The internet was supposed to make transparency accessible. Platforms like Trustpilot promised to connect buyers with authentic opinions from real customers. Yet today, the reality looks very different: fake reviews can be bought as easily as ordering food delivery.
Typing “buy Trustpilot reviews” into a search engine is all it takes. Dozens of providers appear, offering custom-written feedback for a small fee. Some even guarantee “undetectable” reviews that blend in with genuine comments. For businesses looking for quick credibility, the temptation is obvious — and many give in.
This ease of access is precisely what makes the practice so dangerous. If reviews can be faked at the click of a button, how much of what we see on Trustpilot can truly be trusted? Consumers end up making financial decisions based on illusions carefully crafted by marketing teams and third-party sellers.
The normalization of this tactic is equally troubling. Many businesses see it as just another cost of doing business, like advertising. Instead of earning loyalty through quality, they manufacture trust through deception. And because so many companies participate, the boundary between authentic and fake has blurred.
The consequence is erosion of confidence. If customers can no longer believe what they read, platforms like Trustpilot lose their entire purpose. Worse, consumers are left vulnerable to scams and poor services disguised as reputable.
Denouncing this system is essential. People need to understand how easily reviews are manipulated, and regulators must recognize that fake reviews are not just dishonest — they are a form of fraud. Trust should never be bought, and every fake review sold is another step toward destroying consumer faith online.
