A shame zero stars isn't an option…

A shame zero stars isn't an option because this mickey mouse operation doesn't even deserve one. I've had private insurance for almost 20 years with various providers, large and small. Cowan is the absolute worst. Their website looks like an intranet website from the late 90s. They have no mobile app which makes submitting claims a chore. The layout is horrible. The serivce is awful. Their employmees are completely incapable of responding without copy/past from a script. They work with some partner called Express Scripts and it's extremely unclear why. But any time something goes wrong, Cowan blames them. They've not been paying my providers which means I'm forced to pay out of pocket. Reimbursement takes for ever. This is without a doubt the WORST insurance company ever. How they can even survive is beyond me but seeing as how they reject claims so easily, they're just pocketing monthly payments and never paying out. This company sucks.

Absolutely scam of an insurance

Unfortunately zero star isn't an option. This insurance literally rejects claims citing they require more documents. Even if you provide everything they still reject it. what more do they want? A death certificate? I wish I had an option to change it. But since I am an international student, I have to accept what the university offers. Due to this terrible insurance, I've stopped going to doctors. I simply prefer being in pain than dealing with Cowan claims.

Awful service

Awful service. They don’t pay. They give every possible excuse to not pay. We have been calling them for three years to get our claims paid and now they say it’s too late. We are escalating this to Consumer Protection and the Insurance Ombudsman. We spent so many hours on the phone with them and no one takes ownership. They pass the puck and no one calls back or fix the problem. They are a bunch of incompetent and lazy people.

the worse insurance EVER

the worse insurance EVER. I paid out of pocket for my medical exam because my doctor wasn’t accepting my insurance. I spoke to the insurance before doing it to make sure they would reimburse me. I paid, and was told by a different representative that i can’t get all my money back. Fast forward to 5 months after, i still haven’t received the percentage of the money i spent and every time i call there’s an excuse. IT HAS BEEN 5 months. I WON’T RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO WITH THIS INSURANCE! They are unprofessional and disorganized!!!!!

Poor support lack of people empathy they treat you like a number not a person

Take your money for years and denies your claims for STD. Cowan is my group insurance provider, and submitting claims is overall the worst experience through Cowan, compared to any other insurance group. Doctor recommended 3 months off for stress and High BP. Cowan gave me 30 days. I appealed and gathered all the paperwork they requested and still denied my claim. I had to follow up and ask for a status before they sent me a letter. DONT USE this company, Poor support lack of people empathy they treat you like a number not a person. very disappointed in the Cowan Group!!!

Cowan was asked to remove a home…

Cowan was asked to remove a home insurance policy with economical when my elderly grandmother went into a retirement home and sold her house.

POA who is my father in law not a very tech savvy person was asked to provide documents. Which he did VIA UPS Fax to email.

After 2 months the policy wasn't cancelled and contact was made to Cowan again to cancel. Cowan Requesting the same documents again which were provided via Fax at UPS for a 2nd time.

I myself sent the required documents via email as well giving a total of 3 sets of he same documents in 3 months.

Then in recent months we receive a letter that the policy will be cancelled for non payment. Which we were happy finally we don't have to worry about them "stealing" my 91 year old grandmother's money.

Then we get another saying it was cancelled for non payment as we went to the bank and put a stop payment since they didn't follow our written request.

After receiving the policy was cancelled they then again stole funds from the account a week later. Isn't this theft at this point? A criminal charge.

After 1 year of them taking money from my grandmother I had enough and contacted the ombudsperson who we then again sent the documents required to. Now a total of 4 sets of the same paperwork has made it to Cowan Insurance and Economical.

Ombudsperson said " this is a no brainer"

Within 24 hours I get an email from her notifying it's cancelled and that a refund will be provided.

So here is my question. Besides the Ombudsperson who enforces the law when it comes to this kind of stuff.

We are talking Elder abuse of some sort.
Theft over $500 for sure.
Unlawful use of power.
I can go on.

When is someone going to step in and hold these people accountable for stealing from Canadians.

I would never recommend Cowan insurance or Economical insurance to anyone. Not even my worst enemy.

Claims take weeks to be processed.

Cowan is my group insurance provider, and submitting claims is overall the worst experience through Cowan, compared to any other insurance group.
For one, it takes multiple weeks for a claim to be processed, and customer service takes just as long to get back to you in regards to your questions of if your claim was even received. When you don't have a way of seeing what claims are in process, and they take up to a month to go through, I am always left wondering what is happening with my submission!

Terrible Communication & Customer Service

I was at Cowan Insurance Group in Paris for 10 yrs. For the entirety of my time with them my premium was due every 6 months but paid over 3 months. No issues ever until fall 2019. I had added my fiancé to help with his PR application & when completed removed him. Because of this there was a bit of mix up with price & it was unclear how much I owed. I was not upset as I understood there were changes. I called to ask about my total. I was told it needed to be looked into & that I would receive a call back. I never received a call until a very rude agent called & demanded I immediately pay $700~. I explained that I was waiting to hear back about my amount owed as there were changes & I hadn't heard anything (which was why I had not paid). I explained that I had until Jan 12 to pay as this was my payment plan. This woman did not bother to apologize. Fast forward to spring 2020 when my policy is to be paid again. I pay as I normally would over the 3 months & don't hear a thing. My fiancé owns a small business & has his auto/business insurance with them. Over the course of his policy we had questions- often it would take 2+ weeks to get a response back. At one point the response was to "refer to policy." I had been asking for a break down of the business insurance/auto insurance/commission as I was doing our accounting. They would not give an answer- I had to pay an accountant to figure it out. August of 2020 I wrote an email to head office outlining my concerns of communication & lack of service. The first thing noted in the response was that a note had been put on my file making it clear to anyone that viewed it that I pay my premium over 3 months. My first payment was due by Oct. 12- I made a payment of $200 on Sept. 25 & then another payment of $200 on Oct 9. So $400 of my $861. In mid Oct. I received a letter stating that I was immediately to pay $600. I contacted Cowan to tell them there must be a mistake because I was already assured of my payment plan over 3 months, as well as I pointed out that I had paid $400 not $200. They responded to tell me that it was not a mistake & that I did in fact owe my entire premium as my account had been switched to a one pay. I emailed them back asking if for this premium I could stay on the 3 pay as I had already budgeted & then switch to one pay in April when my policy was due again. She told me she had absolutely no say over this & there was nothing she could do & to contact Dominion. I contacted them only to be told that it was entirely up to my agency & not the insurance company. Confused I contacted Cowan again relaying the information that Dominion told me. I explained that I wanted to continue on as normal for this payment plan & then switch to one pay in the future. Carol pointed out that I did not contact them until October 28 after my premium was due & my response to that was I had no reason to as I was not told that they had switched my account to one pay. She also stated she could only understand to an extent why I was upset, & refused to answer my question of what happened until after several emails. Eventually she told me that all the agency pays switched to one pay but could not explain why I was not informed, nor could she understand why I was upset about this. The most frustrating part is that while I was in communication with Carol they cancelled my insurance even though I had already paid almost half of it. I have all the documentation of Carol stating that I was on a 3 month payment plan.I spoke to a supervisor name Nancy, and she appeared to understand my frustration. She promised she would call me back that day. It is three weeks later & I have heard nothing from her. I have pulled my insurance after confirming I could be refunded. I have asked for a refund and they are refusing to immediately give it to me. I would like an immediate refund and to never deal with Cowan again. Due to the character length, I had to leave out several details.
