 2 days later. Bravo Halliwell Jones!

I have a Mini John Cooper Works model…
I have a Mini John Cooper Works model in black Just 12 months old. I took it for its first service and was asked did I want it washing. I said yes and it was the worst decision I have ever made. The car was returned to me full of swirls and scratches, plus a chip on the edge of the drivers door. I returned the car and it was suggested that I had done these marks and even driven it through a car wash. I use the car twice a week and never ever do I leave it at the side of another car. I also wash the car myself using the correct cloths etc. I park at the top end of Tesco carpark at Handforth Dean where the car park is totally empty likewise if I use any carpark and I can honestly say that in twelve months I have never left it in a full carpark. The car came into Halliwell Jones Wilmslow immaculate and came back to me a total mess. It looked like it had been cleaned with a brillo pad. I could kick myself for letting them wash it. I had an email from the area manager asking me if I was satisfied with their 5 star treatment, I replied but needless to say I have had no reply. The chip on the edge of the door was touched up by them and the most visible scratches polished out, but the swirls of course remain. I would add that the staff were very nice, but of course the damage was already done
73 plate Mini Cooper
Amazing service again custom order picked up our shiny black Mini Cooper sport today. Dealt with joe again and as always can’t help enough.
Avoid at all costs
Avoid at all costs. As a mini owner for over 15 years now never have I ever felt made to feel so stupid. I booked my car in for an inspection. When I arrived I was made to feel I was being silly and making it all up as I don’t know my ‘own driving style’ - surprised it’s allowed to use the mini name. Appalling customer service.
Appalling customer service from both…
Appalling customer service from both Wilmslow and Warrington sites. Despite being a good customer for years they refuse to fault find over the weekend (which I have had previously as a member of the armed forces who works away Mon-Fri) and they told me that at least if I broke down I have breakdown cover.
Excellent customer service
Excellent customer service. Really efficient, friendly and personable. I've had bad experiences at other local Mini dealers

Excellent customer service. Really efficient, friendly and personable. I've had bad experiences at other local Mini dealers but Halliwell Jones in Wilmslow have been fantastic. From the initial order to delivery they have kept me informed every step of the way and we arranged a great part ex deal on my old vehicle.
Special thanks to Joe and the store manager (so sorry I can't remember his name!)
I'm delighted with my new mini.
