Beautiful zoo
Beautiful zoo, with well looked after enclosures and animals.
The zoo is woundfull
The zoo is woundfull
The staff are very helpful. However we visited the oakfiled restaurant on our last visit and again this year. All the staff were very helpful. But the menu was very poor the standard has slipped significantly since last year.
Saw mostly bums, as inmates hiding but still a good day
The ease of hiring a sturdy mobility scooter. A lot of animals not wanting to be sociable and with the racket from hordes of screaming school children, no wonder.
Loved the Orang-utans and the only Tiger to show itself, the Sumatran one. Thanks mate!
Quite easy to navigate around though most of drinks huts CLOSED on a warm day.
Only criticism is no smooth path for disability scooters/wheelchairs/etc over AWFUL bridges. I know they need to be hard wearing and non-slip for pedestrians, but I felt ill crossing them. One narrow strip of smoothness for us please when you refurb. Truly awful. Try it in a wheelchair/scooter you designers! PLEASE!
Thanks for a tiring but most enjoyable day (bar bridges).

It was awful always loved it when younger so was looking forward ti it well I was very disappointed we got to see about 5 animals in the whole zoo plenty of enclosures with nothing in it was all about British wildlife and flowers will not be going back blackpool zoo next time I think
First visit to the zoo
First visit to the zoo, a little disappointed in all honesty. Allot of the enclosure's you couldn't see the animals, the signage was very confusing in that some areas directed you to the exit instead of the entrance. Needs to be more areas with things to look at as at points you just didn't see anything and we went on the hottest day of the year and I would recommend free drinking fountains where you can fill up your bottle of water instead of paying the expense if buying a drink. Overall good visit but needs that something else to make it more exciting.

I visited the zoo today and we had a great time and the experience was amazing saw many animals and building works are on going for more areas in the park….
One thing however… the signage around the park was shocking the signs would say one thing and the animals would be in the complete opposite end of the park so we kind of had to work our own way round and ended up going back and forth on ourselves.
Other than that great experience!
Family day at zoo
We visited the zoo on Saturday 6th April.took 2 grandchildren.weng a few years ago so expected it to be better as it was the lockdown last time we visited. But no have the enclosures were empty they displayed what was ment to be in side.no Rinos.tigers .Queues for baby giraffe which were far to long ,queues for snow leopard around 20min wait .I noticed it was all about the food cafes restaurants .now replaced what was a animal enclosure. June's food court was a joke ,queues to get in .the system was so stupid 3 separate restaurant serving some off the same food ,given a ticket then have to queue up again,if we wanted different food had to queue up separately, a child was screaming and aloud to run behind a counter serving hot beverages staff didn't do anything they couldn't the mum had to go in get them ,night mare run establishment you need to sort it
Amazing day today with grandchildren…

Beautiful zoo
Lovely zoo! It’s quite expensive but everything is nowadays. The zoo has huge enclosures which look like the animals are well catered to. The areas are luscious and green and filled with ample decor. They have some fairly unusual species too such as ones I’ve never seen before! The boat ride is a lovely relaxing ride but I didn’t see any animals from it. The food is good too! Only downside is as someone who struggles walking far, I used to rely on the monorail but that has gone now, so be prepared to walk so much!
A really lush day at Chester zoo.
This zoo was so good! We arrived quite late as we didn’t realise the zoo shut at 16.30. We therefore didn’t get chance to see every animal in our approximately 2 hours there. However, the ones we did see have definitely convinced me to make the journey from Bristol to come again. I especially fell in love with the bats but we saw loads of different animals. Honestly, the lushest day and I’d love to go back soon.
Terrible experience
I visited the zoo 10 years ago and it was a great experience.
Returning last week was terrible.
The price for entry was massive and yet there was no monorail and the boats weren't running due to maintenence. There were a lot of empty enclosures and the signage around the park was very poor. They are building new areas, but aren't even looking after the areas they already have. To be charged full price and be limited on what was available is appalling. This was rated one of the best zoos in the world some years ago, but I would now rate it one of the worst in the UK and I have visited many. We will not be returning here.

Where to start. We paid at the kiosk on turning up to be told the prices for 2 adults was £71.This was queried as it was more than on the zoo website. The lady then said she could lower it to £64 as if she was doing us a favour.Found out later the £7 was for preservation of animals which wasn't stated on webpage.Next,we followed the crowds expecting to see swathes of animals but what a huge let down. Many of the enclosures were empty and the ones that did have animals well, they tried to look interested. The "river" through the first half looked awful as it seemed to be left to rot with dead reeds, dirty water, boats in need of attention etc.Overall, too expensive for the few animals on show. There are much better zoos elsewhere. There are more disappointing aspects to this zoo and I haven't the will to write them all down but we shall definitely not going back and shall recommend family and friends not to go to this zoo.
"Chester Zoo was an absolute delight
"Chester Zoo was an absolute delight! It's spacious, well-organized, and there's an incredible variety of animals to see. The elephant and giraffe enclosures were our family favorites. The zoo does a great job with conservation education, which was both informative and engaging for the kids. The boat ride around the islands was a relaxing break in the day. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. It’s a fantastic day out for families who love animals and nature."
Appalling online gift experience
Ordered 2x gift vouchers on 22nd Nov for 2x separate friend's children for Christmas. I stipulated on my order that they was 2x seperate presents . I got 2 gift vouchers and only one gift card and envelope, I emailed to say one was missing, they said they would send a new one straight out 1st class, 1 week passed and yet again not arrived . Emailed again and was reassured it would be sent out on Monday again first class, 4 days later the post has been and no suprise nothing! Spending over £100 for appalling service . Won't be wasting my time or money here again!
Needs more signs within zoo
On a bad weather day which of course the zoo cannot control we had an ok time but if not for the elephants I would not have gone.
Travelled from Leeds with four tweens. Signposts for road travel were great. Spacious free carpark and simple entry for pre booked tickets.
The map does not entirely match the actual site, must also say what should/could be a simple layout, really is not. Lack of signposts lack of people pointing you in the right direction you are going round in circles and even after 5 hours on a cold wet November day I think we missed parts of the zoo.
Good points, plenty of toilets and food shacks throughout.
Glad I have been, but will not visit again in a hurry.
Expensive
As a family we used to visit often, good zoo years back but sadly the prices are MUCH too expensive for the average family, what happend to the promo days you once had. such a shame as the more they keep raising entrance the less people will come :( I understand times have changed but Chester Zoo have got greedy!!!
Zoo keeper for the day
Zoo keeper for the day
This was an environmentally friendly birthday present for me and it was the best pressie ever!
I chose the Twilight section as I wanted to see lots of different smaller animals.
The Twilight team were so welcoming and enthusiastic to have me on board. I never felt like a spare part or a nuisance. Totally felt like one of them from feeding the animals to sharing breaks & the yummy lunch (which I expected to be a packed lunch) of chilli and rice with the delicious hot chocolate that was recommended to me!
I started in the bat 🦇 cave and was amazed when the keeper (Matt?) told me all about them and their habits. I had lots of questions; knowing nothing about bats which he was happy to answer. Then we prepared their food and put it in the runners for them to enjoy. Helping to clean up with the others. A new found respect was learned about these creatures.
There is a surprise in the bat cave at the end of the day which I loved!
What an experience but no spoilers 😜
Then off to feed sliced apple to the Capybara (Cappies) they were unusual and I learned about them too. One was very shy and wouldn’t come close but one did and it was lovely.
Then off to have tea break with the interns and keepers who were all chatting to me and I was hearing about the moving of some animals to another zoo and how they would do it. Really feeling included and part of the team.
Quick visit to the ant eaters who were having a lie in!
Next stop Brian & Gwen the Visayan warty pigs to feed and then on the foot bridge in the zoo to throw fresh broccoli for the other group of pigs.
Next stop making fresh fruit and veg kebabs for the Prevost squirrels.
Onto one of many favourite activities hand feeding the tree Kangaroos; Maudsby & Mummy,
Beautiful gentle creatures with so much personality. Could’ve stayed in their enclosure all day.
Then fabulous hour long hot lunch sat with the lovely interns hearing about their interests and telling me all they’d learned at the zoo so far. A welcome break. It’s non stop!
Onto the cloud rat enclosure to put food out and hear all about them.
Then over to the conservation part of the zoo to see where animals are kept and waiting to go into the display part of the zoo. Got to meet the fascinating mole-rats amongst many others. Mole rats are resistant to cancer and live a long time. Loved hearing all about them and the plans for the Africa section just being build and the animals that will be in there.
Quick visit to say hello to the elephants and then off to the Meerkat enclosure to meet them all and feed them locusts and mealworms. They were all around my feet and really quirky funny animals.
Quick walk past the rhinos back to the bat cave for my surprise and then ready for home.
Gosh it was 5pm already!
Walked to the entrance to leave with Matt and given a goody bag with cup, note book & pen, power bank, certificate and key ring all with “Keeper for the day” on which I use with pride.
This day was made all the more enjoyable when I heard that the money raised goes into a fund so that the hard working keepers at the zoo can go to see their animals in different parts of the world to learn and share what they know.
Chester Zoo - thank you!
Admissions team need training
Amazing magical day at the zoo, the ground staff were all helpful and knowledgeable. I took my two children to the zoo but unfortunately the BIRTHDAY GIRL and her sister had COVID. I thought it irresponsible to take 2 children with COVID to a place packed with other children. I explained my predicament to the gate staff and that i would like to change the date of the already purchased two children's tickets, The gate staff lady, was polite and courteous and assured me that this would be fine, and that upon exiting, I should seek out a staff member. I thought nothing more of it and we had a wonderful time at the zoo.
When we were leaving the zoo we sought out a staff member as we were advised, who couldn't immediately help us, but did say it should be fine and signposted us to Customer Experiences. I again explained the situation and was subsequently signposted to another department, which i think was Customer Services. By this point my two young children were getting tired and wanting to leave. I assured them that it wouldn't be long now. We made our way to Customer Services and it was CLOSED!! Why we were told to go somewhere that was closed im baffled by!!! I decided to try the retail shop and luckily found a store manager/assistant who when i explained my situation that the BIRTHDAY girl and her sister had COVID and that we weren't getting anywhere, he immediately understood and was friendly and helpful, he tried his best to find the Customer Services staff, but was unsuccessful, he assured me that it should all be fine and he would "Sort it" and he asked his colleague to take my details, which again was done in a friendly polite manner.
THE PROBLEM> I received a call from GUEST SERVICES a couple of days later from Sandra who i explained my situation of not wanting to take 2 children with COVID into the Zoo, and could she switch the dates as id been told by her staff it would be fine, she refused and told me to contact the 3rd party vendor, her customer service skills from the get go were very abrupt and curt she was unaccommodating and quite disagreeable. I explained as i thought perhaps she had not been fully informed that her staff at various points had assured me that i could change the dates, for the two children's tickets who had COVID, she became angered, dismissive and peeved by this. She then lectured me in a patronising manner that I had been given incorrect information by certain staff members and not all staff are briefed on all policy. I explained that it was unfair to penalise me for multiple staff members giving me incorrect information and that had i been given the correct information, I would have offered the tickets to other children, rather than wasting them, she seemed exasperated and riled by this. As a means to resolve the situation I suggested what i thought was a generous and very fair compromise if she was unwilling to change the dates for both children, would she change it for at least the Birthday girl, who let me just remind you has COVID, or offer a complimentary ticket as a gesture of goodwill for their misinformation and mistakes, she dismissed this idea and kept telling me to contact the 3rd party, she didn't offer any other suggestion or goodwill, in fact she became increasingly ill natured, unamenable and exasperated and basically told me that she was ending the call and hung up. I couldn't believe it.
I left Chester Zoo feeling we had a magical day out, however after the conversation with Sandra from The Admissions Team, this feeling has been erased and I'm left feeling saddened, dejected, distressed by my deplorable treatment. This lady Sandra needs training.
Misleading Promotion
The zoo itself is amazing!
However…they are running a promotion that says ‘if you book in September then you get a visit free before December 15th!
We tried this, however the website crashed, I rang and was told to pay at the gate, which we did.
But because of that and no fault of our own, the offer only applies to online bookings and we don’t get a free day. At over £100 for 3 adults and a baby, plus another £100 spent in the zoo, this seems incredibly unfair and on the basis we thought we would get to enjoy 2 days, not 1, a very expensive day out!
Health and safety failure
We visited Chester zoo today and had a fantastic time as usual. Apart that is from one experience. We stopped by June's cafe at lunch time to eat our picnic and to allow the children to play on the park area. Once we had eaten my daughter went in to get everyone an ice-cream. About 15 minutes later because it was so hot I went in with the children to get them a slush. While waiting in the queue I noticed that someone had dropped their ice cream in the center of the floor. When it was our turn, I ordered and then while I was paying the children went to leave to go back to the play area. It was on my mind to mention to the staff member about the dropped ice cream. Before I could, I heard a commotion behind me. Our 4 year old had slipped on the ice cream and fallen and his slush had split down the front of his tea shirt. He was very upset and while I was cleaning him up and comforting him I commented to the staff member that it should have been cleaned up. She offered no words of apology or any sympathy for what had happened. I am disgusted by the whole situation. It was a health and safety hazard that had not been dealt with. It was lucky it was a small child who wasn't badly hurt instead of an adult who could have been seriously hurt. When I got back to my daughter she told me that the ice cream had been there on the floor when she had gone in. So it had been there for at least 15-20 minutes. As his tea shirt was soaked we had to take it off him and he spent the rest of the day bear topped. How could that have been left like that for so long? A series breach of health and safety rules and the staff should face action for such a serious failure.
