Beautiful colours, great result on 100% cotton items
NOTE: I don't know why the title is showing unhappy customer, I wrote something different.
I bought a really beautiful white shirt dress but unfortunately it was a bit see-through. I love the fit of it so much that I decided to give the Dylon /washing Machine Pod a go, and went for navy blue. It came out a pretty, vibrant navy blue and I was so pleased that I ordered another capsule in forest green to dye a stained cream top. The colours both came out so beautifully and I will definitely be using these again in future. I will note that the threads were synthetic so they have remained white, but I think the contrast stitching makes the items look unique and more expensive.
I did an experiment when I did the second dye and included a very beat-up hoodie that's a cotton blend. It has actually come out in a really interesting pattern (the hem which must be all cotton is solid and the rest is a washed out green), but shows the problem that some people seem to have reported. This product will only work with natural materials (listed on the packaging); it takes wonderfully to 100% cotton. The other issue might be overloading. I played it safe and did very small loads (1 or items).
It does use a lot of water and is a time-consuming process as you have to wash the clothing item first, then run with dye, then wash the clothes, then run the machine to rinse. I would suggest running machine cleaner after so that the empty wash serves a purpose.
There was zero mess (something I was concerned about) and the few traces of dye that were left on and under the seal I was able to easily wipe away with bleach (I did this after taking the clothes out and before running it empty).
If using the dye make sure:
1. Your item is 100% cotton, linen, or viscose
2. Bear in mind that threads are usually synthetic so they will remain the original colour
3. Set out enough time to do everything (you'll likely be running the machine for half a day)
4. Check the weight of the clothing (if the item is really special I would play it safe and just dye it alone)
5. Use bleach to clean the machine seal immediately after taking clothes out
6. Extra note: if you're dying a new item you still need to wash it first
Completely destroyed my gorgeous bedding
I'm devastated. I purchased Smoke Grey (pods). I dyed a John Lewis 400 thread count 100% cotton white king-size duvet cover. It weighed 1.2kg so used two pods emptied straight into the drum as per the instructions, having washed the fabric first. I followed the instructions to the letter and when I finally removed the duvet cover from the washing machine it was completely ruined. There are dark black spots and marks, patchy blue stains, purple patches, and completely uneven coverage. I looked on Trust Pilot and 84% of the reviews are 1 star, mentioning exactly the problems I've had. This product shouldn't be on sale, it has completely ruined my duvet cover which was gorgeous quality and only a couple of years old, I simply wanted to change the colour to suit a newly decorated room. Avoid this unless it's something of no value to you or you want your stuff to look like a decorator's dust sheet.
Very disappointed in this product and…
Very disappointed in this product and company! Paid £5 for the wash and dye intense black to dye some white curtains I followed the instructions, and my white curtains are now ruined! Came out a scruffy looking grey with a pink tinge! Turns out my curtains are 100% polyester (I didn’t know this as the label had faded with ironing) so yes I took a chance but my issue is, that there is no clear warning on the packaging that states this product will not only not work with polyester but can/will damage them, as the product has left my curtains a horrible colour that is permanent, and can’t be removed and when I contacted Dylon to complain they wouldn’t even offer me a refund on the £5 I spent on the dye! I now have to buy new curtains at £40 and I’m also out £5! There needs to be a clear warning on the packet to state that this product can damage items if they are polyester! It’s does not state this at all, just says product won’t work on polyester! I also found the helpline staff unsympathetic and argumentative and will not be using Dylon products ever again!
Destroyed washing machine
Followed the instructions, my washing machine is now ruined, no matter how many empty cycles I do, the door is stained, dye comes out of the drum, I've tried everything! NIGHTMARE!
Really disappointed with Dylon
Really disappointed with Dylon. Completely ruined two brand new tops which are now patchy all over. They look tie dyed. Never had this issue with Rit.

Behoorlijk giftig en gevaarlijk spul om thuis een ander kleurtje aan textiel te geven. Dat kleurtje komt er niet goed uit, niet egaal. Heeft behoorlijk veel werk en troep. Afrader voor milieu en jezelf.
absolute rubbish…
have used dylon before with no problems, decided to dye my white cotton duvet cover the sandy beige, wish I hadnt ,I followed the instructions to the letter and it came out with blue and pink spots all over it.Absolutely ruined.
Oh I wish I read the reviews
Oh I wish I read the reviews! Followed the instructions on the pack and after running the cycle with washing powder I was all excited to see my new bed clothes, I could have cried, the colour I’d chosen was sandy beige, what I ended up with a d dark brown. All tiny dots of pink, blue and green, my expensive M&S cotton duvet is ruined
Ruined our washing machine
Our washing machine is less than 2 years old. I dyed a pair of jeans black using the pod, followed the instructions on the packaging. I ended up with a batch of white with black sprinkles all over it and after 8 empty loads with boiling water, detergent, washing machine cleaner, bleach, pink stuff and soda I still have black residue coming up into the drum after every wash. I am clearly not the only one as there are a lot of people with the same experience. Dylon refusing to accept any responsibility.
Works as suggested on two black…
Works as suggested on two black Carhartt trousers, no blotchiness and has restored them to almost new condition.
Wish I had read these reviews before…
Wish I had read these reviews before purchasing as well! Absolute waste of money. Does NOT work at all, unless you want to buy many many pods and use them at once, then the results may be patchy as well. I am left with a ‘chewing gum grey’ jacket that should apparently be a vibrant passion pink! My jacket is ruined and I’m out of pocket for the product and all the electricity it takes to use the washing machine to follow the instructions. Won’t be buying this product ever again. Don’t waste your money like we all did!
UPDATE… having used my washing machine on empty long cycles at 40 degrees and long cycles at 60 degrees and also twice on warm rinse washes, I am still left with stained pink rubber inside and dye residue that rubs off from inside of machine with bleach wipes. I can’t risk anything pale. Shocking. Will never use again.
Currently running yet another hot long cycle to try to rid the machine of the dye!!! (Can’t imagine how much it’s cost me in electric when I was trying to save money by reviving an old light jacket).
Do not buy unless you want your clothes ruined
I completely agree with all the other 1 star reviews. I wished I could give 0! Never used the all in 1 pods before and never will again. Smoke grey. A joke. I followed the instructions to the letter. My 2 tops are covered in light grey speckles. My already light grey leggings and joggers (just for a freshen up) are no different what so ever. An expensive waste of time. Do not buy. From reading reviews about their terrible customer care, I'm not going to bother complaining either. Shameful.
I used the color “jeans blue” that…
I used the color “jeans blue” that completely destroyed my jeans that was intended to look more like “70’s jeans blue”. Dylon “jeans blue” is a kind of NAVY BLUE! So disappointed and RIP my beautiful jeans
Very dissapointing.I should have read these reviews on…
I should have read these reviews on trustpilot before wasting money on 2x expresso brown dye pods which I purchased and used on a cream coloured duvet cover & pillow covers.
They came out all patchy with black specks and stains all over. Items are completely ruined.
Safe your money!
Does not work at all
Does not work at all. Complete wast of £8.50.
Don't go near these dyes
Don't go near these dyes. I ruined several pieces of clothing I wanted to upcycle after following the instructions carefully. I let Dylon know and filled in the long form they sent me with pictures. 3 weeks in and I followed up but no response at all. There's a lack of communication about the limits of the dyes and customer service is terrible.
An absolute disaster
An absolute disaster. After using Dylon dye as instructed to overdye a handknitted wool jumper, the sleeves came out totally different shades. I complained to Dylon in an effort to get my money back and they put me through the effort of sending them pictures and filling out a form, only to then not bother at all getting back to me. Since the company was sold to Henkel, contemptuous customer service seems (if the other reviews are anything to go by) to have become the leading ethos at what was once a reliable British brand. I am very angry at having spent 16 Euros for a disastrous result.
I have been using Dylon machine dyes…
I have been using Dylon machine dyes for over 25 years. Since they changed it to the pod, (as opposed to emptying the dye straight into the washing machine drum) I have had nothing but very poor blotchy results. It just DOES NOT WORK. I've now got two ruined two pairs of trousers and two ruined pairs of shorts. I'm really disappointed as dyeing clothes is a good way to preserve clothing and give them a longer life. Just do not know what Dylon is doing but I won't be buying it any more. Sort it out Dylon!
dyed items covered in tiny speckles
Like so many others I have used both a hand dye and an all-in-1 pod and ended up with little speckles. I thought the hand dye speckles were my fault, so attempted a machine pod on the item and one other, but ended up with speckles on both garments.
The load was under 500g, the instructions followed carefully, and now I have dozens of speckles.
I have used Dylon machine and hand dyes for many years, with no problems, but this is the first time I tried an all-in-1 pod, and it will be the last.
Henkel are supposed to be a reputable business
Bought Dylon dye for the washing machine. Followed the instructions TO THE LETTER. Linen dress ended up with blotches all over it - literally ruined. Dylon asked for the most ludicrous amount of information before they could process my complaint, including the age, make, model etc. of my washing machine. I furnished them with this information on 15 August. I followed up on 6 September, 14 Sept and again just now as they have not responded to a single email other than the first one. HENKEL. A renowned, reputable German brand. Look into it; they make all kinds of things. I suggest you think very carefully before buying their products, as they have absolutely no concept of customer 'aftercare'.
